I show you how to fully treat infestations of whiteflies, caterpillars and loopers on your kales, collards and greens. First is identification, followed by 4 steps of treatment. Remove, wash, spray and fertilize. You need to do this on a schedule to beat the life cycle of the insects. I also show you how to treat spider mites on your watermelon plants. Follow the same routine for cucumbers, beans and other garden plants.
Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

I feel you! I'm laughing at your reply right now but when it happens I'm on full alert. And it doesn't have to be an infestation. I'm not fighting any fungus invasion right now just Japanese Beatles are a problem. Not an infestation but I'm on high alert and making up a neem oil spray. I'm just reviewing for what I should be doing just kn case.🤯

I moved from the u.s. to Ecuador, and the bugs here are insane. I put in a raised bed garden and some spinach looking weeds sprang up and no bugs were eating them. So I pulled them up put them in a blender with water and sprayed my veg. plants with the liquid. The bugs must have thought that it was the weed. They left my plants alone.
@indigochild7936
@indigochild7936 4 жыл бұрын
I've noticed this as well, I also used to pull the weeds but I got lazy 1 yr and was behind and many were getting over 6". I noticed the bugs were eating certain weeds more than my plants so I left them. They still get alittle damage but not near as much as the weeds. I think I will try your trick as well.

Power washing my plants couple times a week keeps the frass (bug shit) off my rosemary, mint and basil. I love it when I get the plant big enough to be able to blast little nasty things away. I use the moth trap thing for my apple tree but I also randomly blast the tree with the hose sprayer almost every day after I see fruit form to keep the bugs off. I like washing stuff I plan to eat often. Bugs and slugs are relentless.

Another great video Gary. I mentioned to you in a previous video that cabbage loopers had did a job on my broccoli & cabbage leaves. I pulled the worst, but then used sevin dust on the others which has seemed to have solved the problem for now. Most plants seem to being doing well now luckily. My question is, most the leaves remaining on the plants I left still have many holes in them. Should I snip them off at this point & will the end veggie's still be good if or if I don't? Hope that makes sense. Any info would be welcome. Keep up the good work. Tommy

Thanks. I don't mind the dust for emergencies either. It is a great fix to get things under control. If the pests are gone and the leaves can still help the plant, leave them. Eggs hatch like every 5-7 days so keep vigilant to end the cycle. Please visit my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com. Thanks.

Have grown baby bok choy for 2 years now, no problems. In 3rd year, these dastardly worms suddenly this week (March 6) decimated my entire crop before spring has even formally arrived in Zone 8A. The seedlings were just 3" tall, barely established and just beginning to grow in the garden at the end of mild winter. There are 3 overwintered adult plants purposely going to seed in the same bed - moths never touched them. Time to break out the Neem Oil for first time ever. Glad you're here with answers! New tomato, pepper, many other seed varieties from you are growing very well under grow lights right now awaiting warm weather.

When I first started gardening I was really discouraged at the number of setbacks from pests and disease. I tried all the remedies you see posted on these gardening channels but eventually I tired of keeping up with the mixes and applications. About the same time I started interplanting everything so that each bed had flowers, herbs , veg etc but no more than two of any kind of plant. I still get infestations but since everything is interplanted the problems don't spread, and since I'm not treating them the predator insects have come to expect the infestations and show up just in time. Maybe I'm just lucky but I tend to think all the cocktails concoctions and potions may not really be necessary.

Yes. I don't like to spray too much and if I did it has to be natural. I find mother nature actually brings beneficial insects to balance it out. I grow many types of flowers, herbs, and plants just so that I get a diverse collection of insects. It is better than spraying. I also use beneficial nematodes spring and fall. If need be I will also release lacewings. You have to plant things that these insects like to eat and where they like to lay their eggs so you have a nice ecosystem going.

Gary, I love your show. I have a container garden. This is my second season. I started slow with a few plants. Tomatoes, chili peppers, some flowers and the curl kale. I also grew an avocado tree(ecuadorian), after trying many other avocado pits. It is a year old. I used the hydrogen peroxide method a couple of times for fungus and a serious spider mite issue on older pepper plants. Do you find the spray method on leaves dulls their waxy shine? I did it in the late evening hrs. Socal.

Hi Joyce. It is a bacteria that destroys the digestive systems of caterpillars. BT is short for Bacillus thuringiensis. While it is a killer for caterpillars, it is totally harmless to anything else. It is listed as organic. There are a variety of products that use it. Here is a link to one on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Bonide-Chemical-802-Bacillus-Thuricide/dp/B009ONSQ6O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1533048970&sr=8-2&keywords=bt

I found one of my Brussel sprouts covered in the 2nd caterpillar you showed. I killed them all and sprayed all my Brussels with organic neem. Now on the other side of my house I found a bunch on 2 of my 6 tomato plants. I repeated the steps for them. Now on my biggest strongest tomato plant in another location had a couple on it and I’ve been noticing every day more and more yellow and brown leaves. It’s starting to look like bad news. And the stems or vines look bumpy. This is my first garden but does that sound like blight to you? My pole bean leaves started turning rusty and yellow right after they started flowering and right after I found aphids. I sprayed them off with the hose for a few days until I got my neem oil in the mail. It killed the aphids but everyday more and more rusty leaves and I only get to pick a bean about every 5 days. They’ve been probably flowering for a month now. Is it a lost cause? The other day I noticed all these white roote like things growing out of what seemed the the inside of the bean vine. Tons of them on the last several inches of the vines the next day they seemed to be almost wilted, the white root like things. It was very bizarre looking. Also I’ve got several different pepper plants planted in a couple of pallets. They were all dark green and healthy now the leaves are light green on one of them the leaves are curling upward. I read online it could be any nmbr if things. I’m thinking maybe they nutrients. Which nmbrs on the fertilizer are best for pepper plants? Should I break away all the Brussels sprouts leaves to get rid of any hiding caterpillars because they are planted pretty close together. Thanks for all your videos and helpful advice. I wish I knew exactly what to do all the time like you do. Like I said this is my first garden and it’s been nothing but a battle with big destruction the whole time! Everything always looks so healthy until it starts producing then Bam- the bugs come and do their damage before I know what has happened and now what’s left of my squash and zucchini are getting powdery mildew. I cut away the leaves and spray with baking soda and it still spreads. I can’t win!!! I’m just about over it!!

Vine bumpy stems is normal as they are root nodes and come when its humid and lots of rain. Tomato lives can yellow and die of in heat as they try and manage hight temps. A good water soluble fertilizer, 1x can help right now.I would write down the dates of when you started noticing these things for planning next year. A balance water solublle for your peppers too. But if you have had heat, rain and humidity... just stay steady. You will still get production. Wish I could help more.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I'm kind of unsure what water soluble fertilizer looks like. All I ever see is granules. We have had a lot of rain recently. Like 2 or 3 days in a row and we always have high humidity. South East TN is always super hot and humid in the summer. The other tomato leaves on the other plants aren't turning yellow and brown really. But a lot of the green tomatoes on them have stayed green forever! You help more than you know trust me. Ive never seen anyone so knowledgeable about gardens before and I have learned so much from your videos. I will Google water soluble fert. Is there a certain strength (those 3 nmbrs) I should get? And also can I use the same strength for my pepper plants? Thanks so much Gary!

Typically any product that says 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water. You just pour it on the plant roots. Organic water soluble hover around 5-5-5. Chemical types are well above 10-10-10. Both work. If you get NPK well over 10's use 1/2 dose. Save yourself some money.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I have plenty of the granular 10 10 10 left over from when I first started my garden I also have some I think it is 3 5 2 granular. I read today 2!different sites for pepper care use 15 15 15 and anothe site said 15 30 15. I was like wow that’s a big difference so I thought I would wait to see what you said. I’ll look for some water soluble fertilizer. again thank you
