There are several alternative heating devices, including: kerosene and propane heaters and woodburning stoves. Larry shows you how we use our gas powered generator and how to create a small power supply for light electrical usage, using three simple items.

After living through a storm/power outage and scrambling for manuals, I decided to make a big three ring binder with dividers and clear plastic sleeves. All household manuals are in alphabetical order! What a blessing this has been! Kept on bookshelf so easy to grab! Love you both and always look for to your videos 💜

So much great, useful info ! In Dec. 2004, Ohio had a massive ice storm that shut down most of the state. We had never experienced anything like it....not even close!....in our entire lives. We had no power, no heat for a week. We survived by huddling in our small kitchen , using our gas stove for heat just during the day. All businesses were shut down. Nothing could operate. It was incredible.....& I hope to NEVER go thru an ice storm again.

In February 2010, I had a pipe burst in my attic while I was at work. It was piped through the attic to the refrigerator. Water was all over the place. Thank the Lord for good homeowner's insurance. I did not have to pay anything out of pocket.

I remember that! Not a fun time. My house was a freezer. Luckily we had family in town that we stayed with. They had heat. So did our McDonald's. Where I was working. We were soooo busy. Everyone wanting something hot to drink or eat.

Thank you SO MUCH for this information. We live in south Texas and were seriously caught off guard last February when the Texas power grid failed. I’ve never been so cold in my 72 years of life! It scared us and we’re preparing this year. So far we have 2 Jackery generators and a Mr. Buddy propane heater.

Growing up in Chicago and taking public transportation I used to put my feet in bread bags and then my boots to keep my feet warm & dry. Also wearing pantyhose under pants or jeans helps.

We live in the country, most of our neighbors have generator hooked up so power switch’s seamlessly from power company to generator. We are old school hubby has to go out shut off main power from our power company, starts our gas generator flips and switch. It does run the entire house including heat. That generator has saved us many many times, so thankful we have it. Love the channel❤️

hello:) my wood burning stove does heat my house almost everywhere..its e stove convec,,this stove burn the wood longeur.i like it plus it dry my close in e rack fast..if emergency i can boil water or cook on it or inside the stove...canada can be very bad on winter!..thanks for being there..for us !

I too started my prepper journey with trying to keep my critical sump pump opperating during a power outage many years ago. Started out with a 12v marine bilge pump with a cord modified to clip onto our car battery. Now have a true sinewave inverter and a small gas generator, while the latest iteration is untested under fire, they will serve us well. I love the inverters because the car running draws way less attention than a noisy generator and the car will idle for days on a full tank, providing limited power. In recent years it kept our two fridges and one freezer going during a 4 day power outage caused by a summer storm.

Firstly Hope you are looking lovely in this video your jkt looks lovely x 🇬🇧🏴❤️Here in the Wales in the Uk at the start of 2020 we had 3 months of flooding it was awful, People left homeless it was heartbreaking. I made the decision to Prep as best I could as you never know when a bad winter might hit..Better to be prepared than wish you had been x

The last ice storm my Mammaw dealt with had the electric off for 3 weeks. My uncle would take his gas generator over during the day and made sure she had a good fire going for the night.

I use one of the buddy heaters in my deer blind, they work great I HIGHLY recommend buying the filter and hose and using the same propane tank you would use for your grill. :)

I highly recommend Mr. Heater.we used one to heat our entire mobile home for 4 years until we got the money for a new furnace.

We have a whole house Generator, it will kick on when power goes out. WE Saved for this, because we don't want to get stuck like we did 3 years ago in a ice storm. You gotta stay warm, we have to have O2 for my Cowboy. We used feet warmers , hand warmers, blankets, ect... we used oil lamps , flash lights , solar lights, . We have the same all home Generac, but believe strongly in having back ups for back ups. For us (live in Wis.) we also have a gasoline powered generator to run outdoors and two Jackery power bank generators with solar panels. Lots of heating devices, alternative ways to cook food, etc.

Late to these two videos. What wonderful information. I have had the Mr. Buddy (the small one) for what seems forever. It got me through several winter storms in Asheville where we lost power for 2-4 days and it was going down to 8 degrees. It also got us through a 3 day storm in Atlanta (where I now live).

Set up a tent in the warmest room and have everyone sleep in one tent. Candle with certain flower pots Sleeping bags Cover all windows with blankets. Also cover the doors with blankets. Have a gas grill or other non electric method to cook. Remember if power is out, gas pumps, atm, businesses, and city water can all close /go down.

We are going to invest in one of those generators this year. We live in a rural area with a well and leach field. Without power we have no running water, much less heat or power for the fridge and freezer. I've actually gone down to the river we have frontage on and hauled buckets back up the hill to flush the toilet!

Hi folks in Illinois here rf. Being alone after my wifes passing and all that's going on the 2nd unit you said is very nice. If one doesnt use a upstairs area it could be slightly blocked off. We had a kerosene unit decades ago and a cat we had loved sleeping in front and we had to move him since he got to hot. See you in more posts. Bless you two

I know this is a older video but it sparked a memory I had when I was 11 or 12 years old. My sister and I shared a room in the basement and had a heater. One day our cat walked by it WITHOUT touching it and he caught on fire in those 2 seconds. He was ok because I acted fast enough but it could have been more devastating if no one had seen anything.

I bought a 8750 watt generator that's a few years old, and it's LOUD! Last thing you want is calling attention to yourself. You can make enclosures for them, but need ventilation and exhaust.

We've used kerosene since we were married. My parents purchased one back in 1980 and I really liked it so I have two of the same brand as theirs (Kerosun).

Great content and I agree with the other viewer - so many things we take for granted. As I live in a city the only power outage was in dark Soviet ages and only for minutes... but life can bring surprises, therefore I am watching.

I use the Big Buddy heater when I go winter camping. If you set it on low it can go for 6 hours on the small green propane tanks. If you run it on high it will only last 2-3 hours.

Just a thought but if you put blankets over all the windows and doors that will help keep the heat in also. Plus you can put extra blankets on your beds and sofa to help keep warm.

This brought back memories of the 1970s when we had 3 day working weeks in the UK. My father hooked a spotlight up to a car battery. I think you could have seen us from outer space 😂. It was a good idea as we could read when there were power cuts. Goodness knows what the neighbour’s thought. My friend made sure she was at our house every time there was a power cut which was quite often for a while. x

I agree with you on the Big Buddy. With the purchase of a hose, it will connect to the larger tank that I can use on my grill like you mentioned. It will run on low, with just one 1 lb cylinder or on high with 2. I also have a larger size Kerosene that I bought in 2000. I wanted to have 2 sources in case I couldn't get one or the other. I also have a spare wick on hand.

My dad in the 80's had a truck that ran on both gasoline & propane, it was very safe, but he had to run the gas to keep hoses from drying out on occasion.

I had a power outage years ago for a week and i wore almost all my clothes it was freezing i mean freezing lost food cooked quite a bit outside to not waste all of it yeah got through it but wouldnt want it to happen again oh no your tips sound great thanks

Keep your food in clean trash bags out in snow and ice in large rubber maid container with lid put block on top of your lid in case a dog comes around colder out there than in fridge sometimes.

We heat with wood so are prepared in that way. We can also cook on wood stove if needed. Always have 8 or more cords of wood on hand. We also have a Honda 3500 w generator with 10 gals of gas on hand.

Make sure the Mr. Heater has the fan on it. They have done away the fans on some of those heaters.

If you want heat for a single room like a small bathroom use vegetable shortening stick a candle in there and then trim the WIC so that it is pretty bare then stick one of those pottery based plants pot on it inbam you got an improvised decent heater that will last for 20 ish days now.

Larry you can put a plug through the wall so you don't have windows open. Think of RV power plugs that have male end on outside and female end inside.

Mr Heater makes a larger gas heater (30,000 btu) that can be mounted permanently or free standing. I have have one that's natural gas and it's located in the middle of my house and provides some serious heat during power outages or to supplement my furnace. It does have an electric fan but isn't needed to operate. I don't have to mess with kerosene it just sits there ready to go to work when needed. They also make a propane model and both have low oxygen shut-offs. You mentioned that you store your kerosene in your garage. Kerosene has a higher flash point than gasoline but it should still be stored in a shed away from the house. You might want to mention to only run your generator during daylight hours when there's a long term power outage. People steal generators and one running at night can be heard a mile away. I keep mine chained to my truck when it's running and at night it goes in the shed. I also run it on ethanol free gasoline (bought at co-op) and I use Stabil gas additive so my fuel doesn't go bad. Shelf life without this is 6 months and with it is 2 years. You mentioned the AGM battery charges at a lower voltage compared to an automotive flooded acid battery. They actually charge at a higher rate (14.6v) than a car battery (13.8v). Remember that one is none and two is one. Always have a backup plan for your backup plan.

We didn't have a furnace when I was a kid, we heated our entire house with a wood stove in the living room, we had one in the kitchen also, but I don't remember ever using it for heat, i don't know why my parents never used it

Not only do I have a whole house generator put in when I built the home but I also have portable generator, a gas fireplace that will heat the entire house (Rancher) and both solar and battery operated lights on standby

I use the wave 8 to heat up a 300 sqft. Cabin with a 30lb propane tank. It runs really good. I keep it on 24 hours every day on low. I get 9 days straight usage. It costs me $19.00 and change to get the tank filled. Its alot cheaper & better then a mr. Buddy. Just a guess if i use it on high i probably woud get 7 days. A green 1lbs bottle would cost $3.00 & change for 2 hours. I would be nuts to use a mr.buddy heater. I live in Maine USA

Hi from the uk. :) Always love watching your content I learn so much and am saving quite a bit so ty for that As for storms we had one at the back end of last year which put our power out for seven days (not normal) we got 0 help from anyone. Resorted to sleeping in a small tent in the living room with candles and a small heater. So since then we have been taking measures that we are better prepared. Its not in case its `when` it will happen again.

I found you through Kate • Kaden :) I have a Little Buddy, it works great and I use it inside a large tent for camping, but it’s nice to have it in the garage for an emergency. Timely video, my city and county (Whatcom in Washington) is in the midst of an emergency right now with a severe flood, unlike anything ever before. The freeway and roads in and out were all closed down last night. I’m not a prepper whatsoever, but it makes you think about being more prepared. It didn’t take very many hours to turn my city upside down! Thanks for the tips.

Good video. I have gas heat. Hopefully it would work if the power goes off.?? Fortunately it doesn't get as cold here in northern Georgia as it does where you live. I also have a Jackery solar generator and the solar panel to go with it.

If your furnace has a blower, you will need power to supply that.

The Jackery systems are great for light power draws. I have the separate pieces that do the same thing, but not as portable as the Jackery system.

Larry, I have to use oxygen and a cpap machine. I mostly got the Jackery so I mostly got the Jackery for that. I also have some solar light bulbs. I have several cans of fuel(can't remember the name) in case my gas kitchen stove doesn't work

Every time a hurricane comes near us we are without electricity for 7 days. That’s why we have back up generators and small window air conditioning. Lucky in Florida it don’t get that cold.

Wood burning stoves are bad for the lungs. Crack a window when using them. My uncle had an uncle who used one. He didn't smoke, but died from lung cancer. They were extreme off gridders. We bought those propane cylinders for our camp stove from Walmart. We used part of one. We bought old kerosene heaters for our house. They were useful except when they smoked. It looked like we had a fire in here. We had a couple of them. I believe in one was a Kero-sun. I just bought a recommended electric space heater from Amazon. It's supposed to heat a 1,000 foot space. It does if it's not all that cold.

We have two Kero-Sun heaters. I wish they still made them. We're extremely careful to make sure they are burning properly. Only once did I accidentally soot up the basement with one that had a bad wick.

Thank you for the explanation using the battery and inverter, you made it easy to understand. It you have solar generators, say 2, that can be charged with a wall outlet. Can you charge one generator with another solar generator?

I'm not sure what you mean by charging the generator. The generator we use runs on gas and supplies power when it goes out. I have used (and still have them) two solar panels to charge the AGM batteries.

I changed out my Sump Pump for a newer version which used HALF the electricity,... It will run from a car battery & inverter for an hour or so while I take care of other things.

If you want to use a gas generator to charge something like a cell phone or a tablet make sure you got a power regulator so you're not getting dirty power. Cell phones and tablets can get damaged by using dirty power

Good point. That's what I have the pure sine wave inverter for. You don't want to ruin electronics with modulated sine wave power.

For Part 2 can you share options for people that live in apartments? There's not much info out there other than the typical: stay with family or go to a shelter option. For me neither is an option since I don't have family that lives close by (if I'm dealing with icy roads...too dangerous), and shelters won't let me bring my cat. I don't have a fireplace, and would love to see more options out there. Thanks for all great tips on past videos!👍😁

Muze, for heat, the Mr. Heater would be perfect for you if your landlord allows it. Also, the back-up battery system like a Jackery, which I didn't cover, is another way to supply a small amount of power. I'll talk briefly about that on next Monday's.

If you have the option to use a wood burning stove, that would be a great way to avoid the rising prices. Otherwise, we just have to stock up what we can in fuel and ride it out.

my parents had a kerosene heater and when they ran it my muscles would ache. I don't know if it took the oxygen out of the air or what.

Not sure why that would happen, but I wouldn't recommend their use it's giving you bad reactions. My dad and mother had to stop using theirs when Mom was diagnosed with heart failure - oxygen issue there too.

I'm at beginning of video My concern is being in 2nd floor apt. No balcony. We can't have any propane or Kerane for lamps. Have good war,m clothes and bedding. And camping cooking and lights. Along with solar lights

Yes. You have to work with what you can. When we were in an apartment (also 2nd floor) we were able to use a kerosene heater but no gas generator.

You mentioned that you run your router so you can have internet, and at one point you mentioned that you use it to run your television. It should be noted that if your cable goes out it wont matter if you have ability to hook up your router or television. You need to have service provided to both up and running.
