Got it, thank you :). My table top has 190x90x6 cm, the original tree was around 500 years old. It has the gorgeous, rare (I believe) "bird eye" (almost snake-skin like) texture. I wonder if I couldn't just simply polish raw Bubinga without any laquer or oil to a higher gloss?

I have been explained by the Mirka technician that to level, the orbital sander is not ideal, and that a somewhat long rectangular sander is preferred, because of a better reference surface. Now the finer grits will be done with the orbital I use to polish with a fast speed once the polish is beginning to shine (it is not supposed to dry but to "break" or be "cut" then I oush the speed and use a light hand on the tool Clean microfibers for the cleaning, and when they have been used they are due for the washing machine On flat surfaces, the roto orbital type polishers are more in use today, they avoid holograms, the best ones have a fixed gear (the plate is fixed, not free) Best regards

Any tips for finishing raw Bubinga? I'm making a mirror frame. Trying to bring out the shine of the grain patterns. I'm kinda clueless with finishing other than lacquer.

May I ask how strong is this finish for daily use? (dinner table, etc). I have a similar tabletop, but used the semi-satin transparent Osmo oil on it. I'd like to bring it more to a "wet surface" look, which can't seem to get by polishing
@GatorFinishing

It would be a really good idea to fill the grain with a standard grain filler. Seal thoroughly, and then apply multiple coats of your favorite gloss lacquer. Once cured, follow the process outlined in this video of polishing out. Good luck!

Great work as usual Teri, If I can't spray anything but water based finishes do you have any recommendations? I've tried Target coatings but had some yellowing issues. then i tried General Finishes and I can't seem to get away from the plastic looking finish with both their poly and High Performance. I also don't trust this is a good enough finish which I can rely on for making furniture for future clients. I've recently ordered some finishes from Crystalac to try out and hopefully will get to use it in the next few weeks but I won't know for sure how I feel about it until I've used it on several different projects. If you were told to spray only WB finishes for furniture pieces, table tops, potentially piano finishes like you just did, which would you look at? Thanks and thanks for the video. Dave

Is this type of finish practical? I have a client with a 13 foot long slab of bubinga/rosewood and they don't like the standard gloss polyurethane. They are requesting piano finish, no visible grain or splits and cracks. Wondering if 1) I can salvage the 4 coats of oil gloss polyurethane by applying lacquer or something over top of it and 2) if this high gloss finish is durable to be used as an every day countertop.
@GatorFinishing
@GatorFinishing 10 жыл бұрын
The finish used in the video is a CAB acrylic lacquer. Not suitable for daily use and the high gloss would show every finger print and smudge. The Osmo oil that you are referring to would be far too soft to polish to a high gloss. A more durable finish for a dining table would be a catalyzed lacquer in a lower sheen.

BTW.. since my first comment, I have managed to get my hands on 2 insane waterfall bubinga slabs. Luckily both are surfaced BOTH sides. 1) 8/4 and 1) 5/4 7ft and 15ft respectively. :)

hello, why using oiy lube with abralon type ? is not it clogging the abrasive soon ? I use water , a little alcohol and some surface agent, as a sanding media, But generally this is polyester , very hard, need to be buffed with cotton wheels. Polyurethane laquer will go more easily it is way less hard indeed . (may be why you prefer oil or is it because you used a water based lacquer?) Best regards
@GatorFinishing
@GatorFinishing 7 жыл бұрын
You have to have some sort of lubrication between your surface and your sanding disc when starting the beginning stages of polishing out a surface. This is called wet sanding, and this beginning process is called flattening. Wet-sanding lubricates the surface being abraded, reducing scratches. The water mix or the 50/50 mix of mineral spirits and mineral oil ( which is what is used in the video) also carries away loose pieces of abrasive as well as finish particles and prevents the sandpaper from loading up. This will eventually clog your abrasive after much use, you should then replace immediately so you don’t risk gouging or putting deep scratches in your work. The reason why Terri chose this mix of mineral spirits and mineral oil 50/50, is because it’s her personal favorite and is also an ideal sanding media in the polishing process. Also, the finish on the bubinga board is not water based, and it wouldn’t matter if it was when using the 50/50 mix. The finish is a high gloss CAB acrylic lacquer.
@IsaacOLEG
@IsaacOLEG 7 жыл бұрын
Well I get your point, of course the 50 50 mix looks like a neat medium (unless some pores are yet open then the oil drip !! ) I think I will give a try on shellac eventually But I try to keep my abralon a long time, the water is also perfect to evacuate the sanding result, only the more the grain is thin the less fast I turn (this is important as the abrasive need to grab in the surface, and too much speed will build heat and clog the abralon soon.- less with oil indeed) Then with water/ soap, when finished I spray the abralon with a little "polish remover mix" (alcohol distillated water and soap, a drop of ammonia,) and I put all the disks under water, and presses them so the product that is in the foam is expelled. That way I think I keep the Abralon useful for a long time . I have a look with a small x60 magnifier or usb microscope, on my pre polished surface, it is éducative . 3000 grit is providing 80% of the shine, 4000 is 90% , with PE the gloss is obtained fast with mutton or cotton wheels (and the good wax or polishes, one without a chemical effect - so some car products are avoided. Best regards
@IsaacOLEG
@IsaacOLEG 7 жыл бұрын
I also learned an important point recently, even with Abralon, the orbital sander used is the one with medium orbite (5mm, or 3/16" sorry French ;) not the small 2.5mm one. why ? because with the sanding disks that have holes for extraction, the small orbite make small "commas)s" that are too short to push the dust to the holes, then you get swirls. It is amazing as I have zero swirls with the 5mm (MIrka 650) To rise the shine with Abralon, the pressure should be limited, as the speed (around 4000 that is with the lever almost close ) but the most important thing is to MOVE SLOWLY ; it really makes a difference I did make pics showing that. Here they are, sorry only a few comments in English, but I noticed the easier swirls with the 3/16" orbital sander) goo.gl/photos/73ZPnMD8NtBFwr3g8 To see if the speed is good, there is a trick ; the foam created by the water (may be the same with oil) should not be larger than 5mm (3/16") on the back of the disk (the half moon trail) it shows an advance speed +- clearly. (ALl the things I said come from specialists ) Mirka checked with personal experience) I LIKE the "Microstar abrasive, suited for young laquers or the ones that are not very hard. I could sand sheallack without "pif tails" with that abrasive (cleaning the disk and the surface often of course, the disk with an aggressive type microfiber, as the ones to wash dishes, or the special brush to clean the cloths, the surface of course with microfiber, dry, changing the cloth often enough Best regards

You're the reason I tell people that women make for better wood workers than men. Being a man myself I find that I get impatient and am not as thorough as you are in this video. Could you tell me where you get that 3000 and 4000 grit paper? I haven't found anything above 2000 grit here in Colorado.

The finish with the wax looks just as glossy as the video started. Why need to sand from 1000 to 4000 instead of just starting with the swirl removal? Is it only to completely flatten the coating? I imagine even with spraying it it still has very fine texture maybe?

Nice finish, but you wasted a lot of compound. I would have used a quarter of that amount! Try it. Squirt a thin line of compound 6 inches long and catch that up on the edge of your buffing wheel. Then proceed in the manner you did. Polish a square foot with that. It works. And you will have less to clean up. For the rest you are up with the best!
