All of my 50+ chickens I hatched and brooded, but because one of my original girls was broody and I happened to be hatching some olive eggers I decided to see if she would accept them….and it worked! She now is a proud mama of 10 babies and doing great!!

My Easter egged (Bandit) has gone broody every spring. Fist time we let her hatch one chick and sadly our dog killed it. She was calling and looking everywhere for her BA hand it broke my heart. She and I bonded at that point. Last year when she went broody, I slipped 6 day old chicks under her in broad daylight to make sure she got to be a mom. She happily raised them all. She's sitting on eggs from the flock at this moment. She is a good attentive mom.

I got 2 Deathlayer hatchlings for my broody Buff Orp. I crept into the coop at night and slipped one chick under her wing. Goldie grunted in surprise, then felt the chick, and she drew it close and began to purr. When I lifted her other wing, she gave a surprised squeak, then purred in pure rapture. I backed off to let her raise them, but at 5 weeks I noticed I terrified them. But they were tractable at night on the roost, so I handfed them and massaged their spines. I got to be fast friends with my gorgeous Deathlayers that way.

After ome had hatched out babies and I took them from her (her 1st clutch of chick didn't make it, idk what happend) but after taking her babies, she went broody 2 weeks later! She hatched out more babies! Now I have another hen that's gone broody and she sits in the one spot everyone lays there eggs! So now everytime i go to get eggs I'll see her sitting and ill go "hey! What do u think your doing" lol I love it. She keeps keep the eggs clean too. This hen used to hate me but she let's me pet on her now

Timely question: will a broody hen incubate a regular bird egg? 🤔 (I ended up with a cardinal egg after hedge trimming)
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't risk it. I would worry she may harm it when it hatches because it is altricial (hatches with eyes closed and needs to be fed and cared for in the nest) and very far from how baby chicks are. Do you have an incubator?

So I just had my Chickens have chicks! They are sooooo cute little fuzz balls!! I got the mamas as chicks so I can just go in and see the babies with little to no fuss from the mamas. I had three hens go Brody in the same week so the babies have all three of the hens as mamas and no hen or roo even think about massing with those babies. So far I got 6 babies and three more eggs but I think one egg is dead but I want the hen who sits to stay until the two come in the world so when that happens I will remove that one. Hopefully more hens then roos come out of those babies! 🤞

Hi , from NSW Australia , I got my bantam to adopt 3 newly hatched chicks just days after her clutch had hatched . I kept them warm through the night with a warm water bottle and set my alarm for 5am just before dawn then took the chicks in and placed them under her while she was still sleeping . This way , I could hear and see if there were going to be any problems . By sunrise mumma is awake and has no idea she has 3 new chicks and continues on caring for all of them . Worked fantastic , I was awake to keep watch and listen if there was to be any problems . Just meant an extra early rise for me but it was 100% successful and so easy .

Hi Dahlia! (I have a cat named Dahlia; we call her Dahli 😊). I am awaiting the call to pick up my 1 -2 day old chicks to give my broody hen. I bought a rabbit hutch with a small run for them to stay as they get acclimated. My plan is to keep the hutch inside the run or the coop. Can you tell me when I should move my broody from her nest in the coop to the hutch? The reason I bought the hutch is because there is too far a jump from the coop nesting box to the coop floor, which makes me nervous for the babies. Also wondering how you manage feeding and watering if you don’t use a second space for the Mama and her babies. Just looking for a little more logistical information about the process and set up when attempting this! I am new to the process, but I am very eager to make it happen. Thank you for all your wonderful videos!

Question- I’m down to 3 hens( Americana and Astralorps) and a HUGE Americana rooster. He is pretty gentle but does charge me at times. I need to get more chicks but none are broody. Wondering if the rooster will attack young hens or try to mate too soon if I buy baby chicks and integrate them when it’s time? To answer about getting more chicks: I have 4 hens, 1 rooster all 1 year old. In March and April I got a total of 6 more, they went into a pen as soon as we got over 55 at night= 6 weeks. They got out and all are well. The trouble comes more from the older hens in my case. But they all get along

Question for you. I am not concerned about the other hens causing issues with the chicks . I only have a flock of three and they are all quite nice and friendly. My hen has been sitting on some fertilized eggs for a couple weeks now. It occurred to me, though, our coop is about 4 feet off the ground with a ramp going up to it. Is this a danger for the chicks? I do have the option of setting up a rabbit hutch in the chicken run, but I am unsure of moving my broody hen this far into it. If your advice is to move her, will this possibly break her brood?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia Жыл бұрын
They will probably be okay going up and down the ramp. If you decide to move her, it's possible she may abandon her nest but you will have the best chance of success if you move her at night and move some of the bedding with her. :-)

Love your videos and for the last year that I have been raising my first 7 hen flock, I have used your experience to be the best that I can be at playing the rooster 🐓 and keeper. I have recently had my first "brooder" and after a few weeks of trying to get her out of brood, I took away her two ceramic eggs (she was in alone in "jail" at the time in the chick raising coop) and while she was out for a daily walk, I swithched her eggs with two Easter Egger day olds. Immediately, she took to them and is raising them now perfectly. I am nervous, and I am scared. It is cold out, she is keeping them warm, but she is making it very hard for me to ensure they are eating, driinking and secure. I have so many questions!!!
