I like how you backed your horse before sending him out in a circle. Backing is probably one of the easiest and yet most neglected things that you can do to help your horse respect you. Anytime I work with a horse, I will make them back - through doors, gates, poles, whatever. "The better your horse goes backwards and sideways, the better he will do everything else."

When I got my mare, said to be 10 but definitely younger as she has grown 🤣She did not back up on the ground or saddled, in fact the first time I asked her to back she ran through me breaking the stall door jumping through it and catching my arm. Now she backs on command after only two months, backing is still a work in progress and she has her good and bad moments but we never stop until she completes the task.. she apparently lounged very well but again not the case.. she would refuse so I bought a whip and chased after her with it to get her to listen, part of it as just stubbornness and turning in to you to make it seem as you asked her to stop, but she didn't know how to lounge the other way. she now goes on voice command, either direction. w/t/l both ways. When we visited her the first time she did NOT like the lead to be held to close to her space and she wanted to walk 6 feet ahead of me, now she walks 3 feet behind me, stops her feet with mine and respects where I hold the lead. I first got her used to me holding where I wanted and then used the snap down the lead technique to get her to stay back. and when I stopped, if she didn't with me she was backing up at least three steps. She also came very buddy sour, I lounge her hard and then make her walk by her buddy, then tie her to a tree to be patient and feed them separate and she's so much better. So much more haha

Amazing video! I’m going to try this out today. I just got a new horse about 2 months ago and he is starting to show his true colors he bites, runs off when I try to lunge him, and has terrible ground manners. Im really trying to work with him on respecting me and my commands without being to aggressive to the point he fears me. I’ve been riding for 12 years and he is the smartest horse i’ve seen he’s about 7 years old and he try’s to trick you into thinking he can’t do something when he’s perfectly capable of doing so😂. He’s a tricky one but hopefully your tips will help! Thank you.

Tnxs for the tips will try it! One thing how do you get a lazy horse to like be more actif and move his feet more?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Lazy horses can be to do with their breeding or temperament. You could try being more energetic with your body language and encouraging him to be more active and quicker in that way. Or you could supplement feeds that are high on sugars like molasses filled pellets and that will sometimes give a lazy horse more energy.

So I have been working with a rescue Tennessee walking horse for almost 6 months now. I have done a ton of ground work exercises consistently. When I lung him, he stops when I tell him to and goes when I tell him to. But there is one problem, he will not stop in the saddle. I tried one rein stop, different bits, and more training but he still doesn’t respond to my cues when I tell him to whoa. This is a real problem because he has taken off with me several times at a full gallop, it’s a really frightening experience. Is there something specific I can do to train him to listen?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Hi! Ok I gotcha. Does he back up well? You said you tried the one rein stop… have you tried it at the walk or trot? You should be able to one rein stop at the walk even with a difficult horse. Practice it slowly from a walk get it good! I also have a video on how to get your horse to stop so watch that and actually do that with your horse! Hope you see results soon! 😊

@@HorsePerfect He backs up just to my voice. But when I try one rein stop, he holds his neck straight and doesn’t respond, he used to but now it has gotten really bad, even at a trot. I will practice doing it at a walk, I think it has to do with him being barn sour. I just don’t get it, he took off again with me today and when I fell off he turned around and came back. Could it be that he doesn’t understand what I am asking him to do? And really thanks for the advice I will watch that video about it. My trainers all say he is untrainable but I don’t think that’s true.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Yea I think you’re right. I don’t think he’s untrainable it’s just that he figured out he is stronger than you. It might be time to try a hackamore which is much softer on him. Sometimes hackamores because they are even softer than bits actually reset his resistance. I would definitely try that 💁🏼‍♂️
@distinctive_equestrians

@@HorsePerfect I will look into that. Thanks for helping me out, I feel like it is gonna be a lot better than a bit. It’s good to hear from some other trainers that can help.

Hi, great advise. Can I ask how long we should spend on ground work? I have a horse share. I ride once a week. My routine is basically doing yard work (mucking out, grooming, tacking) and then just riding. My focus has been the riding only. Please advise what a horse day should be like... How much ground work, round one, lunging compared to actual horseback riding.
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 жыл бұрын
A good plan is to do 1/4 of the time you spend with your horse on groundwork. If you spend 1 hour that means 15 minutes 👌🏼

Yes and no... If you're having a hard time with your pony with lunging then try to build his respect for you doing other things and then try again later.

@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect 2 жыл бұрын
Hi There, good question! Sounds like your horse really doesn't respect you! Start using a training stick and make sure he respects your space by asking him to back up from further away from him. Be careful to stay out of biting distance the whole time. If you have to tap him hard to keep him away you can do that. Hope this helps!

What about a horse that will go in a circle but pulls outwards?
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
My best friend has your last name! Haha cool! Ok well if they pull outwards the best and easiest solution is to use a 4 knot halter. www.knottygirlz.com on this website you can get 10% off with code HorsePerfect10 😊 If you already have a halter like this and your horse still pulls please let me know!

Yea this is great but do you still keep asking him or keeping the pressure on him if he strikes out, shakes his head/tail, rear, buck or charge at you?? Having problems when asking him to lunge he gets frustrated how do you help him and fix this… please help 😅
@HorsePerfect
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Yes and no… most horses will give up being aggressive if you get very black and white with them. If you really make clear what you want and stay at a safe distance away from them with a 4 foot stick and a 6 foot string you can create a lot of pressure. If the horse charges you it’s because you’ve been rewarding his aggressive behaviour simply by giving up when he gets aggressive. I know how hard it is and I’m not saying you did something wrong I just want you to know why he does that. Maybe I can make a video on this at some point I’ll try to find an aggressive horse! For now yes apply more pressure so much that he doesn’t have a choice. Aggressive body language and be clear. If he moves away and does what you want then awesome! If he tries to charge you then it might be time to get professional help! All the best!
