To release a cover song to stores like Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, and more you need to make sure that you have a mechanical license and that you pay mechanical royalties. There are multiple ways to do this, but my favorite options are to 1. Use EasySongLicensing.com (use the first link in my description) or 2. Hello, thank you for making this video. It was very helpful and to the point. What if I have a friend make a cover of song to include in a student film? Is each view on KZfaq considered a digital download. That would be quite a hefty payment? Also, does Distrokid charge $12/year plus take out any royalties you have to pay, or does the $12/year pay the royalties for you? Thank you very much for your help!

Thank you very much Landon for a down to earth explanation on distrokids music license etc but what about the DJ's who remix songs together and put the songs for sale on there page's or perform their mixes live on stage at a music performance. I'm sure that some type of license is definitely needed as well I cound imagine?

Ok, maybe a silly question, but are there cover song licenses that are restricted or held back from the public? Or can a song owner say no or prevent people from licensing and releasing someone else's cover I guess is more what I'm trying to ask? My fear is in trying to get a license for a specific song and being told 'no.' But I'm new to the business and licensing side of things so maybe that's not how it works.

Thanks for this video. Question? I remade a popular song from the 80's, so people will recognize it. I played it all in Reason at a slower tempo. It has a different name and I am singing completely different words, just in the same melody and cadence. Do I still need the mechanical license?

In Canada, we need to contact owner - publisher to get permission ourselves before getting a mechanical licence.

I previously followed all of the steps you discussed in this video to have my song released two days ago, paid the required fee. Distrokid to date has not released it. Can’t find a customer help telephone number nor email to know why there’s a delay in securing the cover song license. VERY DISAPPOINTED

@@633sweetheart Yes, thanks for asking. Distrokid did eventually respond and distributed my song to various platforms. Since then I’ve released another song through distro kid.

Honestly cover songs are a pain in the butt, they are only to help gain exposure but not to make any money from. It costs way more money in licensing and you don't get much back in streams and if someone does download 25+ copies, you're only getting a few cents after the songwriters,publishers and distributor get their money. Original songs is were its at.

So if I only distribute to Spotify and Apple Music, and NOT itunes, I dont need a mechanical licence? Also, $12 a year feels pretty expensive right? Especially if you have several covers a year. So wouldnt it be better to do it through ditto or amuse?

you can distribute to only streaming platforms for free, it doesn't require a mechanical license.

More precisely, as I understood it based on this video and others: In the case of solely distributing a cover on streaming services, you only pay once for the mechanical license (say, $12 one-time on Easy Song Licensing) and the streaming platforms take care of splitting off the royalties for the rightsholders from any streams. So, it's a win-win running on autopilot after the initial purchase. 👍 - Eero

Update to the situation overall: Nowadays you don't even need the mechanical license for covers released solely on streaming services; the MLC handles that for you.
