Software engineering jobs at these top tech companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft are extremely competitive because they all have high starting salaries. A recent college graduate software engineer can make upwards of $200K USD per year!
The fastest way to become a software developer is to get internships while in college. Then perform well at your internships. Hopefully, you'll get a return full-time offer for the company you interned at. If that's not an option for you don't worry!
So the software engineering interview process goes like this:
1. Coding Challenge Interview
After you submit your resume/cv, you'll enter the initial screening process at Google. If you pass, then you'll be asked to complete a series of coding questions online. You'll be judged on your technical skills.
2. Phone Interview
If you pass the coding challenge, then you'll move onto the phone interview. During this stage, you'll be asked to answer a series of coding questions while talking with your interviewer. You'll be typing your code into a shared text editor, and you'll have to explain your thought process as you program. This stage will judge your communication and coding skills.
3. On-Site Interviews
The last stage is the most phone! Big companies such as Google will fly you out to their headquarters for 2 days, FOR FREE! You'll have time to go sightseeing for one day, and the other day, you'll do a full day of interviews. These interviews include behavioral and technical interview questions. The best way to pass these is to do mock interviews with your friends or recruiters.
If you managed to pass all of that, then CONGRATULATIONS! You should now have a job offer at Google. The next step is to NEGOTIATE your salary.
Software engineering salary can vary wildly depending on your negotiations. You need to outperform in your interview stage and you need competing job offers to get a high salary.
If you want to become a software developer you should learn the most popular programming languages: Java, Javascript, or C++.

I'm in software engineering but I'm a POS and only ever worked for an old traditional company making just under 100k a year with no equity on the east coast. I never really tried getting into one of the big techs, despite many of my ex-classmates successfully doing so. I figured I wasn't smart enough and with enough self-confidence to go for it. Now I quit because the daily grind of putting out app after app with no time to create something truly unique and cool, just wasn't worth the relatively low pay. I'm just not cut to be under someone else's thumb I guess. I'm starting my own thing now, we'll see how it goes.

More than just confidence. Because just pure “belief” is not going to cut it. You need the type of confidence that comes from competence - practicing interview questions, reaching out for recommendations, doing internships, etc. Or else your “confidence” is just delusion.

@@hafu Maybe it is. But why talk about Google or becoming an SWE at Google that makes 200k in particular? I see so many of these videos and I take them for what they're for. Just cliche'd and click-bait titles and talking about getting into FANG. If you're genuine about what you're saying, then prove it by making a video and encouraging a philosophy of doing challenging work that satisfies you, even if it be at a small company with a little less salary; rather than hopping on a hypetrain of getting into a FANG company just like all the other youtubers. I say this with no offense but with a grain of salt

If you''re looking for a house in the Peninsula area, say, middle class communities like Mountain View and even Sunnyvale, you're paying $1.5m for a 1,000 sf house, big enough for maybe one bedroom and one bath. Good luck to all those who aspire to work in the Bay.

1. don’t have a learning/mental disability and be reliatively smart 2. have rich parents and attend a top university to major in comp science 3. study and grind lleetcode like crazy 4. have a 1% chance of making it into these companies

This gotta be a joke, 1. I have dyslexia and ADHD who grew up in a single-parent household and was homeless twice yet I'm a software engineer, learning something doesn't make you smart, going through college as a computer science major doesn't take a genius, it's definitely difficult but anyone can do it if they truly want to... you put time into studying and you'll make it, 2. you don't need to go to any top university, for instance... I live in California with the Uc Berkeleys, and UC San Diego's. Guess which UC has the highest job placement after college... none. It's San Jose State University, more people from a "67% acceptance rate state school" get swe jobs as new grads than new grads from any UC or Stanford. 3. you have to study and grind for anything if you want to make it, and its definitely not 1%, not even faang is 1% but stay with the excuses and you'll end up nowhere
