Just to comment on the thriving part, having an over the top personality when teaching ESL is a must! I've been teaching online for almost a year now and whew I've learnt a lot. I've taught other subjects in SA and its very much different from teaching ESl. Some days its challenging because maybe you are generally just having a bad day. But you have to fake it till you make it. So what's Sba is saying about building rapport, breaking the ice etc.. is exactly what is required of you. So, to everyone who wants to teach English abroad, I'd suggest you start with the online job while you are preparing your stuff. It will help boost your confidence and also give you the necessary skills to teach in an environment like that.

Really want to come to China this year. The salary situation just tricky. I've been offered 12k before tax at a public school and wondering if that is the going rate for new teachers. Can one even survive with that amount in a city like Hangzhou? They offer 2,5k housing allowance, is that enough for a decent apartment? I was hoping for 15k minimum but ...ku rough.
