Wow… Excellent is all I can say. As an engineer this makes total sense. The whole process needs calibration. From capture through screen visualization and finally printing. All instruments have inherent biases and standards help set a uniform procedure. Of course one can argue that the standard itself is not true since everyone sees colors differently. I would hope the pallet used in this calibration is based on a Gaussian curve that covers 90% of what the human eye interprets, and I am sure it does. The one thing I will say is this process is designed to apply a sort of unbiased correction when you want to stay true to the color standard. If you want to use some creativity, then these procedure is not necessarily applicable. However, it’s always nice to begin the creative process with the standard colors as visualized in the scene.

Very nicely and simplistic video on camera calibration. I never heard about that. One of my portrait photography friends, always recommended to calibrate monitors using colour checkers. That’s also important. The way how you have given the simple tip to use of colour checker passport, that cleared many questions about exact colour capturing conditions. The most helpful video. Many many thanks. 🙏🏻

My friend, as I gave you a "thumbs up" and "subscribed", your explanation of the use of a colour checker card for calibration was the clearest and easiest to understand that I have either watched or read about. If I may, I would like to ask you a question about the "colour space" setting in the camera as I feel that I have a small understanding. My understanding is that the camera colour space setting only affects .jpg images. If you shoot in RAW, then the colour space setting is applied in your post processing software. So encouraging the viewer to set the colour space in the camera is only when you shoot .jpg images. Please correct me if I am mistaken as I love all of your videos.

Personally would love to hear your thoughts on "Seeing" the photograph before even taking it. By that i mean, how do you approach each shoot? How do you come up with the concept? Lighting? What inspires you and how do you see that inspiration through to a photograph etc.....a bit different from what you do here i guess...however i believe it will be very valuable to a lot of people i am sure. Thank you for what you do and please do more of this. Thanooj

Thank you for mentioning the free software download to actually allow the profiles to be made. I'll bet I watched five or six videos on using these color checkers, and not one mentioned how they came to have this software/plug-in. Thanks for you tutorial on color management. I did myself al this before many times, creating profiles under different lighting situations, overall it works, but not very well for skin tones. I have learn that some manufactures code the files in such a way that is not posible to restore the original colors using this type of adjustments. Finally I have to manually adjust the colors relying on my eye to produce more pleasant skin tones, but I will not call them accurate. 🙂

Color space is irrelevant for RAW shooting. It's actually recommended to use sRGB (if you shoot for web) because that'll be the basis for the in-camera histogram calculations, in case you want to check during the spring session.

I'm pretty sure Adobe RGB can ruin your colors in post in case you don't know how to handle it properly. So either don't forget to change it to sRGB when developing your RAW file or don't bother. If you don't print your photos professionally, it wouldn't make a difference. Other than that, it was very helpful. Thank you!
