Ever wonder how to get around Paris? How to get around Paris by metro, taxis, bikes, scooters, the RER, buses, and even your own two feet. Paris in my Pocket's guide to how to get around Paris. If you want to know how to use the metro, how to use the velib system in Paris, or does Uber work in Paris, this is the video for you.

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off KZfaq? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the tips! A couple more. Absolutely put your picture on your pass. We got stopped at a checkpoint and paid 35€ per person(5). Also, my daughter had her feet on a seat on the RER when they came through to check tickets and we had to pay 50€. Learn from our mistakes.

This dudes videos are the most helpful thing if you are planning a trip to Paris. I really enjoyed watching the one about scams and he showed these guys playing a game around the Eifel Tower and betting on this ball under some cups. I saw this in Paris and thought "oh I saw this on Jay Swanson", then got to watch the police go after them, it was like an episode of cops right in front of me.

Jay was really polite but I'll just come out and say it -- don't use the scooters when you're here unless you really know what you're getting into. I rarely go a few days without seeing near-misses between tourists on those things and automobiles. Just walk or take the train. It's better for you and you'll survive long enough to tell everybody else about your great trip to Paris!

I agree. My daughter lives in Florida and flew off of one when she hit a hole in the pavement. She couldn't see it because there was construction going on, and a spotlight was aimed directly at a spot that happened to blind her momentarily. She cracked her clavicle and was out of work for a few weeks (unpaid). She couldn't even dress herself. The people at the E.R. in Fort Lauderdale told her that she was lucky; told her people are thrown into traffic and pass away.

I used to take the metro everywhere when I was in Paris. Recently though I've been almost exclusively using the electric Dott scooters. Only costs 6 euros or so for 10 rides within 24 hours. Great way to get around albeit maybe not the safest.

Definitely get a Navigo - they are so easy to use and the tickets work out really cheap. Good point about being walking fit. I had a huge blister on my left foot last week after walking round the city. The blister was well worth it though!

Just returned from Paris yesterday. All set to buy the navigio easy pass and found they still sell the 10 ticket bundle. Apparently they are not phasing them out until September. We found the 10 tickets enough as we like to walk and wander around. Plus you can share them unlike the navigo pass. This was best value for us. Love how efficient the metro system is. We found your videos really helpful and thanks to your tip we made sure we paid to go to the top of the Parthenon. Definitely a highlight.

For the Lime/Uber scooters & bikes, if your coming to visit for a few days, like velib, you can get unlimited ride passes for a set period of time. I believe they are 24hr and 3 day passes. I got the 3 day pass for 28.99 EUR, and I saved SO much money. I only wish I knew that before I started using the system. So if you're planning on doing a lot of biking in Paris (which I also highly recommend), and you don't want to have to deal with Velib, I suggest getting the 3 day pass with Lime.

Bonjour Jay! A LOT of RER B issues from CDG starting because of renovations, and until 2025. I was trying to help one of our university students navigate all the zigs and zags with this for her upcoming trip, and whew....this subject could definitely use a video. (BTW, while I don't usually take it, I ended up recommending - the Roissy bus to the metro - for her because of her particular date which will be a Sunday with extra restrictions, on top of everything else). Great video on all the rest but heads up that this topic could use some chat and help a lot of people. Un gros merci!

When me and my mom visited France a few weeks ago, we had so, SO much good food everywhere we went Yet after we got home, Mom said she lost 3 pounds from before we left And I can't say I lost any weight, but I did notice that the stairs up to my apartment seemed quite a bit easier to climb than before That's the measure of just how much walking you're gonna do when you're in France!

Biking is the best! Since the city is so small you can pretty much get anywhere in less than 30 👏 Also, Dott is the best price for the scooters ! They have a 2 ride for 3 EUR pass which is cheaper than 2 metro/bus rides 🙌

YES YES YES for the people who stop at the top of the escalator ! We bought our Navigo one week at CDG but didn't know we needed a passport sized photo. Got the pass which we loved could have done without the photo drama after an 8 hour flight. About busses, they are great if you want to see some of Paris without walking! We planned our trip to include 'bus rests'. Make sure your Google Maps includes bus routes to your destinations. Yes you will walk a lot!!

@@jamesbinns8528 It actually went pretty well. It was so hot, we didn't want to be stuck on buses. And with it being around Bastille Day, they were really crowded so we used Ubers and taxis. A couple of the Uber drivers were rude because there were four of us (even though the app says for four people). The taxi drivers were all good. I was strategic about restrooms and it wasn't too bad. Planning ahead made things easier.

Another great video with some super ideas. Unlike you, my wife and I enjoyed the buses. Except for the RER B from CDG, and a couple of trips on the Metro, we either walked or took the bus. As tourists who weren't in a hurry, buses allowed us to people watch and see the sites. We will return in June, and will likely walk and/or bus everywhere. Au revoir.

Ugh - pickpockets! No joke! I had been SO careful but there were two seconds on Friday when I put my phone in my pocket at the Etienne Marcel metro entrance and a tall black dude dressed in black slammed into me at the turnstile while I was putting in my ticket. He stole my phone and I ran after him, but had already gone through the turnstile so he had a time/space advantage. Never put anything valuable where they can see it. And of anyone sees that dude, please yell at him for me!

Apparently my Motorola phone can't do the Velib or SNCF app as it doesn't have the tap to pay software. We are only going to be in Paris for 28 hours and doing very short trips around arr 1-4 and to the border of the one East of 3, whatever number that is. Can I just pay euros on buses? Get paper tickets in the metro? Not worried about saving a few cents for just a day. And since Velib is out, does Lime/Uber require the same technology or is it just a code of some sort my sad phone can handle?

Hey, yes navigo works on the bus. Zone access depends on what you purchase with a card. A navigo card itself doesn't determine the zones - YOU determined the zones when you purchase it. All of central Paris is zone one, but the big woods on either side will be zone 2, and for Versailles and CDG you'll want up to zone 5. Just depends on your trip/plans.

Great video, like always. If you live there, is the annual Navigo a good or pricey option?

It really depends on which part of Paris you live in. I live in Zone 4 on the south side, and I actually don't go into Zone 1 that often, so I don't have any Navigo pass really. It depends on which zones you live in and which zones you go to on a daily. Like with the Easy Navigo, and also Navigo Liberté , it's the best for Zone 1, for me I can only use the Navigo Easy on buses in my area, it doesn't work on the RER outside of Zone 1. The mayor and president of Ile-de-France are seriously considering making Navigo Liberté available for all zones and I hope it happens soon. The difference between Easy and Liberté is that with Easy you load your tickets in advance, to it's perfect for tourists that will be staying in Zone 1, Liberté is better for locals and is a credit system when you pay once a month for all the trips you did that month.

Awesome video, but I have two questions (hopefully simple ones). If you have just flown in to CDG, can you buy a weekly Navigo ticket, and use it to get into Paris Centre, and then use it for the week? How much approx does a weekly 5 zone ticket cost?

You should be able to yes, and you can find pricing info here www.ratp.fr/en/titres-et-tarifs/navigo-monthly-and-weekly-travel-passes
