As a result, socially conscious people may choose to actively support small businesses owned by black people when they can in an effort to subvert the systemic disenfranchisement that they face.

Here’s another tip: if you have a friend or a group of friends that love to read, read with them! That’s why I’m trying to get back into reading cuz one day when hanging out with my friend I was like hey I feel like reading some books and said do you wanna read and have some tea. I picked a book that peaked my interest and I actually got quite invested in it and the environment was more suitable because my friend was also reading, it made me feel more inclined to read. It’s similar to how I could mostly only study at school because I was surrounded by others who were also studying and because it’s an environment intended for learning

I’ve been trying to re-read my favourites to get back into a routine of reading, but it’s such a struggle - It’s like I feel guilty for ‘wasting time’ reading when I could be doing other more productive things. My brain prefers audiobooks so that I can be multitasking like cleaning/doing laundry whilst listening to a book. But I also know that reading a physical book is so much more calming for me, and calmness is much needed atm - I think I need to force myself to turn off my phone/iPad in the evening so I’m not tempted (says me watching KZfaq videos in bed at 10pm 🤦🏼‍♀️)

I GASPED SO FUCKING LOUD WHEN I READ UR COMMENT THANK YOU BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE!!! THE GUILT HAS LITERALLY BEEN THE BIGGEST THING STOPPING ME FROM ENJOYING BOOKS AGAIN 😭😭😭 and I rant about it all the time (guiltily even!) to my friends I tried SOOOOO MANY TIMES to reread my favorites from when I was a kid/teen, the ones ive already read many times and have previously succeeded in getting me back into books every time I was away from reading for too long each time! But it’s been years now and I’m still struggling 😭 The fact I’m also reading and watching this at 10 pm tucked in bed with my kindle and 2 books by my bedside is hilarious 🤣🤣 alas audiobooks don’t work for me because I’m ADHD af and my attention won’t grasp at a single word unless I see them to anchor me down and it really frustrates me because I want audiobooks to work for me so bad 🥺🥺 Also reading actual words do also bring me a calmness and peacefulness I can’t ever get from anywhere else in life, things I desperately need, and things that give me happiness like nothing else ever can 🥹🥹 I miss reading so much it actually physically hurts 😭 Anyways, Your comment gave me so much validation and happiness and comfort I just wanna thank you for sharing 😭

Never finished a single book my teachers forced me to read. But I'm just so done at wasting time just scrolling through my phone and the thought of getting invested in a story already makes me so happy but whenever I tried reading again I again got bored and never got back to the book no matter how much others love it, hopefuly I still have a chance TvT

I guess I'll re read Rick Riordan, since that's what got me obsessed with reading in the first place. I feel like my imagination has become more foggy over the years, and as an artist that sucks. So I think reading can help me a lot in that. And also I love being into stories in general, but my attention has plummeted down like crazy to the point I barely can watch a whole movie without looking to my phone. I'm avid podcast listener for my rides home but recently I started listening to audiobooks. I've listened to 2 audiobooks already and I'm going to listen more to audiobooks as well as physically reading a book. It's more easier for me to listen on my ride home bc i'm in the car at least 2 hours every day and i can also listen to it while cooking dinner or doing chores. I used to think "it didn't count" but now i'm like it's like listening to books on tape and reminds me of childhood. Plus i don't have a lot of time to commit to sit down and read. I'm also thinking of throwing a book in my purse maybe reading on my lunch break once in a while. Never thought of #12 i need to do this!!!

2 things that helped me read are 1) read books where they made a movie on them. In 2019, I listened to a great youtuber who narrated The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-up to book 4-and it's thanks to loving the movie with Martin Freeman. It got me interested and hyped to listen to the books. And 2) instrumenral music helps because it sets the tone. I'm currently reading a book trilogy where I'm using the Resident Evil safe themes where I see it best fits a particular section.

I read Around the World in 80 Days when I was 11, and I read it 5 more times before I turned 12, so yeah I read books a lot and I miss it SO much. I have a much pettier reason than you to quit though. I stopped because my parents divorced so I was too busy and stressed, and then my mom rented a house and it's dim and messy, and I have a bunk bed so there's no light. I quit reading because I have nowhere to read 😭 And I'm so mad at myself that I stopped for so long, because now I feel like I might never get back into reading and that was always my favorite thing to do. I struggle to read due to my severe depression and busy lifestyle, but I love reading. Its just the fact I have to read a lot of books in school so I don’t have energy for my own, and a lot of times I have to read 6 hours straight the day before its due because I didn’t wanna read the kind of books my school gives me. I’m trying to finish a 90+ and still ongoing book series, it has taken 2 years to get through 2 and a half book. I’m probably rereading the first 3 and buying the next this year. Atleast the book I’m currently reading in school is a high fantasy (got to choose myself) which is a genre I actually like instead of all the realistic novels. But theres 14 hours left on it and its due tomorrow so..

What little love I had left for reading after gaming entered my life in middle school was completely eradicated once high school crushed my love for reading and turned it into an opportunity to use sparknotes. But in college I took the philosophy route and ended up restoring my childhood love of books. My parents doubted the practical utility of studying philosophy, but it has totally saved my literacy, creativity, and love for learning, and I doubt that many other college students could relate. So maybe I'm out of a job now immediately after gradation, but when I find one someday, I'll be mentally equipped to handle anything thrown at me. So take that, practicality argument.

I really enjoyed this video! I especially like your sentiment about reading whatever suits you. While I like plenty of classics, I don't like the idea of "a classic canon of literature." It's a little smug and elitist. At one time those "classics" were contemporary, and (in many cases) pop fiction of their age. I'd rather simply judge each story on its own terms regardless of when it was written or what genre it fits into. Ultimately it's all the same result of the human creative impulse, and to have a hierarchy of literature is antithetical to the beauty of that creative impulse we all share.

I'm trying to get back into reading at the moment, but I'm finding it kind of hard and it's not because I'm reading books that I don't like, but at the end of each day I become absolutely exhausted because we have lots of work and my bus journey takes quite a long time and I find it very hard to concentrate. I'm an A-Level student currently, and I do enjoy reading, but I feel like I need try again and allow myself gradually tk get back into it.

I remember a time in my life where my mum used to come into my room in the middle of the night, beeing angry, telling me to stop reading and go to sleep blabla. I read until I fell asleep and the tiredness was worth it. Idk what happend tho.

I certainly did more writing than reading last year and I can tell my writing improves by reading more. This is a great video! (I can already feel the struggle of forcing myself into reading by preferring the stories through visual media.)

there it is. theres the phone myth. before the internet, people channel surfed, before that, people browsed the library, before that, people would talk to each other and watch the birds at the same time. theres also people synonimizing "phone" with "tiktok" when phones can do so much more. in fact, my phone helped get me into reading, along with way more important struggles its helped me through. its why im frustrated every time people say phones are the root of all distraction and evil

@@HannahLeeKidder It gave me a reason to want to read and there were other reasons to attend them. Such as showing off about all kinds of reading related topics. The son of the guy who wrote the Danny Fox series attended one, and I could show off that I knew more about the series than he did (he couldn't even remember correctly which cub was based on him).

The Rebecca movie screwed up the ending but Rebecca's room had an excellent design. The Hitchcock film was better but even that was kinda short. The book was a slow burn and the adaptions were all too quick, especially in the second half.

Unrelated, but: I wish I lived in such countries! 5-6 hours in college is a lot? Here students literally start studying 12-14 hours daily in around 10th grade to qualify the national exams. These exams are written by more than a million students and only couple thousand spots 😭 So competitive!
