This has helped me since 2010, I used to take a pic on my I Mac at the shop then convert it. lol It helped me so much. Now, I buy only secondary primary colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and magenta.) I buy blue, green, red, violet in DARK only in 4oz sizes. Cheaper and keeps your color theory skillz tight by mixing everything.

I have always been drawn to black & gray (monochromatic) until recently when I saw some Neo-Traditional tattoos that blew me away. I am hoping to expand to using colors and this video has certainly explained so much. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it is much appreciated! 🙏 Poppy

I just think what shades/colors color pencil packages have = light blue, dark blue, light green, dark green etc. And go with them pretty much :D Always light and dark version of same color. It gives me enough ink cups for color tattoo.

Quick tips around color; this might not work fully depending on how the phone is finding that value. ( Some software won't factor in the vibrancy of the color and will just drop the saturation of everything to 0 which can end up feeling like you have a palette that's missing something and isn't a 100% representation of what that would look like in black & white. ) Some color has inherent value and is perceived as brighter/ darker even if the value is the exact same by our eyes. So when you put these two colors next to each other they have a relationship and are perceived differently because they are next to each other. ( ex. Blue looks much darker than yellow even if the value/ brightness on a phone shows they are the exact same. You might have seen optical illusions that take advantage of this. ) So you can also use this to your advantage as an artist! An easy way to do this is something I like to do called hue-shifting; where you shift the hue of the darkest tone slightly colder and darker on the color spectrum and move your lightest tone slightly warmer and lighter. ( You can do this inversely as well if you want a cold light, like in my example below. ) If you want to add another layer, light tends to desaturate colors, so your most vivid, saturated colors should be in your shadows; and then desaturate as you get closer to the light. Here's an example, let's say I'm going for a complementary palette of Blue and Orange; I'm going to make the shadow Orange and maybe like a blue flame for the light source? I would shift the darkest orange into more of a blood orange, and the brightest blue to more of a teal, but keep mid-tones for both of these colors that aren't shifted. And graduate through the four colors Red-Orange -> Orange -> Blue -> ( Blue-Green/ Teal ). This is a simple explanation of some stuff in color theory, color was scary at first, but once you learn how to work with it; I've seen people do wicked stuff~ Nice video, and thank you for being out here educating us on tattooing!

Nice tip! I'll put it to the test next time I drop some ink. I like bold contrasts, so I choose my ink based on that premise. I guess that means I think in color? I recently considered UV ink (for myself) to go over older tattoos in order to bring another dimension to them... and then I watched a video by James Withee, on the subject of UV ink. To say that I'm now hesitant would be an understatement. What's your take on UV ink? Such as longevity and health, and which ink would be best suited to meet those requirements. Your answer will likely be "none" but I've gotta ask. Apparently some artists mix a UV powder in their ink to obtain the effect. Any knowledge on what that powder is? Also, biologists (?) use UV encapsulated in PPMI (?) plastic to mark fish for tracking/counting purposes... so I hear. The thought of putting plastics inside the body, on top of the micro plastics already riddled within our bodies just doesn't seem healthy. Just thought I'd mention another form of UV ink.
