I love the way these guys talk about Guthrie. It show the tremendous respect that even an elite player such as Tom Quayle has for him... I mean he really is that good. He might be the complete guitarist and maybe he truely is the greatest of all time... there is simply no other guitar player that is so versatile and consistend and I dont think that there is a level above him. It's already a matter of taste and I'm not a friend of saying "this guy is better than this guy..." he is not even my favourite guitarist but Guthrie Govan is simply not from this earth. He's as good as it gets. I got nothing but respect for musicians like them.

Quayle's style is so on point. FOr those who haven't seen him do a product demo for the 2018 Ibanez AZ guitar, go watch that... I wasn't going to buy that guitar, but after his video I wwas sold on the tones, it really goes to show you the guy playing the product in the demo can totally make someone 180 their opinion on an instrument.

It's funny that he says what he does about ear training as a way to navigate a playing situation when you don't actually know what's going on . I went to music school with a guy who was ... SUPER dedicated to learning the guitar , the fretboard , the scales , chords everything. I ran into him a few years later after we left school and we were talking about " tuning down " and he couldn't even fathom how anyone could play a guitar that way. Even the idea of explaining " you still play everything the same way , it's all just a half-step lower" . His response was " I wouldn't know where anything was ." By contrast , the little I know of playing , I can apply to any tuning or key because I basically go about it by finding the root notes ( ? , I"m not even sure that's what they are but ... there are certain notes I hear that fall within certain " scale shapes" that automatically tell me where I'm at ) and I just know what to do.

In an earlier video, you brought up the topic about knowing “everything” not being as valuable as developing a certain style/being a specialist. I kind of disagreed at first, but this interview made a good point of showing the value of having a more direct approach to the style a person develops. Great interview!

Great video, great information. The question nicely answered! But, as you were talking of Guthrie Govan~how come he and all classical musicians can do it all?? What are they doing differently. I mean where do the find the time to practice all of the available techniques to perfection, or what routines are they using? Because the have to be able to play everything from several centuries on the call of the conductor! So, the conclusion would be~ Guthrie ( he’s awesome) is just anomaly within the guitar world, isn’t he? May be?

Its strange because when I started playing I learnd ass backwards. I never had a teacher but I learnd down picking and power coards. I took the idea of the power cord that its the same all the way down the fret board and applied the knowledge on all other techniques . when you break it down if you can learn the fingering of the scales and what the root notes sound like you can play with anyone

Question at about 5.30 - "What's your specific points of things that separate you from us" A: "Focus" - Interviewer looking all over the place whilst Tom is looking directly at him. Seems about right...

The world's shortest guitar video would probably be: How to get better at guitar - Practice. :-) I wonder if any KZfaqr would have the nerve to do it.
