I agree with this whole heartedly. I am married, have kids and work full time so I can't get to the judo dojo or the bjj academy multiple times a week (sometimes I struggle for once a week) this is why I drill at home either footwork drills, banded uchi komi, or work with a grappling dummy. If I don't get the time I read judo or bjj books anything to get my knowledge base up. I have even previously worked my way through the judo curriculum from white to black just to drill. I have never taped myself at the dojo or academy but, what I do during my rest time I'll watch two others roll or randori and I pick a player and break their game down and analyse it.

I love your collaborations with Chadi. Keep pumping out the posts, I love them. It’s actually referred to the Rule of 10,000. 10,000 kicks, 10,000 baseball swings, 10,000 golf swings etc etc etc.

Experts develop answers to competition problems and train more effectively, not harder and longer. The study done by Erickson and misinterpreted by Gladwell, was for what it takes to reach world class status in activities with highly developed techniques like violin. For classical violin type activities, there are no "new" techniques, no huge shortcuts, just endless practice for years. For most other activities, like Judo and BJJ, this rule does not apply at all, because most activities have plenty of faster and more effective ways to reach expert level in a few years. Just look at American BJJ champs as proof of this. Leglocks and Wrestling have completely changed the game. Experts train smarter, not longer and harder.

Bjj competition scène is young. Judo is like wrestling its way more spread and older (in term of competitivity). There is no shortcuts in judo. You want to be world champion ? Start at 10, and be intense because there is an army of japanese, french or korean Kids training. Be at you pick at 20 because at 30 you retire from the international circuit. You have à 10 year windows to win beacause after that the next génération comes up

It's probably better then to do both, hard and smart work because you're never really sure what domain your activity falls into

Maybe the elite guy was just a better athlete. I mean, if we are being real. There are plenty of people who give 10,000 hrs of hard training, have the best coaches, have a crew of dedicated to their film study... even use PEDs... and still never hit that elite status. Do you know how you make a world class judoka? Take a world class athlete and teach them judo.

Makes sense, hown would you define a world class athlete?

@@OGFITNESS define.... an athlete that participates in a competitive sport against others at a national and international level. Here is the tricky part about those who are world class athletes. These individuals typically have a nervous system that operates at a much more rapid rate. It has little to almost nothing to do with their muscle structure. But much more to do with how well their nervous system can communicate with those muscles. I've done private lessons in martial arts with an Olympic sprinter, a few NFL linemen, NHL player, NBA and MLB players. All of them learned how to perform techniques at an incredible rate. Their ability to control their body and learn new movements, to react to stimulus rapidly and make educated responses in minimal time was absolutely amazing. If they spent a few years learning judo and started to compete they'd be placing in national tournaments with ease. These people just have "it" and "it" can cross over to a number of other sports.

Where did Chadi get the idea that Kano thought real Judo was best described by female Judokas? When Kano was alive he'd have declared all sport Judo Gedan.
