Wow. I really need your help. I may need to fly to Arizona this summer . I have both Phonak and an Oticon hearing aids. I prefer the Oticon but I own both and they are top of the line. I purchase them in 2021 . I first purchased the Phonaks but couldn’t get them to work properly with my hearing loss. I have a lot of hearing issues. If you can’t help then nobody can.

Dr. Cliff, given the trade-offs between different vents, domes or earmolds which you describe, if one purchases Kirkland Signature 10.0 HAs and therefore ActiVents are not an option even though the HAs are essentially Phonak Paradise equivalents, which of the following alternatives do you think would give the best result for someone with mild low-frequency hearing loss and moderate to severe high-frequency hearing loss, particularly when streaming music or tv, in addition to normal day to day conversational situations: 1) open dome or open vent but wearing noise blocking earmuffs/safety headset when listening to music (to minimize escape of low frequencies) 2) open dome or open vent but removing HAs and using Apple iPod Pros (perhaps adapted with the Apple software for specific hearing loss) when listening to music 3) other suggestion you may have? Thanks for your very informative and helpful videos.

Thanks so much: i was expecting this video as a Graal !!! IT is reaaly interesting to se the flatness of the frequency response curve of closed dome and the fact they go low in frequency. I would have a remark: in your curve the bandwith is good in low freq (closed dome) but not so in high freq for wich it cuts at about 7KHz that it is a bit far from hifi audio. Do you know if performance increase can be expected for that in the future or if there is a technological blocking point? A gaun thank you so much for all the informations you provide: before you there was more or less .... nothing. Bye!

Very pleased to come across this video and also another, slightly different one, on the same subject. Timing was excellent as I have had Phonak P90 hearing aids for only 3 weeks and was coming round to the conclusion that they weren't for me, as I wasn't getting the hearing improvement I had expected. Since watching these videos and the explanation Dr Cliff gives for switching to the ActiveVent receivers, I'm a lot more hopeful that this will be the solution I'm needing to continue using my hearing aids. I've had open vents on mine since I got the aids and will now talk to me audiologist with a view to switching over to ActiveVents. My only concern is that I have reverse slope hearing loss in one ear (uncommon, I'm told) and I wonder if this would have any adverse effect on these receivers. Can any one comment? Thanks. Great, informative, video.

How did you get the second sound sample to sound better on my ReSound Ones since I don’t have closed domes? I do increase the bass and lower the treble sometimes while streaming music and it helps a bit. Actually what sounds the best is putting Apple Earbuds in my ears along with my hearing aids probably because they have the in ear mics.

If anyone reading this has a Samsung phone AND can only hear in 1 ear... (ie you have a bicross possibly) set your phone to Mono. Lots of audio you are streaming is split into stereo. If you only hear in 1 ear, you're only streaming half the music or audio. Go to Settings> Accesibility > Hearing Enhancements > Then turn on "Mono Audio" for connected audio. Not promising anything but it helped me quite a bit.

I just had a hearing test I have mild to moderate hearing loss and in my sixties. I really want the best of both worlds a good earbud and hearing aid. I was given Oticon Mini R’s to trial. As a hearing aid they work well but the music streaming is lackluster. In addition I small ears with big hands putting the wires in everyday is an ordeal. Therefore this a Active Vent with the molded titanium insert is the way I think I will proceed. Thanks for the video. Have you reviewed Signia Active X?

The active vent system was a huge bust for me. The popping sound when the unit was switched modes was behind annoying, even when I adjusted notifications to the minimum. The point of the the product is good audio…clear sound interrupted by explosive crackles does not meet that goal. Worse, the active vent is not durable. I take great care of my hearing aids, clean them, change the wax guards, keep my ears clean - but despite this, the active vents failed three times (twice in the left, once on the right.) They just stopped working, and I could only hear very faint sound. My audiologist and I both concluded this was wax ingression, and it required replacement. And of course, each replacement means a trip to the audiologist, ordering new product, etc. At least they were under warranty. Conclusion? This is a fatally flawed product that only does what it says it will do under the most optimal conditions. And in this case, “optimal” does not equal the real world.

Hi Dr cliff I was just watching your video and I must say I enjoy their immensely and you have a lot of interesting advice regarding the phonak open and closing vent you failed to tell your audience is that you need to replace them every 6 months which can be a costly exercise approximately $100 X 2 Australian per 6 months when you pay so much for an devices and the microphones are not under warranty and the open and closed speaker is not recommended 4 people who suffer from tinnitus regards Mark

@@DrCliffAuD Hi Doctor Cliff thank you for your prompt reply I was reading phonak paperwork regarding the active vent speaker and as you say it may not be mandatory that you change every 6 months but they are suggesting to do that which could cost quite a bit of extra money and I spoke to an Australian audiologist yesterday and he said to me that they need to be replaced in shop you cannot do it yourself which brings up another problem where we live is too far away from the major cities and it clearly states in their paperwork that is not suitable for people with tinnitus. I also I'm under the impression that there are two active vent systems where one is a titanium speaker with the active vent or just a normal active vent and you also can get specially made rubber plugs for your ears to plug off any outside noise is this correct also please advise regards Mark

Your review of the ActiveVent mentioned that Phonak recommends changing the receivers every six months. As my insurance does not cover that and I think I would only stream music at home I was wondering if I could get one pair of closed fitted receivers for home and then switch them for a pair of open vented ones my-self when going out? For this to work, could the HAs be setup so that when streaming they were programmed for the closed fitted receivers and the rest of the time were programmed for the open vented receivers? Thanks very much, Steve

I trialed it for my right ear as my left is more occluded. Pros - sound quality with the active vent was very good. In really noisy environments it goes into closed mode. Cons - you can’t do REM’s with it, only in open mode ie a quiet environment setting. The sound of the vent opening and closing is off putting When the system changes from say a noisy environment to quiet it takes a few seconds to adjust. The app is terrible takes 7-8 seconds to connect You make some minor changes then, lock the phone and it goes back to the previous settings. - yes it is on the correct firmware. I’ve tried standard receivers and the audio quality for streaming is very distorted. Currently comparing with the oticon more 1 - now the My Music setting is amazing! No distortion at all.

It seems to me, based upon your videos that push Phonak hearing aids, that Phonak leads the field in what I would call bells and whistles added to hearing aids. What I have not seen you address is how Phonak hearing aids compare to my Oticon More hearing aids in doing the basic job of hearing in a variety of situations that don't require the bells and whistles. Can you do one of those?

I have in my left ear: at 250Hz: (ac+mask -> 50dB), (ac->45dB) from 700Hz to 2000Hz both thresholds are lower (better) than 40dB. the right ear threshold is lower than 40dB all the way until 2000Hz. I am actually trialing the Active Vent right now if you’re surfing on your phone the static click drives me nuts. It constantly clicking on and off between searches. I thought I would be okay originally but after using it a few days and the 6 month replacement cost it’s a deal breaker for me. I give Phonak credit for trying this but it really needs a noise canceling feature to eliminate the static click sound.

You should have your provider create a standard program that has the vent closed that you can go into before surfing on your phone. That way, if you are in that program, you will keep the vent closed when going in and out of streaming.

This video explains why my Widex Moment 4 hearing aids are very poor for music even with the Music program running. I take my hearing aids out to listen to music. On iPhone X running iOS 15, I input my audiogram and it applies equalization adjustments to Airpods Pro. Slick! The improvement was substantial. On Android I use WAVELET APP and Sony WH-1000-XM4 headphones. WAVELET applies the same equalization to each ear. The correction is an approximation by me. But, the compelling feature of WAVELET APP is the database of equalization parameters for hundreds of bluetooth headphones, earphone, and earbuds. For me, the Android/WAVELET/Sony WH-1000-XM4 is noticeably better than the iPhone/Audiogram/Airpods Pro. What would be great for Android would be a program that input an audiogram and output the equalization parameters taking the guesswork away. Alternatively on iPhone, an automated way to neutralize the sound bias by bluetooth headphone, earphone, earbud. Both are *heaps* better than listening to music through my hearing aids. Again for me, the Android/WAVELET is the best so far.

Thank you, Dr. Cliff, for another of your countless informative videos. I hope you can answer a question for me. I occasionally stream from my phone or tablet, but, as a musician/audiophile, more than 90% of music listening is from my rather high-end stereo (i.e., $5000 speakers) system. I have Phonak Marvel aids and my question is: Does all the info you provided in this video apply only to streaming, or does it apply equally to 'open-ear' listening (music coming from speakers)? I am using vented domes; is this a factor for bass response and if so, would unvented domes provide better bass response? I don’t advise you to listen to music with hearing loss, the hearing aid is just a volume amplifier (I think you already know this), no doubt it’s very good that they were invented to understand speech, but once again loading an already damaged hearing is a bad idea. The best thing you can do pray that gene therapy or stem cell therapy will work. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is not strain your ears again.
@Pilski
@Pilski 2 жыл бұрын
@@pipiapi3855 Thank you for the reply; however, my hearing loss is high frequency, certainly not the entire spectrum. Hearing aids restore the ability to hear, again, the upper ranges. (mids and lows sound very much the same with or without the aids) I understand and appreciate your point, but I'm not using the aids to merely 'pump the volume into my ears'. I listen at a level that is reasonable and comfortable and don't feel the light to moderate amplification to provide the highs to be damaging.

@@Pilski I also listen to a lot of music and have a decent setup. I have only recently started using the (UK) NHS Phonak hearing aids which do not contain the tech described in the video. I think that tech ONLY applies to music streamed into the ear and I'm pretty sure it still would not sound as good as a pair of IEM which have been setup on (Samsung) Adaptive sound setting on the phone. Streaming to my HA's is terrible compared to the IEMs. The first thing I did when I got the HA's was to listen to music on the stereo speakers. I used the app to turn the HA's on and off whilst playing, the HA's improve the higher end and it sounds really good I spent two hours listening to loads of stuff :) So from what I've found. I would like to try the ones in the video but I don;t think they would be a match for even the cheaper IEMs setup properly, I know streaming gets rid of the cable but the quality is more important.

I checked out the candidacy chart for the activevent receiver. My hearing loss is at 60-65dB at the lower frequencies, so unfortunately I am not a good candidate for this technology.

You just need a closed vent all the time.

@@DrCliffAuD Thank you so much for the response! If I have the close vent, wouldn't I get the occlusion effect? Do you ever get used to it?
@DrCliffAuD

@@michaelcampbell8324 occlusion effect is only present with individuals with low frequency thresholds at 50 dBHL and below. Any effect of your own voice being too loud is a product of the amplification and you will get used to it.

I own P30-13 and P30-R and the Phonak remote can I BT pair both P30-13 and P30-R to my Phonak pocket remote? Again Own P30-13 and P30-R and one hand held Phonak BT pocket remote can I pair both P30s to one remote? Why -13 and -R -13 is better than the recarable due to the -13 battery last 1 week where the -R I have to charge each day. Also P30-R are only good for 6 years and the -R battery is not repacable and you can not buy -R battery from Phonak or PowerOne companies P30-13 are a better hearing Aid and Unlimited Life.

While I applaude hearing aid manufacturers working to improve music streaming, they are sadly missing an opportunity to improve hearing music in a live environment. Their terminology, RIC, is misleading as the "receiver" (except for Resound) has nothing to do with receiving. The "receiver" is in actuality a transmitter of the sound received by the device behind the ear. With placement of microphones on the top and to the back of the ear, both directionality and perception of stereo is lost. Using conventional hearing aids, live music becomes monophonic sound. When will they wake up and use the pinna.

How about listening to live or recorded music, not streamed music. How do you adjust a patient's hearing aids for better sound quality for music (audiophile or a musician)?

Uh oh! Second video in 10 minutes that sounds like a commercial for Phonak. You really should say something about your opinions not being biased by your relationship with Phonak.

I have on a trial basis a pair of Widex 330 RIC and I am using the Widex app,but after trying them for half a day,I decided to try them listening to my stereo speakers and they sounded like garbage...I had the bas turned all the way up and the midrange and treble turned all the way down using the Widex app and it still sounded like a cheap clock radio....what is the trick to getting good sound from speakers?...I don't stream from my phone into my HA's at all..... Right now,I am basically listening to my HA's,not my stereo...HELP!!

It's more about psychoacoustics. If you had open venting then you lost the bass. Watch the video and it should make sense.
