I was blessed with the most wonderful husband. I became very sick a few years ago and my husband stepped up to the plate and started doing whatever needed to be done. Now that I am starting to feel better he still does about 75% of the housework and 100% of the yard work.

We’ve been married over 40 years and Continue to have the conversations about groceries, cooking, dishes, household chores, yard work, laundry, cars, finances, social life, technology. Our lives keep changing with retirement, part time work, nannying the grandkids part time. We are flexible, we treat each other with grace and apologize when we need too.

Tidy Dad, you as one with a teacher's heart [as am I, but I'm MUCH older!] you follow the adage of "Give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish..." So important at every age!

Good math teacher's don't grow on trees!!!.....what an awesome guest with such practical, insightful wisdom!!!....love Dawn's statement about "it's not an employee problem, it's a management problem"....."I....we....you".....so brilliant!!!.....keeping our homes "tidy and clean" as you go!!!....keep it simple with less stuff, really helps keep everyone on the same page.....

I often will make indirect compliments to motivate my husband. Like "wow I just love cooking dinner in a tidy kitchen" or "I find it so much easier and enjoyable to clean the living room now". If I'm happy my husband takes credit and is happy. :)

Finally, someone who shares my calming closet trick. I keep my closet very well sorted and have the clothes hanging in rainbow order and this last year I emptied it out and painted the walls a light sage green color-makes me think of a spa. :) Sometimes I just stand there looking at it to destress.

When I had my first classroom, the retiring teacher who left it, didn’t even clean her candy wrappers from the desk. When I retired, I left the incoming teacher the classroom I always wished I had. Totally clean and organized. My colleague left her classroom of 20 years with only a Starbucks bag. The new teacher inherited all her junk

I love this! I can relate a lot, as 2 young parents working full time with a 3 year old and 4 month old daughters. The second baby was much harder and the open conversation about task management is so important!

Wow so many emotions brought up with this conversation. It’s so true that women can feel like we have to do it all (especially if they stay at home and husband goes to work). The sad thing is, so many women tell us that we do have to do it all ourself, either directly or indirectly. Some will never say what tidy dad said: “ you need to have that conversation.”

I love Tidy Dad. I have followed him for a while now. I was told once the secret to a tidy house is to not leave the room empty handed, and the story of the teacher just moving things back around the room during the course of the day just reminds me of that statement.

So frustrating! All my family members walk right past something that needs taken upstairs or to another room. Even the husband. So I guess we have to chat again.

Oh my gosh, I so agree that a new teacher inheriting some old teacher’s 35 years of stuff is the worst as I was put in that position too. Add in a principal who is suspicious of materials leaving the classroom 🙄 and it was a very difficult thing to deal with. From then on I kept a very tidy classroom.

You make me want to come spend the summer back home in PA. Ugh I miss it so much. I'll get about a week this year and that's it. The country life is for me but unfortunately it's just not possible right now. It's so hard sometimes to change your will to what the Lord wants you and your husband to do. But it's so much better than fighting the Lord. Whatever he wants is always best and you'll be happier in the end.

I am so guilty of not equipping my kids with the skills because I feel like they'd do it wrong and it would take twice the time 😬😬 I totally need to work on it, especially for my oldest who is almost 8

I’ve had the conversation several times over the years with my husband, because he truly doesn’t see any problem with the kitchen piling up or the bathroom getting dirty. I’ve always said that there is no such thing as a nagging wife, if the husband would just do what we ask the first time we ask him! I’ve just come to the conclusion that it is just a part of his personality in being messy certain places in our house. I just have to concentrate on all the stuff that he does help me with, like laundry and eventually dishes, etc.

I see too many families where the parents are the maids because they let their kids refuse to help out with chores.

A friendly comment about the premise in the podcast title: Dads don't "help," they contribute their part to the family and household, just like Moms do. 😉

I love how he broke down getting kids ro clean. They dont know how unless theyre taught and you have to word things differently, because theyre can be super literal.

We have 3 kids, are moving and both work different shifts so the kids dont have to be in daycare. We are also planning on homeschooling next year. If we dont communicate and share roles its a disaster.

Oh my gosh😂 we live in a small town everyone knows everyone so someone would’ve told me. plus teenagers are easily embarrassed. I would’ve come to school and wore a sign that stated I’m here because my child doesn’t know how to behave correctly.

Hey Tidy Dad, I would love to listen to your podcasts, if you have any, or videos pertaining to how to choose, set up, and establish systems in place. For someone who has some ADHD tendencies, is a bit sensory sensitive, and empathic, who battles with mild depression periodically; the intention is to find ways to make it fun, inclusive teamwork for the whole household, and pre-kids vs. post-kids breakdowns into time chunks. My parents never taught me how to tidy nor clean, and actually looked down at it as a hired hand, but got angry for me not doing things. I struggle with trauma coming up sometimes as a way of processing emotions as I’m trying to clean, often afraid of throwing anything away, and executive function skills. We are working on it, but consistency is key for what we’re going for, and visual systems set in place, with reminders on what to do and how to check in emotionally or turn what we are feeling into something helpful? Thanks so much!!

I would hate that chair changing thing. ASD people want the same thing, so the light and the sound are coming from the same angle. Even deeper, some people hate to sit in the middle because the noise is coming from every direction. Can't be cured, and it is torture for her to move her around. It's not going to be better. She might not even know why she feels so strong where she sits.
