Sir now things has changed everyone is money minded. The cafes in my small city charges 20+ and elite cafes 40+ Even Govt buildings like Townhall are 20-30K even for drama clubs, Resorts Garden with one room (for make up and change) 10-30K, that too in non wedding season Now even most school has started charging for their halls... But as you said yes it can be done if you are passionate about filmmaking, always make 5 location backup options. I got locations free of cost for my last short (2 Bunglows, 1 Superspeciality hospital, 1 Cafe, My own House) #1. Cafe / Bar are not free, as they have daily sale. Even if you somehow get these locations free, you have issues while taping, blocking, Wire for Lighting, Shifting for making the required frame I usually shoot shorts on Tuesday (Non Veg not serving) / Sunday (Near College) (Few are closed on these days) and arrange crew food in that cafe / restaurant itself, it comes expensive but Crew is happy to have quality food, eats hot and the location is free with their logo in film #2. Try to Shoot early morning, as people and traffic is issue, if light is proper and scene can be done at that timing #3: Make a local film club with like minded people, we share each other house and equipment and even team #4: Give a small role to local businessman / Politician, they usually have amazing bunglows and support staff, indie filmmaker ko kya kya nahi karna padta @lol #5: Gorilla shoot is better, if you skip old school (as most short film makers in India are over obsessed with super stable shots on tripod), look into international short films, and even anurag kashyap films, get handheld (with stabilized dslr) and if possible lenses with in image stabilization #6: Shoot in 4K or higher, so in post - warp stabilizer the crop dose'nt cut your film frame much, when handheld #7: Always recce locations and shoot pre-videos, many time the initial setup itself takes half a day for new film makers #8: Start as early as 7-8 am, so before cast comes in you / dop / lighting / production prepare everything, its always late if you start late #9: As short film maker you dont have money, so managing same free dates for all - free location, with affordable dop, equipment rent, free actors is always a problem #10: Always take a proper permission for public places, will save time and hassle, and you will be mentally free
