How to Get Great Lighting in Your Next Home Renovation

Great lighting is a value multiplier for any home renovation. What's the point of choosing great colors and finishes if they don't pop? Why bother creating beautiful focal points if the light doesn't guide you there? Why invest in a fantastic space and then lighting it poorly?
But even if you want amazing lighting how do you get it?
In this video, I'll show you how to go from average to amazing. What players you need on your team to get great lighting, how to source (purchase) the right lighting and then some basic controls options.

You’ve pretty much nailed it. I’ve just started the planning stage for my 1940’s 1500 sqft bungalow. Hoping to diy as much of the tradesmen work possible. Taking out the attic insulation for air sealing will allow updating the lighting. I look forward to your videos 🙏 Thanks

Subscribed! Great content. I do believe that, lighting is one of the most ignored tasks during home building or renovation projects. Not to mention gets allocated the lest amount of budget. When in-fact great lighting can increase the value of a home. If you can, can you show examples of homes with good/great lighting and walkthrough them?

I'm in the midst of my complete kitchen reno (I'm doing the work) and we didn't have a lighting plan. I have, however, convinced my wife on the need to spend more time on a plan instead of rushing to "just finish the job". This said, my budget is fairly tight and I'm trying to find a source for the best bang for your buck recessed lights.

There are options along every price point. The main thing to consider is that you want the source tucked out of the eye line.

In an upcoming video, could you please give some examples of good downlights (would you recommend gimbal fixtures, etc) and how they would work well in, say, a kitchen renovenation? i don't really want my kitchen ceiling to look like an airport runway. What's your opinion on having LED ceiling lights in every room of the home, as a foundational layer of light to build on as needed in each space?

This is considered pretty common practice by architectural lighting designers. But! Downlights alone will feel clinical without other layers of light 💡
