Other Harvard schools do not possess greater depth per se. It’d be better to highlight the main difference between the ALM Management degree program’s shorter length (12 courses) v. a traditional/HBS MBA (~18 courses). The HES ALM Mgmt. degree is constitutionally different from an MBA: The avg. age of a Harvard MBA student is 27, whereas the ALM degree candidate (“admitted student,” for the uninitiated) is 35. The ALM candidate generally has more work experience. The ALM graduate program reflects the avg. amt. of required courses for a master’s: 12. This degree is *generally* for working professionals, parents, and others with real-life responsibilities, professional work experience, and *insane* work ethic/drive. The ALM would be more appropriately compared with an Executive Master’s in Management[/IT/Finance/_____], MPS, or Master’s in [Field]. Conversely, other master’s degree programs at HU are of the same length as HES’ and are qualitatively equal. Josh is absolutely correct, however, about HBS’ territoriality: They are simply maintaining their micro (intra-Harvard) brand, especially given the fact that the HBS MBA costs ~$220k. (Tuition only will run you ~$140k). In stark contrast, a Harvard Extension graduate degree in business will cost you ~$35k for tuition and somewhere in the ballpark of $40-60k *out the door,* considering living expenses, and how much you need to borrow. If you somehow NEED an MBA, search for EMBAs or residential MBAs for your employer to bless. However, if you need the best professional or academic education possible-partisan politics aside 😡-I couldn’t think of a better, custom-tailored tier-one program to fit my professional-advancement needs. Chuck elitism and insecurity, boys and gals. If it seems like it’s for you, visit campus, interview alumni m, students, and staff, and then DON’T HESITATE; take the plunge. After finishing a traditional Ivy BA and top-rated European programs years before, I needed a non-resident Ivy grad degree bc of employment constraints. (I rejected a shoo-in to an Ivy law school straight from the dean’s mouth. I’m happy I did. And while the elitist, old-guard admin is doing its damndest to keep antiquated, academically inaccurate monikers in place, don’t worry about it; it’s being handled by yours truly and fellow admitted friends. Confidence + Goal in Mind + Extraordinary Discipline + Regular Workouts + Proper Sleep Hygiene + The Hardest Working SOB You Know + Modesty and Self-Respect and -Care: That is the formula to the ALB or ALM, as the case may be. This ^ right here is proof of the finals insomnia. Don’f worry; it’ll be worth it. God bless as never give up. You can and WIKK earn the education you desire and for which you work harder than anyone else. Now, just apply! 🙂👍🏼

I found your videos through your "i got into harvard" video when i was applied to Harvard Ed this year. Subscribed right after; vid quality is so good. Yes, harvard extension is not recognized as "Harvard" with a capital H by many people, but regardless, if you go out of Boston, most people don't know the difference. It's definitely stigmatized by the other schools at Harvard, and is not considered part of the "top" schools at the university like Harvard business, law, or even Harvard college, but regardless, it's not really what school you go to, it's what you do with it that really matters. I have friends who went to ivy's for undergrad and are living in their parents house....so yeah. Good for you Josh!

This is absolutely not true. All faculty, students and staff have treated me and all HES students like family. No one has ever said one bad word about a HES student at Harvard. If anyone does so, they clearly don’t go to Harvard. HES has been a part of Harvard for over a century. It’s not some online school that got developed ten years ago…lol. Bollocks. It’s one of the hardest schools at Harvard and is recognized as such. Anyone trying to attack a Harvard student from any of the 13 colleges is just a hater. Call it what it is. Good ole fashioned jealousy.

Thanks for linking my video, “Is Harvard Extension Really Harvard?” I would add that it is a little misleading to say that HES is the easier way to get into Harvard, the admissions process may be unique but it isn’t a backdoor to Harvard, many people who took courses to get admitted (that I was in) had to drop out because they couldn’t keep up with the coursework. HES is Harvard.

Hey, that's a good question. I know that you can apply for financial aid, but I haven't heard about them offering scholarships. Let me look into it.

5:12 You accurately state that you are earning a "Master's Degree in Liberal Arts," but on your LinkedIn profile (www.linkedin.com/in/josh-drean-0726a825/) you omitted the "in Liberal Arts" as well as any mention of the Extension School. You are correct in saying there is a stigma around the "Extension School," but it's not because you didn't get in the "hard way" as stated in your video, but rather the stigma comes from the fact that Extension School students/grads have a proclivity to obfuscate or misrepresent the fact that their degree comes from the Extension School - as you yourself have done in your LinkedIn profile. The Extension School actually requires its graduates to make this distinction clear in their resumes and LinkedIn profiles (www.extension.harvard.edu/resources-policies/completing-your-degree/graduation-honors), but you, like many Extension School grads, have only displayed “Harvard University” on your LinkedIn profile while leaving out the required “In Extension Studies” label that the Extension School requires. When people see "Harvard University," they assume it means Harvard College or the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, so to insist on using "Harvard University" means you are either fooling yourself or even worse deliberately attempting to mislead people. I'm sure your argument is the typical Extension School grad refrain: “Harvard Extension School is one of the 13 degree-granting schools, therefore I have the right to use ‘Harvard University’.” It’s a convenient excuse that lets you sidestep the stigma and questions from other people, but it really reflects poorly on you. You should be proud of the school you received your degree from instead of trying to hide from it.

Your video was smooth and fluid. This is the first video about HES that I have seen where the student/alumni haven't mumbled or gave an unprofessional demonstration filled with "um's" and other filler words. Thank you for that. I was beginning to wonder about the validity of course work due to the stammering I have witnessed. It's difficult to get a read about an institution without competency in how people describe their experiences. Again, your presentation is greatly appreciated.

I love your videos! And your attitude, I feel like you would be an amazing person to just hang with. I actually would love to visit Boston, I live in Philadelphia but Boston is definitely on my list. I will also be turning 19 soon and geez, I wish I worked much harder in high school than I did. Especially because since my mom is the Senior director of HR at Eastern University, if I had the grades for it I could've totally went to Villanova for free! Or I would've at least just been eligible to attend Harvard if I maintained a 4.1+ But I'm so glad you informed us about this, I had no idea. I'm gonna be a Creative writing/Film and Art major but there's also this side to me that desires to be a History teacher at a private school overseas, or a professor at a University. Sigh. So many roads to take but I will always remember when you said, "Success is not so much about talent or skill but setting your sights on a very specific desire. If you can be specific on what you want, it's like the universe will align to give it to you. Just dial it in, focus on it, and it'll happen." That is definitely a quote that I will live by!

Getting in is easier, graduating is really hard because of the rigor. Less than %1 of on an annual assembly of 25,000-50,000 degree seeking students actually earn a degree. The annual graduating class is really small 40-100 people a year for both bachelors and masters. It’s when you graduate from Harvard especially while working a full time job and not having any student debt is when people are truly impressed.

I came into this video ready to rip him a new one, but then noticed it was clickbait. The Harvard Extension School is literally going to Harvard while keeping a full-time job at the same time. It is AWFUL, the attrition rates are insane (only the very commited get to graduate) and the gatekeeper courses require B+, you need at least a B on every course thereafter for it to count towards your degree. (and getting a B at Harvard is no piece of cake, this was my third graduate degree and a B at Harvard is like an A+ at other universities) some classes are a nightmare I vividly remember going 50 something hours without sleep on a week where I had finals while at the same time having to work. It is NOT EASY, and the rest of the harvard students think they're better than you (I would gladly trade places with them and see how they do when they have half the time to complete "Harvard Level" work) ¿and guess what happens if you don't get to B by 1%? Yeah, that money is gone! Getting in is not the problem, it's graduating. They will not care if you're studying from a country where the exchange rate is 3.5 times more expensive (Those of us who don't earn in dollars have huge issues making ends meet) I think something broke inside of me while attending HES, I'm very grateful I got to graduate with a Master's degree, but I'm not the same person I was going in.

You have no idea how hard it is to get a good grade on these courses while you are away from the United States. I have to arrange for the proctors myself in South Korea where I did not attend any of university or secondary education in Korea. Also, I had to take courses while I was in China, and I did not speak any Chinese at that time. So, to get along in the country was a challenge in of itself. Not only that I had to find proctors, and I had to get over the internet problem. You might not know, but internet connection in China was SLOW. And living the opposite side of the earth. I had to wait for the video to be uploaded while everybody just finished their classes in the United States. Living the other side of the earth, I felt that I was left to take care of EVERYTHING on my own from taking courses to getting into America as well. Not to mention some of the students have VISA problems since America has tightened up the border after homeland security act.

This is the equivalent to the purgatory. The Harvard's Gods love us sooo much that they want us to go to heaven (Harvard) and gave us (sinners) the oportunity to redime ourselves... Priceless... I wonder how much time these three courses take?
@kungfoochicken085 жыл бұрын
They're normal, semester-long, courses. You could complete all three in one semester and enroll the following semester. These courses also count towards your degree.

Hi, I would love to know more about Gatekeeper Courses. How long will it take to finish? I'm living in Texas now and might have to move there temporarily to get it done.
@kungfoochicken085 жыл бұрын
The gatekeeper courses can be completed in one semester. You can complete them all online.

Is it possible to attend HES overseas and through online courses (so you don't need to be present at Harvard campus)?

To confirm, the three classes required will not be covered by Financial Aid and I have to take them on campus?
@joshdrean Жыл бұрын
There are alternative options for student aid and you only need to take one on campus. Most courses offer online classes with an on campus weekend, which counts as your on campus course, so essentially you only have to fly into campus for one week.
