I used to be a big chevy guy and in 13 I bought a ram. We tow dump trailers running concrete-machines-gravel and grass. Picking the right truck for me was very hard. The dollar starts with the keys in your hands. So many variables to choose from. I like trucks so much I ended up buying all three 15' chevy, 16'ford and 13' ram. The ford is new so I can't tell yet how it tows. Almost bought a 17' ford but it scared if it breaks down and the dealer couldn't get parts because its so new. One thing about it, if a truck gos down in my business three to four guys don't work. Picking the right truck can make or break a new business owner. My old 7.3 ford went into the shop last year with 220,000 miles and it costed $12,000.00 to fix right. owning a diesel, there will be a day of reckoning when you fork out money on the engine. Or pay monthly on a newer truck and hope shit don't hit the fan.

So true about the fuel capacity concerns. I took a cross country trip 6500 miles in 13 days from Upstate NY to Wyoming, Utah, Colorado. Idaho etc. Between the speed limits out there, mud tires, and the 25 gallon tanks on half ton trucks, my 05 silverado could only go 250-280 miles on a tank. I was filling up 3 times in one day sometimes. It definitely got a bit annoying at times. If I were putting on those kind of miles all the time I'd want at least 400 mile range or so. Heck, my 82 mile round trip commute to work hurts too. I'm filling up 3-4 times a week. Good fuel range is supremely helpful in any case really!

@nickl22687 жыл бұрын
well, saying 26001 and under doesn't need a CDL is kinda of misleading, Because it's not about the weight it's about what your truck and trailer are rated for, so technically to stay under CDL your gonna need a SRW truck and a trailer that will keep you under 26001 GVWR
@pddieselpower7 жыл бұрын
Nick Larson True. Sorry. To stay away from cdl you need to be under 26k on scales with your whole setup including load. And gvwr of both Truck and trailer needs to add up under 26k

PD Diesel Power does it matter what year you truck is once you get started?

My f350 dually is 13k gvwr and the trailer is 10k gvwr = 23k total gvwr. The trailer weighs about 2k lbs and truck is at about 9k lbs. I can carry about 8k load on my truck. No CDL required. Just have to have insurance, dot/mc number, and business setup and what ever else the state requires.

You are 100% wrong about that (not meaning it in a mean way).....but as long as you are a "for hire" company with dot authority you are REQUIRED a CDL.

A Class A CDL License is required when the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Ratings (GCVWR) of the truck and trailer totals 26,001 or more provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

So how old are you now?
@geraldthomas2187 жыл бұрын
PD Diesel power: You did mention that as long as it does not exceed 26,001 (combined weight) on the scale. That's what I thought. But what if I got pulled over by DOT with an empty bed and a gooseneck carrying a decent size load and they read the decal of the pickup truck stating 11200 GVWR and the one on the trailer with a GVWR of 18,000? Would they go by the decal's if they felt that I was over? They can't estimate without the scale. I'm considering 26,000 under with a GMC Sierra double cab long bed; Hartford, Connecticut. Regarding 4wd, if a 14 wheel tractor/trailer (single drive axle) can navigate moderate snow, shouldn't a 2wd with a trailer do the same?
@pddieselpower7 жыл бұрын
Garfield Thomas. You would need a cdl for the setup your talking about. Because your gvt or gvwr cant exceed 26000. So even if your empty you still need a cdl. Now if for example your gvwr is 12k on the truck and 13k on the trailer. Thats 25k but you come across the scales at 25,500 no one will give a rip as long as your weight is paid for. So to not need a cdl. You cant exceed 26k gvt and gvwr. Hope that helps. Keep in mind alot of the state patrols dont even know all of this stuff. And there allowed to inspect us. lol. Talk to the feds if you ever need a legal question answered. Or me :) but im not your legal advocate. :) As far as the 2wd. Hotshots are not tractor trailer setups. They dont take on the high weight ratio on there drives. Therefore they dont get that weight per square inch to cut thru to that pavement. Let me know if you would like a short video about that. That would be the easiest way for me to explain.

The only reason why I wouldn't want 4wd is because of the fuel mileage penalty. Do you really think its recommended at 26k and under? Also, 14GN has a gvwr of 15,900. BigTex sometimes uses the model designation to include the first two digits of the trailers gvwr, like 20GN is 20,000 gvwr. So is the 14GN passing for 14,000 despite its actual max capacity?

+Garfield Thomas For me, yes 26k is where its at. But remember that just for me. Everyone has there own ways and customers. And yes seems like bigtex uses that as a ball park. Like 14gn and 20gn. As far as what can you load on the trailer really depends how good you can distribute the weight on your trailer with not going over weight limitations on your axles and tires. But for a ball park, a 14gn will probably max out around 11k behind a srw truck. That is 12k in load perfectly balanced and with the right truck.

PD Diesel Power 10320 lbs. would be the max with a 28 + 5. Thank for the response. I'm gonna look at some other stuff because I may just go and get a class A CDL. A regular doctors visit and a log book shouldn't be a burden for the license.

not true, you dont, if the truck you’re towing with DOES NOT have commercial plates you DO NOT need a CDL unless otherwise stated. now this opens other “doors” in New Jersey where i am originally from my truck a 2005 Ford F250 never ever needed commercial plates because of its weight or what it can tow, and i wouldnt need a cdl to run a licensed commercial business if i wanted to but if i worked for public works or something like that or drive a school bus you NEED a cdl, now i am in North Carolina where my same truck HAS to have commercial plates (called Weighted plates) due to its weight and what it can tow, i dont have a CDL but as soon as i wanted to use my truck as a licensed commercial business vehicle i NEED a cdl this is not specific to the truck all 250’s and 2500’s doesnt matter Ford Dodge GM whatever, its up to the state you live in and are licensed in.

RyanPlays If that trailer is rated for 10,000 lbs or your hauling with the weight over 10,000 you do need a CDL.
@scotmccray1307 жыл бұрын
If a combination vehicle exceeds 10,001 lbs. You are required to have a CDL.
@andreas_reyes7 жыл бұрын
No, you are wrong for most states. You are required to have a class A CDL is your GCWR is 26,001 lbs or more provided the towed vehicle is 10,001 lbs or more. If your GCWR is under 26,001 lbs, so 26,000 or less, you don't need a Class A CDL with a trailer that is 10,001lb +, however, you will need a medical certificate. Of course states such as Florida, Commifornia, New York and such, you'd be right...
