I'm 22 and I did an access to medicine course as well, and I ended up with all distinctions which I was so ridiculously proud of. I'm not actually sure if medicine is something I want to pursue, so I'm going to be studying biomedical science at Cardiff University this September/October. I did an access course because I don't have A levels as I've only ever completed the first year and those were in humanities. I think access courses are a God send and it's really cool that you can still pursue aspirations of becoming a doctor or scientist because of them.

@@dressedwithmia i would if you can afford it. As opposed to other places, you can't get the advanced learners loan for it so it does mean you lay out of pocket. However, I had a very positive experience with them. Tutors are lovely and give detailed feedback, the material they provide is comprehensive and the most important aspect for me was that it's online. I got all distinctions and offered places in 5 Russel group universities with this course.

Hi Rebecca! Thank you sooo much for the informative video, just what I was looking for. And also congratulations for achieving your dream, regardless of what people told you. I am 24 years old and currently doing a Master degree in clinical, health and neuropsychology and I also have BSc in psychology, however I really want to go into medicine. Unfortunately I don't have the sufficient maths GCSE, although the rest are ok. Also, I didn't take the relevant A-levels so now I'm thinking that my best option is to do an Access course. However even the access course's requirements are minimum B at GCSE's so I really don't know what to do! Would you recommend me to re-take my GCSE's in Maths only? And do you know if universities would accept re-takes and an access course? Thank you Lana

Hi Rebecca. THANK YOU! It really means a lot to see someone who's had a similar path educationally to me doing this. It feels so isolating going on this journey not knowing other peoples experiences that have gone before me. Watching this video has been very encouraging for me. I was too sick to get any qualifications at all growing up, I took my first set of GCSEs at 23 before the pandemic and thankfully got an A in all of them. Ive had to take a year out before the access course due to covid, but I'm using this time to become a stronger applicant overall. I'm just curious about a couple of things if you dont mind? How did you get on with the UCAT? Any tips specifically for verbal reasoning? I'm aware that Bristol is one of the med schools with a higher UCAT cut off than most other unis I'm looking at. Its one of the uni's Id love to apply to, but I'm unsure because I dont know whether I can get 670+ in my UCAT. Although I did a few mocks last year for individual sections and my average was around 670, but having never taken the exam I dont feel 100% confident that I can pull that off in exam conditions yet. Plenty of time to practise I suppose! Another thing is: Do you think its helpful to study a month before starting the access course? The medical schools council have released guidence that apparently most colleges have to follow. In there is all sorts of useful information about what subjects are covered in each module. I'm wondering if I should use that a month before starting the course to get plenty of time ahead to assure that I can fully absorb everything there is that needs to be learnt. (this is the link if anyones curious: www.qaa.ac.uk/docs/qaa/about-us/access-to-he-diploma-subject-descriptor-medicine.pdf ) Sorry for the wall of text, and thanks for the video!

Hi Rebecca. I finished high school in 1993 (South Africa) and do not have GCSE's or A levels. I also didn't achieve fantastic marks in Maths, English and Science. I am seriously considering an Access To Higher Education - Medicine pathway course at a college in Norfolk. My concern is that I have not touched on Maths, Chemistry and Physics for many years and I may struggle with the basics covered in the pre-med course?
