How to Get Involved With Local Government

I applied to hold public office a few years ago, and was appointed to serve on the Beautification Commission. Litter and waste reduction fell under our purview.
Commissioners advise the city council on legislation pertaining to their area of expertise so as someone who's very interested in waste reduction and policy this was a perfect fit.

A fellow Arkansan! I live in a small town in central Arkansas and I’m working with my mayor to form a sustainability committee. What are your thoughts on committee vs commission? I’m very new to this so any advice would be great!

Hey as someone who lives very far from the us, from the american zero waste brands because I live in Israel and since the UK is relatively close to israel I am interested in the best uk zero waste brands or maybe a company that sells sells like aton of the things I would need from different brands, like Earthhero, can I have some reccemondations?? Tnx😊

How was it working w/ the people on your Board? If discussion was ever difficult, were there ways to bring it back to common ground? Compromise is so important, but so hard sometimes haha. (Thank you Nala for blessing us w/ the back of ur head💕)

This is the best comment! We all got along pretty well. There were 5 of us the first two years but we expanded to 7 in the third year so we could form more subcommittees to be able to work on more projects. Our purview was so broad and I often got push back for focusing too much on litter and trash. But, that is my expertise and I was more than happy to go along with other beautifying measures. All in all it was a really good experience.

How would you recommend a teenager to get involved? I’m fourteen so I can’t vote and feel like I can’t really do much... any recommendations?

In Wales they have youth council, the youth welsh government and the youth U.K. government. Maybe they have something similar near you. I would also look for youth groups which are political such as RECLAIM if you are in the UK

See if you can volunteer for a campaign or balloy initiative

You could still present ideas and work with a commission if you wanted to! I would have loved to have help you work on crafting legislation and getting your idea in front of city council. :)

I'm an environmental professional. I grew up conservative and as adult I did research. And I become a stronger conservative. I am republican and I care for the environment. I help protect the environment for a living. #engineer

What research are you talking about ? Hopefully, the democratic party was much different than the current existing party. Making companies get rid of bags all together due to complications when paper bags are helpful just didn't help. That was not a good example.

"Going zero waste" is an impossible task that will hurt productivity. Very typical of a democrat to send money into.

So a person who now lives on their own came to make their own decisions and think for themselves given their environment and the future they would like to see for their community. What makes you think you weren't brainwashed yourself growing up or even now? Because you feel strongly with your beliefs and they are your own? Institutions of higher education are not just places of liberal brainwashing.

Went from parents' conservative values that our country had success with, to a brainwashed democrat taking funds to impossible tasks like "going zero waste" give me a break! The country could sure use one!
