In this episode we will show you the best way to get money (currency) when you travel to Colombia. When you are on vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is having enough local currency to do all of the fun things you want to do. Our goal is to help you to get the local currency at the best price without paying crazy fees.
$3.00 U.S. Dollars for 2 People To Eat Lunch IS Normal. Food and beer is generally very cheap if you eat like a local. We also aim to give you an idea of what common items cost in the country. Colombia is a fantastic destination for vacation, expats, and extended vacations or sabbaticals. The U.S. dollar generally goes a long way if you stick to local activities.
PLEASE BE ADVISED: ATM's CLOSE IN COLOMBIA. EVERY ATM & BANK HAS DIFFERENT HOURS. IF YOU WILL ARRIVE IN THE COUNTRY VERY LATE OR VERY EARLY, I SUGGEST YOU BRING A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR SOME FOOD AND A TAXI. AROUND $100,000 COP (COLOMBIAN PESOS). REMEMBER, THE EXCHANGE RATE CHANGES DAILY. BE SURE TO CHECK THE EXCHANGE RATE WITH YOUR HOME CURRENCY BEFORE WITHDRAWING MONEY.

On my visits, I just use credit card (in Colombian pesos where I have the option) at most places to pay for things, and use ATMs to get some cash for tips and smaller purchases. I never accept the conversion at an ATM, but only use an ATM in a busier area to increase security. As mentioned in the video, I usually only get about 100,000 to 200,000 pesos at a time. It does last for several days at least.

All true! Thanks for the comments. They will be very helpful to people visiting for the first time. The ATM conversion rates are terrible. If you trust your bank to give you a better conversion rate, always decline the one from the ATM. Never count on credit cards to work, so always have a little back up cash for your purchases. But try not to carry more than necessary. Right now $1 USD goes a looong way. So HAVE FUN!! And don’t forget to be smart and bring your manners. The people here are wonderful!

@@imaginetravel7906 Bringing manners is very good advice. I've seen too many other Americans show up in a foreign country and act very arrogant and demanding. As far as carrying no more money than necessary, I saw one other video where the person said they carried just enough to satisfy a potential robber. 😀

😂 That’s a good way to put it. $50,000 Pesos or so should take care of that. But, if you’re smart you should easily be able to avoid that situation.

When using atm in Colombia, once you put your card and pin in the atm will give you their exchange rate and a button to accept it.... "ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS" say no and reject it... then you will get the market rate which is always higher!!!!!!

Great tip Nadim!!! It’s true. You get a better rate by declining the banks first offer. I learned this the hard way. Thank you!! Cheers!!!

Most of the ATMs accept foreign cards and have an English option. Always decline the exchange rate at the ATM because it is marked up. It will still dispense your money. Bogota is a great city and I’m sure you will have a great adventure! Safe travels!!

Hola, thanks for your wonderful content. I am currently living in Bogota, and will stay until 2023. Can you give me a suggestion where I can exchange my money to a better rate? Because sometimes the exchange is low even if the original exchange rate is 1USD=4000COP. Gracias!

Hello Abigayle Chesca Bolado! Bogota is a wonderful city! There are a lot of independent money exchanging business in Bogotá. If you have the time to explore and ask around at different locations you can find the best company. I personally use the ATM at Davivienda Bank, when it asks you if you “accept” the conversion rate, I always push “decline”. This gives me a much better conversion rate because my bank in the U.S. gives me better rates. Also, if you or a friend has a Colombian bank account it may be possible to utilize “Effecty”, “Western Union”, or some of the smaller international money transfer companies. If you are staying on a resident visa and have a Cedula Extranjero you should be able to open a bank account in Colombia. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions. I am always happy to help a fellow traveler! Cheers!
