What I've learned from another youtube is during the reference phase, start with just 5-10 references to get you started. Once you've actually begun then you'll have questions and more need for reference, so then you can add as you need. The beginning is often what sucks for me, but once I get going with a clear understanding of what I want to do I get into that flow and enjoyment state.

No matter how much I overcomplicate things followings professionals' opinions, no matter how I wander around, I always get back to the same conclusion: I want to write my own stories and make whole world building for them, starting with characters' concept art, to maps, plans of places, actual enviro to even designing some tiny objects and then making illustrations using all those things I designed. And I wouldn't mind doing such things for others' stories (not just stories as books but also films, series or any kind of games, doesn't matter whether PC games, phone apps or board games like DnD type) and I always get back to that main conclusion: when I'm done with fundamentals I will do world building for my own stuff anyway so I might as well build my portfolios around each of those projects. It would keep it in a way together plus show a bit wider skills which might be useful one day when I'll be good enough to land a job in a small studio :)

I agree with making a design process that will help the project move forward. Also, planning is probably the most important part. I made a schedule for myself to learn how to draw manga, and while it is a long schedule, I've stuck to it and am happy with the results so far.

I don't think I have worked on a project since college. I went to college for animation for 4 years and dropped out. I had the WORST burn out. I couldn't be creative for 2 years. I'm finally drawing more 7 years later and I feel better. I realize the things that I need to work on to make myself better. I try to work on gesture poses and some other stuff but I think I need a project... thanks for this video! This was great! 😁

I burned myself out but years later, I decided to get back to art because I will be completely filled with regret if I dont try. Keep pushing forward 💪 😁 Also, it's nice to see other people getting back after a long hiatus of sorts from drawing. It just shows that artists can always return to their roots.

Just wanted to say that you made some very valid points. Also, I don’t think skill really matters these day as it doesn’t matter how skilled you are, even someone new can be noticed with enough persistence and dedication. The truth of the matter though is the quantity of artists posting work online has had an impact on being noticed. The “never give up, never surrender!’’ Quote is valid In this situation, we as creatives need to keep creating, especially with AI garbage filling the digital space.

Okay now that I actually watched it until the end… I am starting to wonder why am I so afraid when I actually do everything every professional artist and my own art teachers say? Listening to them (you included) and even just observing their drawing process skyrocketed my art on a level I still can’t believe comes from me. And yet I am too scared to start posting until I have made sure twice that what I have done cannot be improved more (by me) Is that what they call an imposter syndrome?😅

I started a tarot deck project back during lockdown, but slowed down a lot when I went back to school over the last two years. This year I hope to pick it back up and try to get more cards done, but I'm feeling the urge to redraw a lot of my older cards since both my art and vision has grown.

totally agree with the project approach. having something u can always come back to and try out things you want to learn is very important to not burn out. for me personally I found active studying just doesn't work for me. doing studies all day long one after another is very boring and exhausting.i learn and have more fun just working on something and trying to apply things I want to learn right in it. even if its just fanart or something. fanart is great to try things out. even if that may not be the fastest way to learn i save time in not burning out lol

Respectfully, I dont believe we can blame the algorithm. The internet is a vast world that is accessible around the world. So we're competing with everyone, quite literally. Being persistent will help us get noticed, that and putting in the work. Don't lose hope, just keep pushing 😊
@TylerEdlin84
@TylerEdlin84 15 күн бұрын
Isolate the variable that may be the biggest issue, remember we can solely blame the algorithm here. Most of the time it’s either the art itself is not high quality or you’re not getting in front of the right people.

I agree that the algorithm in social media platforms has definitely had an impact on artists of varying skill levels. I’m an artist of 15 or so years and my work hardly receives any interactions. I agree that persistence can help, but in truth I think the key is to post on newer platforms, Cara is the newest? Still hard to be noticed even on there due to the high quantity of artists.

Milanote actually seems decent and worthwhile, ill have to check it out. Basically, from this video, I got that working on personal projects within a realistic scope is the key, and that these could be varied, from environements to characters or props, is this correct? Thanks a lot for the video, really good stuff.

I used Milanote throughout college, and I HIGHLY recommend it. It was so useful for organizing thoughts and notes and especially for compiling reference images from different sources. I can’t believe he got a Milanote sponsorship bc usually KZfaq sponsorships are kinda meh at best or outright scams at worst, but Milanote is genuinely useful in my experience. #notsponsored lol

My problem isnt starting projects, it's having too many! I want to illustrate 5 different books, two are my own, excluding a bestiary! Can you tell me how to manage that, or how to choose one project at a time?

I’m in a similar boat! I’ve 5 - 7 art projects lined up (comics among others) but I think it’s best to start on one project, see how the process is. Certain projects may have different needs, which translates into maybe spending more (or less!) time for research, practice, not including the extraneous tasks like marketing, social media management, and all that before literally anything else that has to be done in one’s daily life - both seen and unforeseen! I tend to be very hyper-focused on objectives, so time management is very crucial for me. Can’t even point out how often I forget to do the most simple thing like get a drink, or eat food. Try a small scale project first! Something that’ll be slightly less time consuming (I plan to do this by working on two short comic side-stories as a lead-in to bigger ones) and gives the express opportunity to experiment with things that may/may not work for the main projects! Godspeed in your artistic endeavors! I wish you all the best.

@@TylerEdlin84 I'll never stop creating for myself either. However, I enjoyed sharing with the world and having people be impressed with the result of my hard work (sounds egotistical but it's honnest). But now it's all diminished, the value placed on my work by the world, the amount of time I can dedicate to this interest, the authenticity of my own production isn't a given anymore, people will always second guess it. With the rise of AI, my goal and dream to work professionnally is slowly fading away. To me, art was a lifestyle, so I aimed to do it professionnally because quite frankly it's one of the only things I find fulfilling. Now I feel like continuing my projects wastes my time and I should just pursue something else although it breaks my heart. I've given up a lot to get to my goal but now, even the possibility of achieving it seems like it'll be extremely difficult if not impossible. I don't want to get dark or trauma dump but I've been feeling quite empty for months to the point where it's hard to pick up a pencil again. Sorry if that's too personal. I bet lots more feel like tho atm.

@@ED-pc2kq Artist's are fighting back. Look into nightshade if you haven't already. It is a way to poison data sets that AI trains on and it's also going to protect our own art from being stolen. AI is starting to fall in on itself as well as they are starting to train AI on itself ultimately it will inbreed itself into mush and it will look like one thing.
