How is your bunker game and what shots would you like me to break down next?

I’d love to get your advice on those 50ish yard shots into the green. My bunker game is erratic at best (who knew you could thin a 60 degree wedge 120 out of a bunker???) but playing medal mid week and going for it if I hit a bunker!!

All very well playing these shots from perfect lies in lovely sand. Conditions vary so much even from bunker to bunker at my place. Plugged lies, sand behind the ball, uphill, downhill, side hill, wet, fluffy, no sand under the ball. I would think it is the same for most in the UK.

I love more bunker tips as I love to experiment with different ideas as bunkers have always been tricky for me up until recently. Two other ideas to toss into the mix and see if you like / dislike. 1) If the sand is hard, don't open the face at all and treat it more like a normal chip (learned this one the hard way...... a LOT :). 2) I try to focus on how I want the shaft / my hands at impact for all of my shots these days. Something that's been working really well lately for me in bunkers is wanting the handle to be straight vertical at impact. This helps me over-come my normal shot tendency to get shaft lean on the ball like most other types of shot.

Good stuff Mark! As a 20 handicap, I’ve never really struggled out of bunkers. I play what feels like a standard 50 yard chip and move on. I find myself in a bunker maybe once a round, so I haven’t really put much time into it. Got to work on that approach play brah!

I prefer to open my stance due to flat swing. Twisting club for lofting is when I get in trouble. I also try to keep my sand splash no longer than a dollar bill. Great idea drawing the line in the sand Mark! That visual was excellent.

Great video Mark, love the tip re: lowering the handle to negate the shaft twist instead of changing aim point. Could you do a similar one for crap British bunkers though please? I have always been a blader of a bunker player. I get that extra 20-30 yard shot over the green. I have gotten a little better, but still fear it. Most instruction is for the person who leaves it in the bunker. I do like your thoughts on a squarer stance, and I’ve never thought about lie angles. I’m going to hit some shots before tomorrow’s round, if the practice bunker isn’t frozen! 🥶🥶

Great video. Where I play there is a bunker that I would say is particularly tight in that the sand is very compacted. I try to keep my speed up and hit an inch or 2 behind the ball but find the bounce hitting the sand and the leading edge blading the ball out of the bunker but well over the green because of the speed. It would be great if you could provide a tip about these types of lies in the bunkers. To add to the difficulty the lip is reasonably high in the bunker being played from with the compacted/hard sand. Thanks :)

Thx for the vlog Mark!! nice vid Mark...i agree, once you get the confidence to just take a normal pitch shot swing and hit 2in behind the ball, bunker shots are not so scary...I cringe when I see golfers stabbing at the sand and just digging their leading edge 4in into the sand because they are afraid to thin it
