I used to drive 60 miles each way and pay 60 bucks for one hour, twice a week. Just find 2 or three favorite teachers on KZfaq. Rock musicians never had it this good.

Truth. No one today has any excuse not to be playing at a much higher level because of people like Eric It's for EVERY instrument too, not just guitar. There's just too many good teachers here on youtube to count. Signals music studio, LoG sounds, Chris Sherland, Anyone Can Play Guitar, Guthrie Trapp, Rotem Siven, Jack Ruch, Ben Eunson, Chase Maddox, Brett Papa, Tina Jackel, Gracie Terzian, and of course Rick Beato are just a few of the excellent teachers here on YT. FOR FREE!!!

This is cool. I haven't intentionally learned horizontal patterns, but I started discovering what is basically the same thing through different means. Like you described, I felt constrained by only playing in one boxed pattern. So in my case to fix that I picked my favorite "home base" pattern, memorized an adjacent pattern, and then began exploring specifically how connect the two by chasing melodies in my head. And I've basically ended up in the same place as what you are teaching here. It's just cool to know there are multiple paths to get to the same place. :D

It’s funny how you can have brand new realizations with the same old stuff. It’s almost like seeing your wife of 20 years in a brand new dress, you fall in love with her all over again lol. You’re awesome man. Do you think there’s any Pentatonic or scalier awareness you can have when stuff is moving to the four chord? While, still using the staying out of the box Philosophy?

Thanks for the lesson. I enjoy your music and your joy of music. When doing the diagonals up or down, do you pretty much always finger the fretboard with fingers 1 and 3, pointer and ring? Or do you sometimes slip in the second finger like when going between the second and third strings? I slowed your video down to closely watch your preferred fingering and had a hard time seeing if you ever throw the second finger in. It seems to make a difference setting you up for the next notes up or down. Thanks for any advice!

The Pentatonic boxes are just specific shells or subsets of "safe" notes that you can visualize .. the bottom line is if you learn all the position patterns, how they are interconnected, and why those pentatonic boxes are what they are, you'll learn (hopefully) how everything is interconnected and free to delve out of "the box." In other words, if you learn keys not just by letter name, but also know interval relationships from string to string and up a single string, for the different keys, you're on your way, especially when you know the sound to expect for any given interval, double stop, or other harmony. My $0.02.
