This isn't about getting perfect color (by which most of us would mean accurate color) - it's about getting the color that you like. Big difference.

Agreed, I have seen tutorials where they show you how to adjust using the color picker tool for grays, blacks and whites.

Hi Aaron, for those who want to work with a JPG file (I don't), they can convert it to a TIFF file and work with it in Photoshop as well, right? That way they will not be dealing with a lossy format.

Nice tutorial but i think that you could show us how to adjust white balance with white balance tool from the camera raw menu! I know it's a little bit more "pro-ish" thing to do but it would be helpful to teach it as a technique.

I always prefer to adjust the balance using a threshold layer. 1. Apply the threshold layer and move the slider to the left until the very last part of the image is still white. Mark this point. 2. Move the slider in the other direction until the very last part of the image is still black. Mark this point. 3. Delete the adjustment layer and add a curves adjustment layer. 4. Use the curves white point and black point eyedroppers to click on your marked darkest and whitest points within you image and this will balance your colour for the whole image.

I have been really stuck up on the 'curves' method of correcting colours in Photoshop. Thank you for this alternate method, which seems to give even better control on colours.

Howzit Aaron, awesome one!! Tell me, why would you want to change the settings in the RAW window and not just opening the photo and edit the phone from the File/Edit/... menus inside of Photoshop? Damn, I hope my questions makes sense :)

to get accurate WB I always duplicate once everything is edited and merge into one layer, then invert > blur > Average > then soft light, hardlight or overlay. which ever looks best for you. I do interiors fopr properties and its never lets me down. (bare in mind it doesnt correct colour cast and i white balance and general adjustments in LR so the match as close as possible)

I only have CS5 (12.1) and it has Camera Raw and opens if it is DNG but once JPG is open there is no access to the filter that I know of other than to first open the jpg file as a camera raw file. Does anyone know how to get to the filter once the jpg file is already open?

Awesome, Aron! I'm from Brazil, and your way of speaking english is very good, I can understand everything. Aron, how about showing how to get that look in the movies? No, I'm not talking about the well-known teal & orange. I mean to be able to leave the image with all that way of cinema: the grains, the black, the dynamic contrste, the colors very alive. I could take as an example some recent movie, like the "Us" that does not have that teal and orange but has the classic aspect of cinema. Many thanks and congratulations!

This is how to find white balance in ACR. White balance in photoshop is to find gray in your photo then adjust then make RGB the same values using curves.

If you are serious about photography always bring your grey card or color checker.

Well depends on what you are capturing. For Landscape, a grey card is not needed. I have been using the ExpoDisk and it is tack on for setting exposure and in-camera custom WB. Vet simply especially with mirrorless cameras.
