Wow. The idea of focusing on one area per day is such an epiphany to me and resonates with me so much. I follow a lot of productivity content and have always thought that I have to be “consistent” in a sense that I have to make consistent progress in everything that matters to me everyday. And I have always failed and I would feel like a failure. Looking back, I made the most progress on days that my mind just immersed in one thing for the whole day. I’m also a grad student struggling to enjoy league without feeling guilty and this video is such a good wake up call for me. Thanks Petu!

allowing yourself to be bored is *really* good advice. i often like to just sit out on my deck in the sun and let my brain think, and that's when anything worth writing or remembering comes to me. not only that, but it's incredibly valuable time that can allow for deep introspection and improve your understanding of self. if you can enjoy nothing but the company of your thoughts, i think you will be the happiest, most understanding and most capable version of yourself

26:50 What you're talking about here is what they call in psychology context and state-dependent memory. Context dependent means; say for example you are studying new words for a language you are learning. Then the next day you have a test about these words. If you make the test in the same room or even a similar environment to the one you studied in then it's easier to retrieve what you learned when you studied. State dependent memory is the same, but instead of the context it's about the state. So for example if you consumed a lot of caffeine or if you were irritated or happy while studying. If you also drink coffee or are happy when making the test, you'll have an easier time remembering the stuff you learned.

based. I am also in CS and my gpa is 3.04/4 (B), 1. I sleep too much (partially cuz of depression) 2. I don't eat well (fast food) 3. I consume caffeine after 12 pm 4. I cut corners (context switching between courses, not fully reading the assignment, half assing the assignments) 5. I don't exercise regularly (go for runs every 2 weeks, walk everyday) my productivity will sky rocket if I : 1. figure out which direction I want to go towards 2. fix my poor habits 3. learn how to focus
@player_0706
@player_0706 Ай бұрын
It's better to take small steps to accomplish goals, so here are my recommendations, but you can do whatever you want: 1 Figuring out "the direction" could mean thinking about what will make you happy to do every day (or most days). If after a while you're not sure, allow yourself to try new things and fail. Failing is important because it's always better to learn from your mistakes as soon as possible. 2 Set precise tasks that you WILL or WILL NOT do tomorrow. For example, "I'll clean my room tomorrow." Setting yourself small but doable tasks is better than setting far and ambiguous goals like "I'll fix my poor habits." 3 What helps me the most when I don't want to do something because it's too boring or stressful is thinking about why I'm doing it. Finding purpose and sense in the things we do is key because then you'll stop fighting it, and you will do it because it MAKES SENSE. We're all here to improve so I hope you do well in life internet friend :D

This video is intended to maximize your potential in a domain. Working a 9-5 could be a good indicator that trying to reach challenger in league might not be the best for your actual situation. The idea is pretty close to "how to maximize productivity" and that includes knowing when to stop working. You can still play after a 9-5, but maybe a competitive, ranked game is not the best idea for the other aspects of your life. Maybe a casual game that don't take that much focus won't interfere with your schedule as much. (Not trying to lecture or anything, just sharing what i believe is a perspective aligned with this video) I see where you come from, since i have the same problem, and my approach will be to get my reps on. my competitive games on the weekend. I won't become better than people who can play 6 hrs a day, but i believe i will get more efficient results

Being a person that have a lot of troubles to focus on anything by his own decision (ADHD) I found your lifestyle very intriguing. I watch or hear your videos whilst I do many things, even programming or writing a paper. If I try to only be occupied in one context only, my brain finds the way to get lost on thoughts. Also, caffeine helps me to concentrate and even relaxes me a little bit. It is difficult to generalise when every person is so different. Nevertheless, thanks for the tips and keep doing whatever fits you, love every video you do!

As a fellow ADHDer be careful with the justifications... people with ADHD are more vulnerable to addiction than other groups so that's why caffeine might appeal to you. trying to attain a focused state of mind starts today. Try to do work without anything in the background. It changed my life when i broke down the myth that i had to have sth else so i could stay focused. I realised the truth is. I can just be focused and space out for a minute or two sometimes and focus again i just hated the spacing out/ "boredom" so much i made justifications for myself.

ChatGPT. Also if you are using ChatGPT to read research papers, make sure to either input the abstract at the very end or don't include the abstract all together, and then have it summarize it for you. My favorite is to use a combination of different free services, as I find Microsoft Copilot GPT 4 is strong in searching on the web, but ChatGPT is generally stronger at everything else. Here's one example what I might do: 1. I use ChatGPT to read the initial paper, then have it generate a summary. 2. I prompt ChatGPT to provide a list of questions that might help me learn it better. 3. I prompt Microsoft Copilot with those questions. 4. I then take Microsoft Copilot's responses and ask ChatGPT to interweave the answers whenever the technical keyword or concept comes in. 5. I start chugging information not alcohol. Hope this can help a bit.

Great vid here Petu, really solid advice, I myself struggled with academics all the way through my school years, until i hit university. Once there i had a different midset of work, and applied a almost regimented reigeme to my studies, 2 hours every day, minimum of intense study, alone, regardless of time or if i had already had classes that day, it was simply a necessity to me. And looking back on that i feel that that one decision was the only thing that kept me ahead of the curve, as that when my classmates and I had had a 4 hour lab session, they would call it quits then and there, but i persisted, and i felt much better for it mentally. One thing i do agree on is your priority of sleep etc, however i will say that as time goes on and for example I have gotten more and more responsibilties, such as working 8-5 every day, traveling 6 hours once a month to go to the office, you cannot control them all. For example if i was to not play games past 6pm, i simply wouldnt be able to play anyhting until the weekends, and that for me would be detrimental to myself, as i would be forcing myself to not be able to do the things i like (if that makes sense). Allowing yourself to be bored is also a good one, as i then tend to lean into something like a book, as appose to doom scrolling on a mind numbing app like YT shorts and Twitter. Thanks for the upload!

Excellent teachings and inspiration of realizing and understanding self-discipline! Especially in the era where we are more free to do, and one can personally notice the benefits in "doing less", "focusing on one thing at a time", "allowing ourselves times of boredom", and "finding moments of doing some activities alone". Essentially gaining more from your life - not meaning the possibility to achieve more or climb higher as they are byproducts - but focusing on basics/fundamentals and not skipping them. Living your life in a more meaningful way. As a second thing, it is wonderful to realize other young people who have grasped some fragment of wisdom and are now sharing that. Some of your advice was new to me, and makes me now consider the importance of it and how can I adapt the teaching into my own life. Thank you for the reminders. Thank you for inspiring! You being you is awesome!

This is very good advice. I would also recommend picking up what I call a "for fun hobby". Something that you enjoy, can improve in, and also don't care much about beyond enjoying it. What it does is : creates a space where you're safe to make low stakes mistakes without any fear of repercussions, which helps winding down all the built in pressure for constantly working on important goals without giving in to the impulse to do inefficient stuff like watching KZfaq shorts and the like. For example whenever I'm not working I like to cook. I don't want to be a cook, but I enjoy the process of cooking and learning new recipes, which means that I'm still focused on my task whenever I'm cooking but there's no pressure to succeed and no fear of failing.

i basically failed my physics bachelor at eth bc of league and am stuck in it now. i came in a downward spiral and strugge to break it. i think i thought of every point you made before beside the "focus days" and at some point applied them in my life. now i dont know how to get back to it. if everything is established maintaining it is different (not easier) than building these habits. also its hard for me to find goals and commit to somethig. thanks for the video it gave me motivation when im at a deep low. im on it to become a pilot and wish to find the way of achiving this goal. i think the topic of the video is very important to be talked about the way you did (maybe bc i agree and came to almost identical solutions)

Same, brother. No degree, no (quality) job, 25 and little prospects. Did very poorly in school growing up (ADD and troubled home life) so getting back on the saddle has been hard. I also came to a lot of these conclusions -- for me, I've just been starting at the smallest, easiest things, and slowly acclimating, then moving on to the next. Personally speaking, working out is very important, and it was the simplest improvement to my life that I made that took the least effort. Physical activity has done more for my mental health and productivity than any psychological session I've ever had. Whenever I backslide, I can always feel the 'velocity' of the downward spiral ten times harder when I miss multiple workouts. In the end, change is something you have to slowly, gradually work at. It's difficult to do it all at once, so start by trying to break it down into manageable chunks. Instead of comparing yourself to other people, take stock of where you were last month, and where you are now. Did you improve, or backslide? If you are doing worse, what happened, and was it something you could have avoided? If you're doing better, you're one step closer to digging yourself out of the trench you're in. At least, that's what I'm doing. Someday, we'll make it.

Starting college very soon, on my senior year in highschool and its the last month, this year has been great for me academically, getting a hard sleep schedule to follow is the best thing anyone can do ever. I have never had so much energy before, I'm able to do much more in school, with friends, and in games too. I went from a straight D student to a straight A student with just a strict schedule that I follow. And sure, that is less times with hobbys and friends, but that is more time being happy, being able to do things at my full potential. Sleep is genuinely THE most important thing to get and still, somehow, people dont realize that. Also petu I love your content man, this video actually is very good advice. Best ive heard ever. (except maybe 6pm one cause some people relax with video games too, but I know youre talking about league not stardew valley)

This is a great video with a number of points that I could not agree more on. I am in a very similar situation and many of the same things you do are what have worked for me as well. The way you suggested using chat AI for a conversational way of topic testing is very interesting and definitely something I am going to try experimenting with. I have found a lot of success with using polyphasic sleep cycles in order to be able to context switch during the day, which is something I have found allows me to give my tasks the proper dedicated attention without needing to dedicate a whole day to the same thing, which I have found in the past burns me out rather quickly, and so polyphasic sleep is something I can also recommend experimenting with for anyone who might be having the same issue.
