How to Get Photorealistic Depth of Field with Nuke's Bokeh Node with

In this tutorial, VFX Artist Alfie Vaughan guides you through different methods for adding depth of field to a shot by defocusing the background, midground and foreground at various degrees with several of Nuke's defocus nodes. He also demonstrates how the Bokeh node is Nuke's most powerful defocus tool, giving you maximum control over the blur pattern to suggest different lenses and focal depths. Use this tool to really add photorealism to your shots.
Note that Alfie is using a plug-in called Channel Hotbox, which is a python script from Nukepedia for quickly switching between channels. You can easily do that without the plug-in using the dropdown at the top of the Viewer.

Defocus, Convolve, Zdefocus and Bokeh look the same to me. Defocus is the fastets of them so it's the clear winner for me

Built in blender renderers (eevie, cycles) have Z depth pass. In this example edge issues on bokeh looks like the result of using mist as Depth. Mainly because mist pass is interpolated. Flare node can be used to create single frame bokeh images if you do not have access to a bokeh kernel lib. Bokeh is a great addition to default toolset though.

Yes I'm using the mist pass here. Until quite recently the proper depth pass from Blender didn't work properly and the mist was a better option even though it's anti-aliased. I'm old school!
@thornnorton5953

Two questions: Why use the mist channel instead of the depth channel, which is more beneficial for depth of field? Blender has a suitable depth pass that outputs measurably correct data. Also, Why use glow only on the explosion instead of the entire render? Is it a substitute for volumetric haze or camera glow? Just curious about your thought process. Thanks!"

The mist pass is anti-aliased whereas the depth pass has no anti-aliasing. And as for the glow, I just comped this very quickly in this video. I have a livestream on my channel where I comped it properly with lightwrap and stuff if you want to see the actual comp.

Well the depth pass shouldn't be anti aliased btw, it will give you false value

Any way to fix dodgy edge pixels in a depth pass when it's multi-layered? As in, not just a single element on black, but a full scene?
@AlfieVaughan
@AlfieVaughan Жыл бұрын
It's much harder. You can sometimes blur the depth pass a bit to soften the effect. Also try eroding. But it's much more difficult to fix it when the elements are on top of other parts of the scene!

TLDW: if you don't edge extend your "mist" channel (depth channel in the new Bokeh node), the edges will not be correct.

Mine's just a pack that someone I used to work with sent me. If you just google free Bokeh pack you should be able to find them. There's also some gizmos online that generate procedural kernels and you can adapt them with sliders etc!

I do respect Alfie Vaughan's works, but here there are a lot of misconceptions, starting from the use of a clamp node to the use of mist pass from blender that is not a depth pass but kind of (cannot be unfiltered). Looks like a video made in a hurry.
@AlfieVaughan
@AlfieVaughan Жыл бұрын
Normally with CG when I do any grading I use a copy and premult setup with a grade node that has black clamp enabled which fixes any negative values. I didn't do it in this case as I wasn't focusing on colours so I just used a clamp. But it has the same effect. I don't really see what your issue is with that approach? I set the max value to 100 which was way above any values in the render so I'm not actually clamping anything in terms of range other than what was below 0 and causing issues. If this was a serious comp I wouldn't have clamped it at the end on top of the whole thing but this was just a demo. As for the depth pass, I've had very mixed results using the proper depth pass. I've been using the mist pass instead for a few years and have never had any problems with it. The values are different but the fact the mist pass is anti-aliased seems to work better a lot of the time. Just my personal opinion though. As this video is about Bokeh and not specifically using renders from Blender I don't think it's really an issue...

@@AlfieVaughan You certainly know what you are doing, but the video is probably too short for a novice artist and lacks the explanations you have given here. A tad too much advertising in general. But that's just a personal opinion.

@@AlfieVaughan blender’s lack of implementation in deep exrs is really a pain in the ass for this type of defocusing. Given the options between mist, depth, and eevee depth, i also find that cycles mist works the best for defocusing, with a heavy amount of cleanup.

@@changleon7441 I hope they introduce deep soon but I can't see it happening. It would be catering towards very high end VFX which I don't think they're that interested in. We're getting some good stuff with lightgroups etc recently but I think deep is a long way off in Blender sadly. Glad to hear someone else has a similar experience with the mist pass. A lot of people in my Discord server said the same thing after this video was released!
