back in the day, when i was younger, when i found a ant hill, i use to get my little army figures out along with with fire crackers and m-80's and blow them up, after my dad gave me enough time to have my fun he would come out with the lighter fluid to burn what was left over ... good old days ... there were never enough ant hills around for me and my dad to have our fun with ...

We had ants at our house. Tried Raid and ant baits, but none worked. Read you could mix Borax with jam/jelly to get rid of them. I didn't have any jam/jelly available, so I used honey and mixed it with the Borax. Then I smeared some on a plastic lid and attached it to the outside of the house where the ant trail was. Within in a few weeks, no more ants!

You can also add peanut butter to the jelly and borax. House Ants are basically looking for 3 things when they come inside our houses: water, sugar, and protein. So, eliminating water sources, and providing a peanut butter and jelly mixture with borax should take of the whole colony!

3 tbsp. Boric Acid and 1 tbsp. of Sugar mixed and get moist with water and pour it into a sponge or on a piece of cotton placed inside of a small jar lid. The ants not only get sick from the poison, they are attracted by the taste. Boric acid mixed with peanut butter, also makes excellent roach and ant bait. Once they eat the boric acid and go back into the nest ,they die and the other ants eat the dead ants and they die.

I put dishwashing soap into a bucket(1oz per gallon) and add water, I then pour it on the colony and the surrounding area. I also have a spray bottle of the soapy water and spray ant trails around the house. It's non-toxic and very effective, they suffocate in the soapy water.

If you want to kill a colony of ants use both liquid surgar items with borax and solid sugar items with borax best i have found if you know where the colonies is to use is maple syrup and borax solution 3 parts maple 1 part borax near the ant hill and powdered sugar for the solid bait mixed with borax same ratio. In about 72 hours the colonie will be gone and if its the only colonie no more ant. The reason u need both solid and liquid form is the liquid form is only eaten by the adult stage ants, whereas the solid is brought back to the larva and they eat it and turn it into a liquid for the workers and queen so doing both near a hill will eradicate all of them at the same time. I hope this was an insight on how to deal with ant colonies.

Soak 1 cotton ball at a time and squeeze lightly. Place cotton balls where you've seen ants. Remove cotton balls 24 hours later.You can store your unused mixture in a jar with a top for later use! I use the chicken method. I let the chickens in the garden as soon as the snow melts off it, until I plant. They eat all the bugs, fertilize and roto-till. If I notice any ant activity during growing season, I've set my garden up for easy fencing, to block the chickens out where I don't want them and let them in between rows. When garden season ends I put the chickens in the garden until the ground freezes, it snows or of course too cold out for them. This has greatly reduced bug problems, good for the chickens and cuts down on chicken feed so I do not use commercial fertilizer, they make it.

I had an infestation of fire ants in a container where I had a pomegranate tree. I had tried other methods like grits that didn't work, but just made the ant relocate one of their doors into the nest. Then I read about cayenne pepper powder, so I tried it by placing the container up on a box and lining the container with a thin line of cayenne powder all around the container. Later that day I checked it and the ants were just going to and fro walking through the pepper making a path back to the ground. I assumed it wasn't working since they seemed to have no problem walking through it. However, the next day, there was not a single ant left in the container. End of infestation.

Hi'' Your post got me thinking!! About, since you have used the Boiling water on ants. My Dad has Cutter Ants ( Terrible things to try and eradicate ) Anyways on a Wasp nest we use Boiling water with dish soap , about 4-6 drops then stir and throw on the nest and they drop dead ( NO fling ) but warm-cold water works just as good! My idea you made me think of is Boiling water/soap on Cutter Ants since these ants are highly resistant to pesticides. The dish soap in water suffocates the wasp sooo Hoping this will work else where..? Thanks for your post. "HAPPY NEW YEARS" !!!!

Just tried out the boiling water method and it's a very cold day, it seems to be working very effectively most of the ants that were deep underground came to the top and that made them easy to kill. You might and probably will have to pour boiling water on them 2 or 3 times to really mess them up. Thanks for the help!

I just sprinkle corn grits around any ant mounds (make sure they're the Quaker GMO type for the added poisons--lol). It takes a day or two but it does work. You can watch the ants carrying off the grits to their base. Eventually all of the grits will be gone. The grits swell in their stomachs because they get wet in there, and the ants die. The same supposedly happens if you use cornstarch. I've only used grits on outdoor ants, but I am in the process of trying starch for a recent problem indoors since these ants are so small that I'm afraid the grits will be too big for them. I've set both out, just in case. I used DE when the problem first materialized and it did a good job at making a barrier for a while, but then they found ways around it and are just showing up in different places of my house.

TheCrunchyHousewife You're welcome, and thanks. :) Just an update....I didn't have any luck with the starch. It was too fine and only succeeded in making a big mess on my counter. I think the grits are too big for these particular ants, but I did sprinkle them back in the wall where I think the nest was. I've had a large reduction by doing that plus setting out cottonballs soaked in sugar water with borax. I still see a few each day coming out of the over-flow hole in my bathroom sink so I think I'll have to switch tactics once more to make sure the queen is gone. They caught on to the sugar syrup and are starting to avoid it. The problem is that they are in a wall between my kitchen and bathroom and I can only get to a very small section of that. I'm about to try those Terro ant baits to see if they're more appealing than my homemade bait. It's borax-based, too, but they might have a better recipe than mine. I think the one I used has a little too much borax.

freedom dove Grits "DO NOT" kill fire ants. WHY not ? Because adult ants do not eat solid food. The worker ants transport food back to the colony to feed the larvae not the queen. Once the larvae has consumed the solid matter, the adult ants eat the regurgitated liquid from the larvae. Hope this helps to debunk that myth. ☺

Dont put it in the house,, put it a the source of the trail going in an old water bottle ,,,mix it up inside,,lay it on its side & poke a few holes in the part that's empty,, lay it down at the source ,,, them will find it & they do get rid of em,,, but they end up having queens escape when they know they've been duped,, It takes pretty much a week. Get them with a good spray of Vinegar, salt & a tad of dish liquid,,,,, I mix 1gal of vinegar, 1 cup salt , 1 tablespoon of dish liquid 😘👍

Ants outside are driving me bats this year. I'm going to try the cornmeal. Another youtuber used oatmeal too and that worked for him. Many years ago ants decided to invade my kitchen so I put out a jar cap with some thick fruit preserves. I only had to do this a couple times and that was enough to discourage them from coming back believe or not. What they did was walk in like we would get into a pool of water. They got stuck and that was that. That solved my kitchen problem.

+Kim Medley Probably too much borax/boric acid in the mix. I'm in Florida too, and the ants are tiny. I've used Terro and made my own Terro-like stuff and they both attract ants and get rid of them--mostly. My homemade "Terro" attracted hundreds of ants to my kitchen counter and then they all disappeared! Some came back and started avoiding the Terro like they knew it was poison. Bait traps also worked pretty well. I still have some ants and they're in my bed! What's the attraction to perfectly clean sheets?

Ants cannot be killed so easily. Prepackaged bait stations usually contain 5.4% borate. They are less effective at managing major infestations, because foragers are killed before they can bring the bait back to the colony. Liquid borate products with a lower percentage of active ingredient (0.5 to 1.0% concentration in a sugar-water solution) will have more impact on the colony, although it may take several days to a week to see results and they need to be used in larger, refillable bait stations. Products with the lower concentration of borates (e.g., Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait) are registered for home use but are difficult to find in stores and may have to be ordered online.

# Luigi D'Alessandro - Borax is a compound of the mineral Boron. It was commonly used when I was a child and was available from the 'corner shop' or local chemist but has been overtaken by more modern household cleansers. I thought it was still on sale in supermarkets, but today I only found it for sale online. The ones I found were all in UK, in sterling currency. If you Google it, you should find suppliers in your area.

I had black ants at the bottom of a tree in my front yard. Just after I had another tree die due to ant infestation. I tried hot water, it didn't work. So I poured a large dose of seven dust on top a couple months later I remember the ants there so I look and they were all gone. Later that same year I had yellow jackets in the ground in 3 different places in the back a quick shake of seven dust and a brick to keep them in and no more problems.

1/4 cup of cheap dish soap, 1/2 cup borax dump in a bucket filled with warm water.Strain it and put in a 2 gal sprayer. Pump it up and kill the ants. If ants look like they are enjoying a shower double the borax.

If you dissolve the borax in 2 cups of boiling water you won't have to strain anything. :o)

In South Africa, our Borax does not look like that (not a box), however a green bottle, with a cap, (identical to the bottles of Epson Salt, etc). And it costs less than R6 per bottle. I have mixed our "bread Syrup" which you use for the kid's sandwiches, syrup and peanut butter. I mixes syrup and borax, only today, will keep you updated on how it goes. I can however confirm with our infestation of black household ants, borax and sugar does not work at all. It seems the borax is too easily smelled? It's possible? With the syrup, the borax's smell, is gone.... Try it.

The one I hear is Boric acid and sugar. But the correct blend is needed too much boric and the ants wont eat it. There are several different recipes online .,, something like 1tsp BA 1/2 cup sugar and enough water to dissolve the sugar to make a slurry for the ants,, Im not exactly sure of the best combo. I did this once and it worked but have forgotten the exact proportions.

When using the boiling water method, it is best to poke a stick down into the nest so the boiling water fills the whole nest!
@Rattlerjake1
@Rattlerjake1 2 жыл бұрын
@Wildlife warrior - Well if you knew anything about how ants build their "nest", many of the tunnels travel laterally for a foot or two, and then turn upwards into a chamber; they do this because when it rains the water will not flood the food and nursery chambers. Water travels Down when poured on the nest, not laterally or upwards. You can easily see this when you look at castings made when molten metal is poured into a nest. Metal will travel only where the tunnels are because it is a molten SOLID (not absorbed by the soil), whereas water will soak through the soil and go strait down. But if you run a stick down the center of the hill and pour the water quickly, the water will back up because it cannot absorb fast enough and will travel laterally a little bit more.
@Rattlerjake1
@Rattlerjake1 2 жыл бұрын
@Wildlife warrior - Sure they can, if they are well established, which can take several months to a year. But the majority of homeowners don't let them get that established. An average fire ant nest in a yard is seldom more than 2-3 feet deep.

There is a mechanical method that works, except for sister mounds. All you need is a shovel and a bucket and two (2) unrelated mounds). Take a shovel full of mound one and place in bucket. Grab bucket and shovel, go to mound two, dig out shovel full of mound two, set aside. Dump bucket of ants 1 into mound two. Dump shovel 2 of ants into bucket, return to mound 1 and dump ants 2 in. Watch the bloodsport. It helps to tap the bucket on the ground to keep ants in. There should be a pile of dead ants outside each mound. Repeat as needed. If no dead ants, try mound 3.

Borax is NOT dangerous to pets or children. I believe you're referring to boric acid - which is a complete different substance than Borax. Boric acid (dangerous to pets and children), Borax is totally safe. :) Love these ideas btw

Just sealed-up the crack where the ants were entering from.....now there are a bunch of ants mingling near that area, standing around, looking confused. It's just like the scene from The Matrix, where NEO beats the crap out of the multiple Agent Smiths, then flies away......all of the Agent Smiths look totally embarrassed and confused about what to do....then they slink away!
