Bed bugs are one of the biggest nuisances in the home. While they’re not considered dangerous, their bites can be painful and itchy, and they do carry some possible health risks.
Bed bugs are human parasites, which means that while we continue to live, bed bugs will also live alongside us. This is probably why they aren’t known to carry human diseases - it wouldn’t be in their best interest for us to disappear, after all!
The biggest annoyance that comes from bed bugs is the incessant itching that’s often caused by their bites. If you’re bitten by a bed bug, you’ll probably experience red bumps or welts on your skin a few days after the insect has struck. Sometimes, your reaction to the bite might even take up to a week or two, and some lucky people don’t experience any bumps or itching on their skin at all.
Bed bugs are tiny, and you usually won’t be able to see them by eye unless you’re looking really closely for them. So, how do you know if you’ve been bitten by the pesky insects? Check out your mattress, pillows and bedsheets, and look out for blood stains, eggshells, or shed bed bug skin.
You can also take a look at your bites. They should look a little like mosquito bites, but they tend to stay on your skin for much longer, often two weeks or more. The bites are often so itchy that you won’t be able to stop scratching them - and that’s where the potential for infection comes in.
The only way to stop yourself from being bitten is to get rid of the problem at its source. You’ll need to fully eliminate bed bugs from your home to prevent the risk of reproduction leading to a repeat infestation. To do this, you could douse your home with chemical products - but not everyone will prefer to take such drastic measures.
If you’re looking for DIY methods to get rid of bed bugs from your home, here are some of the quickest, easiest and most effective methods:
1. Washing clothes and bedding in hot water
Experts say that a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius will kill all stages of a bed bug's lifecycle. It’s a good idea to maintain this heat for at least 20 minutes, preferably an hour. Washing your clothes or bedding in hot water should be enough to kill them, but if you want even more reassurance, spinning them in a hot dryer will definitely kill them.
If you don’t have access to a washing machine or a dryer, you can still kill the critters by stuffing your bug infested clothes or bedding in a bin bag, sealing it and putting it out in the sun on a hot day. As long as the inside of the bag reaches 50 degrees Celsius and stays that way for 20 minutes, you’ll effectively kill the bugs in question.
2. Freezing bug-infested clothing and bedding
Just as bed bugs hate high heat, they hate freezing temperatures too. Items like shoes, clothes, jewellery, books and toys can all safely be stored in a freezer for several hours or overnight to kill the bugs, by causing ice to form in their insides. You’ll just need enough space inside your freezer, and it needs to be at a temperature of minus eighteen degrees Celsius or below. Put the items into plastic bags and leave them for at least two hours.
In this case, putting your belongings in a plastic bag and leaving them outside in cold temperatures won’t be enough. The colder the temperature, the quickly and more effectively a bed bug will be killed. Unless you live in the Antarctic, it’s unlikely that your outdoor temperatures will fall low enough to kill a bed bug by freezing. Even the smallest bed bugs can survive in temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius.
3. Apply silica gel to your carpets
Even when you successfully remove bed bugs from your furniture and other items, they may still be hiding in your carpets. Once you’ve cleaned the rest of your home, you’ll need to give your carpet a deep clean to ensure there are no more lingering bugs. First, you can use double sided tape to trap the bugs. Apply it around the outsides of your carpet, where bed bugs may crawl when they’re trying to avoid being too noticeable. Focus especially on areas of carpet near cracks or holes in your walls.
Next, spread some DIY bed bug powder onto your carpets. Silica gel - aka the stuff that comes in a little packet with some dried food products - is a particularly effective formula against bed bugs. This gel sucks moisture from the air, and its particles are sharp, which scratches at the water-conserving coating of the bed bugs. These two factors can work to dehydrate a bed bug, eventually killing it. Vacuum your flooring frequently and reapply the silica gel when necessary.
4. Vacuum your entire home
On the note of vacuuming, you should make sure to thoroughly vacuum your entire home, which will go some way to helping you remove bed bugs from the finickier locations.

i put 4 bed bugs into a pill bottle and left them in the freezer for 3 days. Took them out of the freezer and within 20 minutes they were crawling around again. good lord there are so many errors in this video it's just sad. Whoever made this did little to no research what-so-ever. Bedbugs, when threatened with extreme cold and lack of food will simply hibernate and wait for something that could be food to come near. These critters go EVERYWHERE and they are actually startlingly fast. Even if you put bowls around the legs of your bed, they'll just climb the wall and jump or drop from the ceiling. If you want to locate where they're hiding other than just randomly checking places, the only way to track them is after they've bitten you and they'll leave a trail of spots. The only thing in this video that is even remotely close to being useful is steam cleaning. I don't know why they fail to mention how useful certain plant leafs are. The leafs actually have hairs that impale the feet and most of the time will trap them in place. The adults are the least of the problem, the babies and eggs are the biggest problem because they are tiny. Bedbugs can sense heat and CO2 but they can only sense it from a couple of feet. They'll burrow into the darkest deepest places they can. Once they've molted, i think, 5-6 times, they'll be old enough to mate and reproduce. Once a female has mated, she can continue to produce eggs until she runs out of.... the male component... at which point she'll need to mate again. eggs are very very tiny and babies are practically translucent until they've fed for the first time. Interesting fact: Males impale the females to impregnate them and there's actually a slight chance it will just kill them. Males will also attempt to mate with babies that aren't yet mature enough to mate, but they immature ones will release a pheramone to deter males from attempting to mate with them. The best tactics for getting rid of them is to restrict their ability to move around the house using double sided tape on doorways(floor, walls, and ceiling). I would put the most work into the room you sleep in first after taping the doors to prevent them from feeding and multiplying because they can only grow and multiply by feeding. Work on the other rooms as well, but your sleeping space should be the highest priority. Last but not least.... Make sure they're gone before you celebrate. Babies don't require the care or attention of adults in order to re-infest a home. You won't know they're gone until you stop finding them for several weeks because of the amount of time it takes for their life cycles to complete. They can live for 10 months and can produce several hundred offspring each.

When the bed is dismantled, if it is wood, repaint it, making sure the paint goes into all the cracks and slots. When it has dried and put together, wrap double sided tape around the legs. Place the legs in metal dog bowls, place some diatomaceous earth in the bowls, after wrapping the outside of the bowls with masking tape so they can crawl up and slide into the bowls. If the bed is metal, I would still try to paint it, and instead of DE in the bowls you could put some kind of oil in the bowl, likely a vegetable oil, I don't think they can swim in it.

Bed Bug Removal I started to notice some bites in January of this year but new nothing about killing bed bugs. To prepare I watched video after video showing the different methods of removing them. I could not afford a professional service so I did this. I waited until we had a forecast high of 115F or 45C. I did this so the bugs could not go deep into the walls and survive. With the outside temperature hot enough to kill them on its own, I blasted the heat and fans inside. I held between 122 and 126 for almost 8 hours in my trailer using the excessive temperature to kill. I used heat from three 1500 watt baseboard heaters. Then instead of renting big fans at about $40.00 per day I bought a 20 inch or 50 cm box fan from Canadian Tire for the same price to add to the 5 household fans I already own. If your area is larger buy more fans. I had plans to buy three box fans but they were sold out because of our heat wave. For me this was OK because I have a floor standing air conditioner and used the fan to compensate. With a combination of laundering and heat drying all fabrics, including all bedding and clothes, then heating my place up to a sufficient temperature, I am now bug free. People remember heat treatments work best at the hottest part of the year when bugs can not find holes in the vapor barrier and crawl near the outer wall to stay safe, because the outside temperatures are too hot for that option. In winter heat will not work for this reason, but during hot days it is pretty much a sure kill, if you have enough heat and fans. Hope this helps some of you as well as it did me. My total cost for laundry, fans and power, was about $190.00 and I now own all the fans. The heaters I already owned. If you need to buy them this of course this will up costs. To give you an idea my trailer is my holiday trailer and the floor area is 200 sq. ft. Scale your equipment up as needed. If it happens again I am now prepared in full .

I had bed bugs in my car somehow. I bought an 8$ can of bed bug spray from walmart and just spent the entire can (took about 15 minutes) spraying the seats and floors until everything and every surface was slightly moist. I left the windows open to let the car air out overnight (the chemicals that kill bed bugs are not overly toxic to humans. They can kill cats easily so be careful and wash your hands after using to save the cat.) It worked. The secret is to be thorough and not miss any hiding spots, which you probably will. But the spray can is much easier and cheaper than anything this video suggests. It is not deadly to people, but will kill cats, fleas, and bed bugs. If you have bed bugs than you know 8$ is nothing to get rid of these hell creatures. You just need to spend the time getting all surfaces, cracks, and hiding spots.

That’s always where they will be. It is suggestible to either get them out of all those cracks and then call them so they can’t hide in there anymore, or get rid of the headboard entirely. Isolate the bed, which includes moving it away from the wall so they can’t get onto it. Lay down diatomaceous earth or cimexa in your baseboards and anywhere not just in the bedroom but the house, that they could hide.

I have them as I’m writing this. They bight me and it feels like a wasp sting and on top of that I have shadow pains afterward every 15-20 mins or so. I have a B12 deficiency which can affect nerves so that might be why. This is day 5 after the first chemical treatment and the bugs got worse. Exterminator says that’s normal. He said he couldn’t spray surfaces so he sprayed the perimeter of the rooms, about 12 inches out. Personally, I think this is going to be a big fail taking weeks and weeks! I honestly don’t know if I’ll survive this! I’ve got everything in bags in a small apartment so it’s almost impossible to vacuum thoroughly but I try frequently. They are still laying eggs like crazy . A lot on my computer chair as that is the only place I have to sit. I’ve tried the tea tree oil, full strength directly on my skin, everywhere! It definitely didn’t work as a repellent and if it kills them, it’s not fast enough! The bed is totally infested, I’ve slept about 16 hours in 5 days, no exaggeration! I’m at my wits end and praying to survive these evil little buggers. I’m pretty sure they will be one of the torments of purgatory!

@@lonewolf277 , so sad for your situation as well. Hate to see this happening especially knowing how bad and unsettling it can be. It really takes a toll on your mental and emotional health. I hope your building manager has done something for you to exterminate them. It is their responsibility. You shouldn’t have to pay anything out of pocket at all! I know the isolation is hard, I missed Christmas and New Year’s Day, (which is his birthday) , with my son. I think the most important thing when bed bugs take up residence in your home is to catch them early, before they lay eggs. There were a ton of them in my sofa. Praise God they were found before they hatched! Do you have any idea where they are hiding? If you do, you can buy some Diatomaceous Earth, which is a powder you dust around where they hide or travel and when they walk through it, it cuts their exoskeleton and they dehydrate and die, also spreading to other bed bugs. This stuff is really cheap and lasts a long time as you apply very lightly but it’s important to catch the infestation early. I’m so sorry. I wish I could be of more help to you. If your landlord does not look after you, I would consider reporting him to your landlords and tenants organization, whatever they may be called. It’s his responsibility to make sure this gets done ASAP. May God bless you and see you through this and may he provide for all your needs and keep you safe! 🙏🏻💗

Bed bugs migrate through apartment walls, electric, heating, air conditioning, plumbing connections, door, windows. It's difficult, but not impossible to keep them out of your home while living in an infested building. Start by applying a thin barricade of FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH, which kills bed bugs after they walk on it. It lasts for years when it is undisturbed and stays dry. Another residual is Crossfire insecticide, available online. The wet spray kills the bugs fast, then the dry residue kills them at a slower rate for 30 days after they walk on it. It can be sprayed on mattresses. It's available in a liquid concentrate which has to be mixed with water and used in one day, and also spray cans, which can be sprayed in small amounts again in another 30 days or later. Applying the diatomaceous earth OR this safe insecticide can help to kill any bed bugs that migrate into your unit. Consider using the FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH to kill all your bed bugs the way I described in a previous post. After you get rid of the bed bugs in your apartment, you might want to try taking GARLIC capsules daily to keep bed bugs away from your body wherever you go. They might avoid you and your home, and leave to find someone else to bite.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nK52maWlr7LDY4k.html

HEAT KILLS THEM ALL! eggs too 140 degrees (actually less but I tend to overkill) for 10 minutes or more. Hope my exterminator friend doesn't mind me sharing his methods. Good news: It is NOT necessary to treat the whole house! Remove items that may be damaged from high heat from rooms to be treated (usually just bedrooms but the rooms you spend the most time in) Q. Why? A. bb do not wander around nor travel they just eat procreate & sleep They sleep next to their food supply= usually the beds they follow CO2 to their dinner Good news #2. With exreme temperatures bb hibernate! So they never even wake up they just die! One of the biggest reasons NOT to use chemicals to kill bb is they wake up & run everywhere trying to escape (THEN they'll be everywhere & harder to kill) Worst of all the pesticides ARE POISON & detrimental to anyone's health. I helped an elderly friend have her home treated. Her family was extremely sceptical even angry with me bc i discouraged the use of toxins to battle her bb situation (but 1) a motel manager had confided in me they had been battling bb for TWO YEARS with pesticides and were not even close to winning the war! 2) both she & her beloved pet were very sick & elderly so of course I did my very utmost to rescue them from the never-ending pesticide battle option) We 1 room a day. We treated only the 3 bedrooms (though my friend requested treating the WHOLE HOUSE!) The kind Gentleman was very patient with us...all our fears...doubts...questions he answered them all. After the treatment he placed out bb traps to show us they were really & truly gone. They were. It's been over a year. Yay. No bb. I know She's Happy!

@@delip9303 I'm so sorry! My grandfather told me how he and his wife had to sleep on the dining room table because bedbugs had taken over their place! It was my mom that advocated for the 91% alcohol because she got them when a friend asked her to hold some of his clothes. (I got roaches from borrowing a friend's portable cd player!) She immediately sprayed every surface with the alcohol! But with them being everywhere in your home I don't think you should try self help advice. This feels like a professional job.

However you decide to deal with them just remember it's a long battle. Also, don't miss one area no matter how tiny or one item whether it's a rug or a stuffed toy because that's how you can reinfect your home.

@@delip9303 I've been reading the comments on here. One about the Raid that works on them. Another about how difficult eradication is because it seems like the most you can hope for is reducing the numbers. I think someone else said about a special cover for the mattress. I think a lot of little things have to be tried. One thing you can't do is slow down or stop because they never seem to! I'm having a similar battle with roaches. I'm trying everything and the apartment complex has a professional! But as long as my neighbors don't mind providing poison free room and board they'll always be here! And alcohol definitely doesn't work on these roaches! I've got glue boards, boric acid, hair spray and oil sheen (suffocating them) and bait. I'm only keeping the numbers down! Certainly not taking them out completely cause they won't stop making more!
