Put baking soda, then white vinegar down your drains, when the foaming is over, pour boiling water down the drain. Do this for all your drains. It's the only way to keep them from coming back.

When I bring home fruit I put it into the fridge. Bananas? I keep them on the counter top, wrapped in a thin cotton dish towel (tea towel to us older gals) and that keeps bugs from being a problem. I keep the bananas on the cabinet because all the ones available are green. They won't ripen in the fridge. Hope this helps anyone.

I feel your pain! I'm in an apartment and they are living in my drains from my neighbours. It got so bad I was running around my apartment with a can of raid. We took ALL of our recycling out, washed our garbage cans out (that was a big one), Plug all drains and put a layer of bleach on top, and this morning has been very peaceful and fruit fly free.

Food, clothes, cleaning products, home decor, you name it. You and I are different ages, I am 58, but we are very like-minded. I wish I had friends like you when I was a younger mom. Great tips I just made some traps because these flies are driving me crazy. I also wanted to say your video is such a great example of the ideal KZfaq video. You approached this fly issue like a Ken Burns documentary with background info on types of flies, differences in what they ate, etc. but for the everyday person, very simply and in just 12 minutes. Bravo

Thank you for the video. Two other things, these flies are also attracted to the light when it is dark outside. So...I have found that setting a trap in a bathroom, at night, with that light on (and no other light on in the house) draws most of the flies in the house to that light source and therefore a great opportunity for them to be attracted to your trap. Yes, their eggs are already on the fruit we buy▬so that fruit needs to be washed and dried when we get it home.

I find my propane blowtorch to be an effective and very satisfying alternative to a fly swatter. Traps work best for gnats obviously but the blowtorch is great for instant bug killing. Especially great for getting those really fast and hard to kill spiders and wasps which dont die right away when you spray them with raid. Just use short quick bursts of flame so you dont catch anything on fire.

(1 of 2) Hi there, the name of the bugs you probably have are called 'fungus gnats.' I had them back in spring and they can be really hard to get rid of. There are loads of ideas for ways to get rid of them though. For a free option they like moist soil so letting the plants dry out helps. Also there are sticky traps available from garden centers or amazon that help trap and kill the adults. If these plants are not edibles there and granules you can add to the soil to kill the larve. (cont.)

I couldn't figure why I had an infestation of gnats off and on for years. Once I had wingless hoppity gnats jumping on the counter tops, that was horrible. I'm not sure, but maybe the 'wingless hoppity gnats' were actually baby gnats? Then when fixing my kitchen sink drain plumbing leak, they were down in there. Fixed the leak /sprayed the area under the sink with RAID flying insect spray. Also misted the kitchen area with the spray. No more gnats! hope this helps someone else. cheers

As a pest control technician, I can definitively say that removing the conducive conditions for fruit flys is 100% the way to get rid of them. There must be a rotten fruit somewhere and when you find it and remove it, then and only then will the fruit flys go away. I actually found an orange in a desk drawer in the garage. After I trashed it, and trapped the flys in vingar/soap mix, i had no more issues.

I noticed that during peak season they seemed to like a good red wine. If the bottle was left open for a few minutes the next glass would have one or two swimming around in it. To catch them I would pour a bit into a small glass or leave a little in the empty wine bottle setting on the counter. The wine bottle worked except they could easily escape and come and go...like at Denny's. The glass never worked very well. I never thought of the funnel in the glass idea. Brilliant! Thanks

i did all your ideas too, and made one from another video i watched as well as getting a few of those apple looking fruit fly traps from the store. the ones you had worked alright but required about 5-10 days to rly start working. the fruit fly apple thing from the store barely had any fruit flies going to it. the one that worked right away and had jus as much as the three you showed was getting a water bottle and cutting it to being like an inch from the bottom and filling it almost to about 2mm left at the top with apple cider vinegar, than adding like 2 little drops of dish soap, and than filling it with more apple cider vinegar to where it almost spills. this worked because the water bottle is very thin and the fruit flies liked to land on the edge, and with it filled that much they actually get sucked into the the liquid when they land on the edge. the hassel about this one was that you gotta top it off with more apple cider vinegar as it evaporates every few days. o yea i also made several of the 3 you did and tried a different amount of apple cider vinegar and dish soap, and yea the obvious one that worked the best was the one with only 2-3 little drops of dish soap and the rest as apple cider vinegar. it rly is like how you said that the dish soap is rly jus there to change the surface tension of the apple cider vinegar to make them sink instd of floating at the top and maybe eventually fly out again. less dish soap also means more apple cider vinegar to make them come to the trap. another thing i noticed was that if the trap you are using is much wider they will come to it more easier as they can smell it or whatever they use to find the rotting food as they fly around. like a plastic plate with a thin edge.

I just recently had a fruit fly problem. I threw some banana peels into the trash, figuring that I'd be emptying it in a few days. Big mistake! Within a day or two there were little flies coming out of the can and flying all around the kitchen. I had some apple cider vinegar that I'd bought a few years ago when I had a similar problem, but it didn't work. Maybe it's too old? I put some in a cup with a little dish soap, and they would land on the rim, but not go in. Thinking back, even when I first bought the ACV, it never caught tons of them. I'd check them in the morning and find 4-5 in it, but not bunches of them. I killed a bunch of them with an electric bug zapper racket. Not really the most effective way of getting rid of them, but kind of satisfying. Take the top off the garbage can, hold the racket over it and and shake the can. It sounds like popcorn. :) I've had the best luck with traps similar to your water bottle trap. I wanted to test it on a small scale, so I used a tall pill bottle for my trap. I made a paper cone with a small hole in the end, inverted in the mouth of the bottle and for bait I used a piece of rotting banana from the last one that I ate after emptying the garbage. I set it on the edge of my sink in the morning, it had at least a couple dozen flies in it. I think I made the hole a little too large and had the tip a little too close to the bait because I think some of the flies escaped. I thought I saw one crawl into the hole, but they're so fast, it was hard to tell. To get rid of them, I filled it with water. I reasoned that they wouldn't be able to fly soaking wet, so I took it into the bathroom, pulled out the cone and dumped the contents into the toilet. Turns out that they CAN fly while wet. Probably half of them got away! I reset my original trap, baited with a piece of rotting banana peel and some ripe nectarine. I made a new cone with a smaller hole that didn't reach down as far and left it in the kitchen. It caught probably a dozen or so. This time I filled the trap with scalding hot water and let it sit for about ten minutes. For good measure, I even added a little dish soap. By the time I emptied it, none were moving. I made a new cone and also made three additional traps. I left two in the kitchen, one in the bathroom and one in my bedroom. Each of them has caught 10-12 flies. I guess the population is just about done as I haven't seen any random ones flying around for the past couple days. Then again, maybe the smaller holes in the cones don't let as much of the smell out. For being so attracted to the fruit in the bottom, they spend most of their time trying to find a way out. Their instincts tell them to go up, but there's no way out there. They aren't smart enough to figure out that they need to go to the tip of the cone to get out. Supposedly the same type trap will work on regular flies, you just need the right bait for them.

Regular white vinegar plus some fruit juice and a couple drops of liquid soap will work. I currently have one or two fungus fly-sized gnats that fly between me and my monitor of my computer. I found that holding a can of Lysol spray, spraying a spirt, will make those bugs drop to the top of the desk and then I can swat/kill them (then disinfect the area) when no other effort works.

OMG girl the vacuum works like magic! I covered a bowl w/ plastic that they were munchin on (salad w/ dressing) and after 2 hours had captured a lot, but I like immediate gratification so I got out the vacuum and sucked up every last one of those little annoying Bas Tards. It worked so good that after about 10 min I was searching just to find one. Hopefully the hatched eggs will get trapped in the salad bowl too. If not I know how to get rid of them. :)

I have learned a lot from your videos. So helpful. Your parents have got to be so proud of their daughter .You share your information in a way anyone can understand. The explanations are stated slowely. That helps as I write your awesome ideas and solutions down on paper as you share. You are a very sweet girl , smart, confident and caring. I used apple juice and sliced older peach covered with saran wrap plus tiny holes in center on the counter. next day the little buggers were in the jar dead. Thank you and keep up the good work. You could really go places ! Great speaker.

Great video, thank you! Have tried the cider vinegar trap to good effect. Think I may have some fungus flies around too, will research a fix and report back. Thanks again, from Bonny Scotland :)

I use 1/3 cup Windex to 2/3 water in a small garden hand sprayer with an adjustable spray nozel; for "ALL FLIES." I TRIED USING THE WINDEX BOTTLES BUT THEY ARE CHEAP AND DON'T LAST. THIS is for when you turn on the lights and some of your fruit rotted spray and saturate the flies. Windex sets fast and doesn't leave lines just dead flies. Also, 1/3 TO 2/3, Windex is good for kitchen invations of "ANTS." I use those sticky ribbons in the areas they are found; kills hundreds.

I used the vacuum method. It works great, but after a while the bats are conditioned to flee at the sound of the vacuum. Skinner wins again or possible Jung 's inherited memory.

Putting this to the test with a mixture of dish soap, white vinegar, small pieces of watermelon, and some beer ("what a waste!" my partner languished as he poured precious drops of Unibroue dark ale into the trap). Will update when we see if it works! :D

Just stumbled on this one by mistake, but whiskey is an insanely good bait. I set a glass down and they were all over it. Put a little in a trap 2 minutes ago and I've already caught 4 or 5 flies. Haven't caught any with the apple cider vinegar I set up yesterday

A lot of you won’t want to go for this if you’re not that wealthy (I’m doing pretty well, I own a few casinos), but beluga caviar with some honey mixed with soap drizzled on. Unfortunately you need at least an ounce of the beluga for each trap, and it must be fresh. As the eggs start to rot, the rotting fish smell really attracts the flies. But it only works with beluga. No other fish, no other caviar. Good luck!

Just joking! Btw, excellent video, thanks for constructive tips (and much cheaper than if I had to buy caviar!)

Get one of those square yellow sticky fly traps, put some holes in. Place it on top of the jar over the wrap with holes it catches a lot soon as they land since they try to find the way in.

Here is an idea that works for me and that is put your fruit into a brown paper bag that way you can leave your fruit out! The bag will keep the flies off your fruit while the paper that the bag is made of will still allow the fruit to breathe and not cause mold.

We just put some apple cider vinegar mixed with a couple drops of honey on the counter, and the fruit flies went got in it and died. We got a fruit flies again the next summer, but it didn't work again - the flies were not attracted to it. Maybe that's because they were a different species. Gnats, perhaps?

An easy instant way that works for me is a torch lighter or even just a lighter and any aerosol can ie Air Freshener, Spray deodorant. I have to wait until morning to get some apple cider vinegar but good idea by setting a trap first for sure because they seem to catch on pretty quick otherwise lol. You have lots of good ideas :)

A few months ago I had DRAIN FLIES. They are different from gnats or sour gnats that are attracted to fruit. They're larger, about a quarter of the size of house flies. I tried bleach, boiling water, drain cleaner and a couple of other things in combination but nothing seemed to work. Lowe's sells a product that is made just for this purpose. I was told our local store didn't have anything like that and not THAT product....yet...I found it online. Needing it NOW....I did not order it....just kept on using what I had on hand. Baking soda mixed with white vinegar seemed to work best of all. I put clear tape over the bathroom drains in shower stalls and sinks....so all I had to deal with was the kitchen sink. Finally.....they were all....gone. I'd never had drain flies in all my years of housemaking....45 years. This was a new experience for me.
