OMG Thank you everyone for your comments and leaving a note on your experience! (So sorry I totally didn't see the comments till now because we left this channel to rot for a bit, oops!) I loved reading all of them! I'll answer a few FAQ! 1. Generally any oil that is edible for your pet works (I chose a regular olive oil from Bertolli) - you can use coconut oil [do research if suitable for your own pet] etc as some have suggested in the comments, or even organic ones. The reason for doing so i that your pet will be very likely to lick the area, or use their paws to scratch the area, then lick their paws. We will want to make sure that the oil that may potentially be ingested be safe for them to do so. Thus do research and take into consideration what your pet can/cannot ingest :) Consider a cushioned e-collar if you choose this method but your pet is prone to licking off the oil. 2. Combing and tugging the matted fur after you notice the knot moving out to speed up the process of the knot coming off may still cause some pain to your pet. I would suggest to lightly tug at it with your hands and see if it causes your pet any distress before doing so. (Of course combing and grooming on a regular basis will help to decrease matted fur but you know that already! ;) 3. After the matt/knots have fallen off I'll take my cat for a wet shower so don't worry, this olive oil treatment is only for a few days before your pet has shiny and clean fur again! (I have not used it as a topical/regular treatment when there are no knots in the fur so I am unable to comment on that) I have used this as an on-the-spot treatment. 4. Effie's small knot took 5 days to fall off, it might take longer for larger areas or knots. Do be patient with the process :) And PSA: yes I'm not a vet and this is a rather simple at-home treatment. Please do your research if you have any concerns, and choose what is right for you and your pet. This is definitely not the only method to loosen/remove matted fur -- if it's a very serious condition, do get it checked out by a professional, or shave it down as you wish! I would prefer to leave my cat and his beautiful fur intact hence it was not the method I went for. Ultimately we all just want the best for our pets :) Love to you all from Effie and I! x

I'm going through this too, my cat is long haired, hates being brushed and is already on anxiety medication daily... She had severe trauma before I adopted her and is just not agreeable to anything or anyone besides me. This is the first year her matting has been bad enough that I can't get it out myself. I'll try the olive oil and pray it helps but these are pretty bad... Vet said it would be 400$ to sedate and buzz her, which is insane... and her matting seems to be in one area on her back. How much Olive oil did you use?

This technique works like magic! My Persian cat has four matted hair all about an inch wide on her underside near her front legs. It's been weeks since I started agonizing about how to remove them as they are all already adjacent to her skin. I followed the instructions on this video and applied olive oil on each matte. After one day, two of the mattes on her left side disappeared. Most likely, they fell somewhere. Too bad I didn't get to see them. Per the video, I applied olive oil on the remaining two mattes on her right side. Now on Day 3, I saw two of the mattes on the floor. Honestly, I was expecting it will take longer to see if this works. Now my cat is matte free! This is magic! Thanks for the video! 😊

I thought i would just chip in from Scotland, we have a lovely Forest cat, and this year in particular she has been building up mats in her coat despite rigorous daily grooming, most came out with usual light teasing, I must confess I did see the original idea in another video, but unable to comment on it (sorry), so credit to you for such a good tutorial. Two treatments for two large mats on ruff and flank and they have fallen out, or were easily teased out with no trauma, she does look a little sparse hair wise on her side as it was a big mat, but will grow back. We bought a pack of 2ml syringes from ebay for pennies and just carefully applied it round the base of mat, while she moaned pitifully and fell asleep in my wife's arm's. Only one biggie to go, great stuff, thanks

well, we tried the olive oil, my wife found a lump of matted cat fur on the floor, it had been on our cat before it was found on the floor, the thing fell off on its own, we are really shocked that it was so easy to get rid of matted fur, your video really helped a lot, we have started to work on more matted hair spots. this is so much easier than trying to comb them out of their fur, they do not enjoy that at all.

I have a Mainecoon and absolutely HATES being brush, but we brush him regularly and for a week or two we slacked. Randomly noticed he had Matt’s in the WORST possible spots, armpits and stomach (thin sensitive skin). Just tried this and noticed it was loosening the hair/matt by his skin! Even gently pulled a small matt off with a little scissor snips! Will up date to let everyone know how it went, because the giant Matt’s in between his legs below/on his stomach are really bad. 🤞🏾

@@Kashifh91 I can give you guys an update!! 6/12/23 So I watched this last week. He said it took 5 days to get rid of the one little thing. Well, my poor old loonnng haired adopted kitty, had a bunch of mats on his chest below his neck, between his front legs!! I brushed everyday with 4 types of brushes/combs. never thinking to brush there as often! I did sometimes, but didn't realize they could mat there. It's so weird....anyways, I oiled him down, (too good) and at about 3 days a small one came off. Then today I found 2 more, smalk one, then his last huge one! Now, he had more than 3, so he must have lost it somewhere I can't see, yet? Also, he was able to lick in that area, so he obviously helped pull them out to a point, I guess... Anyway, he's oily, 😬He's getting groomed and shaved down to a "Teddy Bear" cut tomorrow. He'll feel better, and so will I!! It's nerve racking 😮

Thank you for giving me hope that I can avoid a costly vet visit. The kitty I am concerned about is only about 5 years old and loves being brushed. Normally I have zero matting issues but after some pretty major health issues, I was unable to keep up with routine care for his fur. I was so ashamed at how bad the matting had become in such a short amount of time. I tries several tools that were advertised to remove mats but they proved worthless. I now have a safe trimmer that is very quiet but will be using your olive oil method first. I know that if a cat injests hair, it is recommended (by a lot of vets) to give them some oily foods to help them pass the hairballs rather than coughing them up so I feel comfortable using olive oil. Please wish me luck, I feel like such a bad 'kitty mama'!

Oh my goodness! I don't know how to say thank you! One of my cats stopped grooming himself because of chronic gingivitis. My fault that the fur started to mat in areas I didn't brush properly. But this is amazing! He's almost completely mat free after 3 years! What's really great is that I used coconut oil and he started grooming himself again. Either he likes the taste or hates the feel of the oil but he grooms himself now. The oil loosened the mats and he was able to lick most of them off. I think coconut oil also helps with the gingivitis since it's an anti inflammatory. And I'm told it prevents fur balls. Thank you on behalf of my kitty and myself 😊

Unfortunately I have no experience with lots of matted fur. Effie does have a knot come up from time to time if we don't groom him regularly. I do see lots of comments with others' experience of larger matted areas and that it does work for them as well. I would continually reapply if necessary, dab off any excess oil, and be patient and wait for it to drop off. For a small knot like Effie's it took 5 days, so it might definitely take a little while more for larger areas. Regarding oil, any pet-ingestible/safe oil would work, this is because of the possibility of them licking the area/paws if they manage to touch it. :)

She gave her an antibiotic shot because she said those hard mats can make the skin infected around them. Previously, the groomer had to sedate her with an inhaled sedation, but last time they used it, she stopped breathing. The vet breathed into her mouth and brought her around. No more sedation, but what can I use to calm her down? I'll try the olive oil treatment in the meantime.

My backyard cat was cleaning himself this morning. Saw his chewing on his foot. Thought he was cleaning his claws. Then I saw him pulling on something. There was this piece of skin connected to some fur . Didn’t look like a scab but the end of it was dirty . Tried pulling on it and it wouldn’t come out. So I spent the whole day at random point when he was sleeping ; and attempted to yank on it to pull it off. Took about 10 times on and off. But I managed to yank it off completely. All that came off was a clump of hair and all you see is his normal skin underneath. Mind you that this piece of hair / clump whatever it was. The piece I yanked off was extremely small. Applying oil (olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, or simmilar) once every two weeks can help prevent and resolve matted fur on any animals.
@larsonfamilyhouse
@larsonfamilyhouse Жыл бұрын
Oil causes yeast to grow though. It’s literally how they grow yeast for class in dermatology school. Oil goes rancid- especially on a hot cat and should not be ingested- kind of like how they recommend to wash food dishes daily- because the oil and bacteria make the oil used in food to go rancid. You don’t want a cat ingesting that. It’s best to just brush regularly. Chris Christensen makes a spray if you get into trouble- it’s called static spray. It’s best to stay away from anything on fur though because they ingest everything. CC is the only brand I know of that makes sure nothing is harmful but it’s kind of expensive. It’s worth it though if it helps ensure the life of your animal. Also you can use run cold water over a metal comb and brush- that helps too.

This is cute, but that’s not a serious matt. Just use blunt end scissors not oil. If the matt is close to the skin, cut into it perpendicular to the skin and pull it apart with your fingers. Matts are painful to cats when close to the skin. This was not one of those.

Ok I’m going to try this. I’ve been dwelling on Inkblots (my cat) mats now for quite some time. He is long haired and usually I’ve been able to keep up with his mats but now he’s got three large mats that are totally out of control. I can’t take knowing how uncomfortable he must be. I’ve tried combing, cutting, pulling them apart, etc. but he gets so irritated and I don’t want his fangs sunken into my body. IM DOING THIS and I’ll check back in with results!

@@havannaoonana-ow3gu omg, it actually REALLY did work. I honestly didn’t think it would work. FIRST i tried using coconut oil. I warmed it to a liquid, making sure to cool it to room temp before applying. You have to make sure to really rub that stuff in deeply. Get it all around and as much at the base of the matt as possible. Try as much as you can to rub it INTO the matt or matts themselves. I checked the matts often and made sure to reapply and rub in whenever I found time to over about a 3 to 4 day period. On the 3rd day I was shocked to find that the two biggest and most terrible matts were actually gone! I couldn’t tell if they had merely just come apart or if they fell off somewhere. (He is an indoor outdoor cat with a big yard area to wander in) I did a double check and felt all over, not believing that it could have actually worked so well! Those two huge matts were tight to his skin and must have been terribly uncomfortable as he was sensitive to every time I tried to work with them. He had a large matt on his back area right at base of tail which I decided to try doing the OLIVE oil way. It worked as well taking about three days. Since he has such fine long hair he did appear a little greasy and leaves and twigs stuck to him because of it but once he became matt free I used his rinse free cat shampoo and cleaned him up well, massaging it through all fur and then toweling him off well…then I combed him out as best I could while damp and let him handle the rest. After a day of that he was looking GREAT and he seems to be happy with his fur!

Yes! Hopefully your cat doesn't lick it all off? Olive oil was my chosen oil because it's safe to ingest for cats (although do be mindful of the amount they're ingesting, put on an elizabeth collar if you have to!). Do apply the oil directly to the matt and gently massage it into the fur so it will work its magic inside the knots (unlikely to be licked off that thoroughly I hope?!) hahaha all the best!

@GrifoStelle
@GrifoStelle Жыл бұрын
Comments for the algorithm Cats weren't like this in nature. We made them like this the same way we inbred english and french bull dogs until they required c sections to give birth. The way we created apples by cross breeding the only 2 apple-like trees to make the variety we have now the way we invented lemons broccoli cauliflower and brussel sprouts. The way we sterilized bananas to remove their seeds and caused the extinction of the variety "banana flavored" candies imitates. The way we inbred and crossbred our food to be huge, have a uniform taste and be nearly infertile. We made these. We have to take care of them. As for ferrel cat breeds. Matted fur could be socially groomed if they have a family. If not it means either torn skin or infection and a puss filled agonizing early death to sepsis. Nature doesn't give a f. The bubonic plague and spanish flu were 100% natural, so is rabies and malaria. Nature is on noone's side, noone is special. In the least modernized human populations we die early too. The median age in a certain continent is 19, in some countries life expectancy is 40 years. Nature is like a religious book, nice to idealize but best applied sparingly.

Vets say not to use olive oil because yeast can grow plus cats are hot and it can go rancid- especially in a hard to reach spot they already aren’t cleaning. Chris Christensen makes a static spray that looks like it’d be helpful- that’s the only brand I’ve found to be reliable about cat safety. I haven’t ordered the spray yet because it’s kind of a lot but I have a lot of work ahead of me so I might end up getting it.
