In this 2-part episode Mark Vogt - host of VOGTLAND OUTDOORS - challenges himself to find an entire barebow archery "kit" for UNDER $100.
We go through ALL the steps ANY "newbie" to archery would go through, helping you understand what you NEED vs what you WANT, and helping you make good decisions.
Then we apply this newfound knowledge an actually go shopping on Amazon, select a "shortlist" of possible candidates, then methodically ELIMINATE the non-contender until we're left with a WINNER.
Then we ORDER and UNBOX IT.
COME WATCH !!!!

This is the SINGLE BEST "how to get started" video out there. One thing I would add as a comment is to explain why to look (as you were already doing around the 9 minute mark.) at take-down bows so the limbs can be swapped out. That way a new shooter can start with a light weight to focus on form and technique with minimal fatigue. Then graduate to more power as their skills grow. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!

To be honest I started to use your walking method after I had my first archery lesson and found it so so helpful, I haven’t mentioned it to anybody at the club as of yet , I thing it might be like teaching old dogs new tricks. I have bought a bow (Mandarin duck Windrunner) will hopefully will arrive in the next few days will report back on my thoughts. Thanks for the arrow info .George

George, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA --- I have SO MANY viewers-turned-SUBSCRIBERS who feel the SAME way as you: This shooting method makes SO MUCH SENSE that it feels like CHEATING - right? But you have to ask yourself one CRITICAL QUESTION: WHY are all the OTHER archers SO UTTERLLY (FUCKING) CONVINCED that their "INSTINCTIVE" shooting method is truly actually "TRADITIONAL" ? I can GUARANTEE that you when you use ARCHERY to SURVIVE (either for WAR or for EATING), there's NOTHING you're going to do that is a WASTE of ENERGY or a WASTE of ACCURACY - Instinctive shooting is LUDICROUS. We only do it because someone somewhere sometime long long ago saw some WOOODCARVING of what looked like archers shooting "instinctively", and since then we've ALL SUFFERED from their irrational, foolish hold on ALL of archery :O I can GUARANTEE you that MYRIAD cultures long-since FORGOTTEN - ones who SURVIVED using a bow & arrow - all used MY shooting method. Why? BECAUSE IT FUCKING WORKS, that's why. And when SUCCESSFUL archery meant the difference between EATING and STARVING, I can GUARANTEE you noone gave a flying-fuck-in-outer-space about whether or not they were "cheating" - what a LUDICROUS concept! Let's hope we all finally regain our senses before I die. That would be nice ;-) d -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS

Greetings George and welcome to VOGTLAND OUTDOORS ! YOU BRING UP AN EXCELLENT QUESTION TO WHICH MANY PEOPLE GIVE ANSWERS... ... BUT FEW OF THEM CAN EXPLAIN "WHY" THEY ARRIVED AT THOSE ANSWERS :-O. I'LL do my best to EXPLAIN my answer - here goes !... REALITY: There is NO SUCH THING as one single "IDEAL" length bow for any one person. Period. There IS SUCH A THING as many different bow LENGTHS & TYPES which are BAD for a particular person. Let me explain this... SIMPLE FACT: IF you're holding a bow which was DESIGNED to handle YOUR own DRAW LENGTH, then it IS a POTENTIAL "fit" for you. Period. What DECIDES if you'll LIKE shooting it will then come down to ONE THING: HOW YOU HOLD THE BOWSTRING :-O I'll be you didn't see THAT coming, so let me explain THIS: 1. AT FULL DRAW your bowstring looks like a "V" lying on its side, with your HAND at the point of this "V"; 2. For a given Draw LENGTH, the ANGLE this "V" make will become NARROWER and NARROWER the SHORTER the bow is - does this make sense to you? 3. IF you have a really SHORT bow (say 48 inches, which is actually a COMMON RECURVE and ASIAN bow), then when you pull back to 29.5 inches, that angle is PRETTY NARROW, so - trying to fit THREE FINGERS and an ARROW NOCK in that angle is going to feel TIGHT and UNCOMFORTABLE, MAYBE even PAINFUL :-O; but - trying to fit only TWO fingers and arrow nock will fit BETTER, but now those 2 fingers need to be STRONG; and - trying to fit a THUMB RELEASE into that angle will be SIMPLER YET; and finally - trying to fit a MECHANICAL (eg Compound Bow) release into that angle will be TRIVIAL THAT ALL SAID 4. IF you have a really TALL bow (say 72 inches, which is quite common for an English Longbow or an Olympic Recurve Bow), then at full draw the "V" angle is MUCH wider - NOTICEABLY wider - and you'll be able to fit all 3 of your fingers in EASILY, SO BOW HEIGHT ALL COMES DOWN TO COMFORT - PURE & SIMPLE. Me? I'm also 6ft-1in, with a 31.5 in draw length, and I own & shoot a favorite 58# hunting bow that is only 48inches tall, and it IS "TIGHT" when I'm at full draw, but I LOVE this old bow (a 1974 Darton Magnum - look it up), so I've ADJUSTED how I draw it so that my RING FINGER kind of "floats" down the lower part of the "V" and DOESN'T pull as hard as the other 2 fingers - at least not at FULL draw... MY RECOMMENDATION FOR YOU: You'll feel quite comfortable looking for any recurve bows between 64 inches and 68 inches :-) In fact here is a bow I like SO much that I currently own THREE of them (30#, 40#, 45#) because they're CHEAP ($104 each!) and they SHOOT LIKE A DREAM: amzn.to/3AFBKLq Even at FULL draw it my 3 "drawing" fingers NEVER feel crowded or pinched. But know that as you start to get SHORTER, the "V" in the bowstring WILL get NARROWER, and your fingers WILL start to feel pinched. Hope this helps, -Mark Vogt | VOGTLAND OUTDOORS
