I always have spill issues with book light setups. A more in depth tutorial video on this would be great!

I usually control spill with a grid on the front of the booklight same size as surface. Then if needs I’ll add floppy’s if I need to cut further (like to prevent spill falling on an angled wall)

Nice breakdown on your method. I've used the 1200 Aputure a few times recently (I own two 600 but rent the 1200). And I'm not a big fan of backlighting hair because I feel it looks so commercial but in the end it almost always helps...your's was just the perfect amount without being distracting. Recently lit with 1200 / lantern thru a silk and the other 1200 bounced off a white ceiling for a back light. LED lights are so amazing since they give such control so quickly.

I feel the same way about backlighting- not everything needs to be perfect all the time so I tend to make it super subtle when I can. I'm almost always balancing between house power so LEDs have become a pretty invaluable tool!

Dude, how could I miss you until now. Just looked for interview lighting tips (have a shoot coming up tomorrow) and stumbled across this video. Definitely liked and subcribed!! One question: If you say adjust WhiteBalance to background lights you cant control (which I understand), do you adjust your controlled lights to the color temperature of the set White Balance?

Hey Rob, would it be wrong to change the color temperature of your lights to match the room color temperature?

Sure, if you want the room to appear white, but I usually don't want the room to appear pure white. Oftentimes it feels too "sterile."

I have to pick up another ultrabounce for the other side of my booklight, this is how I usually setup as well but have been flagging the ends. Finding frustration with G/M shift on location and planning on picking up a full-color light to deal with it. Have you ever used a Nova P300 directly into a half grid, do you find it gives the same quality as a booklight since the panel is already soft? Or is there a noticeable difference between the booklight and the p300 into half grid? Would appreciate your advice on this...

I would use RGB panels all the time for that reason but now find myself using bi-color lights more and more unless the G/M shift is particularly egregious. I'd usually blast a SkyPanel with a Chimera into some half grid but it doesn't seem to have that same "glow" as book lights, but that could just be me.

Hey Robert, what IRE are you shooting for on the exposure of the faces? I'm usually around 50-60 IRE. Back in the day, it was usually 75IRE.

Depends on complexion, but generally 40-50 for darker skin tones and up to 55-60 for lighter skin tones.

When utilizing a traditional book light for an interview setup. Does the direction in which the book opens up to (where your placing lights); have any significance?

Yes, typically you'll have a lot less spill when the book opens up closest to camera.

Sure, just depends on what exposure you want. I was rating at 200 EI and I don't think I was at full power.

This seems like so much gear. Is this look somewat achievable for intermediates who don't have a dozen C stands and all the floppies? Also, I'm curious as to how you're rigging and connecting everything. It seems daunting if you haven't been doing it.

It is a lot of gear. If you look at the shots, they are lighting big spaces. A solo filmmaker could certainly pull off something that looks good with far less gear simply by shooting in smaller spaces.

You can easily sub this stuff out with light stands and DIY diffusion like bed sheets, foam board insulation, and shower curtains.
