I've been playing fiddle for 30+ years, but mostly traditional Irish music, New England contra, etc. Never liked the way I played old time music because it never sounded like old time music. This is a complete game-changer!! Never too old to learn new tricks :) thank you!

Hey Fiddlehed! THANK you ever so much for all the new tips and tricks. You are an amazing, gifted, wonderful teacher of ALL teachers! You're the Best teacher, EVOH!! We want to let you know how much we appreciate all the hard work you put into creating these incredibly unique videos for us. Your teaching style is truly exceptional, light years above and beyond other tutors, and your genuine kindness, humility, and sincerity shine through in every video. You teach like you WANT us to learn. You make your lessons 101. YAY!! You're always mindful that some of us are learning. We humbly, graciously, kindly inquire if we may propose a teeny tiny request, though - do you think you could encourage us in a slightly different way? We recently watched a video where the teacher mentioned that using phrases like "it is hard, very hard" can make students feel tense, anxious, and fearful, hindering their ability to improve. Instead, will you consider framing challenges as "advanced but achievable"? We believe this change in perspective will really help all of us trying to master these techniques. We are incredibly grateful for all you do, and we hope you know how much we admire, respect, and appreciate you. Thanks a quadrillion million! Appreciate you! Keep up the fantastic work! WE. LOVE. YOU! Be blessed. 🤗 ❤

I have never played a fiddle, but I have a decent one ordered, and I can't wait to start learning. I am a gigging lead & rhythm guitar player, and I hope some of what I know about guitar strums and playing by ear crosses over to fiddle playing. I can picture fiddle lines out in my head, but I don't know how that will work out in actual practice. I'll know soon!

Great video, as always @fiddleHed! Just a question: Is it common to maintain this offbeat hoedown rhythm throughout the "part B" of many fiddle tunes (one example being Arkansas Traveler)? I was under the impression that the B portion is played a little "smoother" (without the accents), but that could be wrong. Thanks!

Thanks for the great videos! I would love to learn this technique. I do have a question. In the beginning you talk about accenting the first short beat of each hoedown. But the exercises seem to be accenting the first long beat of each hoedown. So I think I am missing something. Can you help me understand this? Thanks!
@fiddl3hed
@fiddl3hed 7 жыл бұрын
You can practice accenting either the long note (beats one and three) are the first short note (beats 2 and four) which is more challenging.

In trying to add a real rhythm to my bowing, my bow is bouncing all over the place if I don't bow down toward the frog. As you ask specifically for middle bow, I am not sure why this is so huge a problem other than I'm new? Just keep trying is what I have as a plan at this point. Or perhaps it's fine to get good at it where I am and slowly move toward the middle?

Depending on the key you are playing and the string you are hitting, it might sound ok. Practice scales "putting the crunch" on the notes and pay attention to the bow angle. Sometimes these things take a little time and suddenly you are just doing it the way you intended.

A lot of violin teachers tape their fingerboards so students have an easier time seeing the fingering and or, the violin is also used by students. Same with marking the bow with tape. He may allow students to use that bow.
