Painting from reference photos is popular and convenient. Especially when confined to the indoors. This tutorial has my Top Tips for getting the best photo references for painting. Too often beginners use the wrong photos and this causes a world of problems. Many little niggles crop up in their paintings and they are not sure what the problem is. Very often the reference photo is some stock image filled with over the top editing. Instead make these tips part of your process for great references.

I've been learning to paint with oils for several years but had never figured out how to take my photos properly and to really look at the light and shade!! This was very helpful!!

This was super useful - I’ve been struggling with photo references for landscape practice, now I understand partly that is because I’m only out in the middle of the day, when i take my daughter to the park. I will start taking walks at other times, thanks Malcolm!

Thank you for addressing stock photographs and their unrealistic colour values. I usually just use them for line drawings. Will definitely spend more time considering warm light, shadows etc when setting up my own reference photographs.

Thank you Malcolm! I am beginner and I am guilty of choosing a stock photo with the most sweeping panoramas from close up long grasses to four layers of rolling hills mountains with shadows and dramatic sky and trying to slavishly recreate it on a 8 by 12 panel.

Hi Malcolm. I am really loving all your videos. thank you so much for your generosity. I was wondering if you have tackled the subject of painting birds as subjects (loose style). I am a beginner artist and im not sure where to start with them. I love sea birds and would love to create some paintings with birds as the main subject. thanks again for all your tutorials. love them. Sarah

Thanks Malcolm, you just confirmed why my pictures taken early in the morning or later in the evening are more appealing for painting because of the stronger shadows and light. Again, thanks for your very informative videos!
