Very cool. Would love to see it done with a regular unprocessed vocal with no distortion.

Thanks! I actually just finished a mix for a tune that fits that criteria - I’ll make a video like that once they release it!

Love it. I too often use quite elaborate vocal chains to get the FX sound I'm after and then do what it takes to get it to sit in the mix. There's a lot of dogma on KZfaq that says like "you throw so many plugins on your chain that you tie yourself in knots. No need for that, keep it simple and you'll find the results are better and won't be so over-processed." Hogwash. There is such a thing as an over-processed sound. But it mostly doesn't come from "too many plugins." It comes from bad mixing technique and poor ear judgments. It is great to use a ton of plugins, especially when they all serve a different role, and they do so in moderation, until they add up to become the final desired result. Bottom line, if the sound isn't where you envisioned quite yet, don't be biased toward leaving it alone for fear of "too many plugins."

Absolutely agree. It ain't done until it's done! I heard a podcast with Andrew Scheps were he said something along the lines of "there's no reason to send a mix until it sounds exactly like you intended." I'm sure I butchered it, but it was inspiring to just keep going until you're happy anyways!

I've been recording my vox by running it through a tube pre for one channel to get that warm fuzzy sometimes distorted sound to give a little retro feel and then feed the vox to a clean channel. I can then blend the clean and fuzzy to my taste. Gives it a nice warm character :-)

Tube pres are awesome for exactly this! I used a tube mic on this vocal (If I’m remembering correctly). Glad you’re getting a good result with your gear. What tube pre do you have?

could you explain this setup for me because I'm not sure I understand it? do you just mean you run the vocals through a slightly driven pre and then into a clean/low-gain channel of your interface or have I got something wrong?

@@kubok275 Sorry it took me a bit to get an answer to you on this! In the case of an external tube preamp it usually means that is THE pre amp in the chain. So straight from mic, into tube preamp, which goes Line in directly to your interface - so it's not going into a secondary preamp. Does that make sense?

Well done. I use the decapitator also but had always had trouble with harsh upper frequency getting to gnarly. Need to find a way to isolate and compress before sending into the plug in.

Lately I’ve been using OEK soothe 2 as my de-harsh tool before hitting any saturation and really loving it! A combination of it, eq and de-essing seems to always get me there in the end!

Indeed, a very good result. But you already captured the idea of the sound with the recording. I personally would never think to throw that long of a plug-in chain on a track. Probably because I like things to be tidy and minimal.

Thanks! It's definitely not typical for me to end up with that much stuff thrown on - but when adding more and more distortion onto a track I find it takes a few steps fo give and take to get it just right!

sorry am new to this. Can you tell me what recording with a tube mic and compressed does and maybe how to do so? I love this and am so excited to record
@tristanlapoint1798

I'm not an expert, but a tube mic will add some saturation/color/warmth to the sound you record with it. Compressing a signal "squishes" the dynamic range (basically turning down the loudest peaks) so that you can push the volume in the mix to give it more presence without clipping. Hope that helps!

How can you get that tone live on vocals?
@malcomowenflood
@malcomowenflood 8 ай бұрын
I really don't consider myself to be a live audio engineer, so I'd take my advice in that department with a grain of salt... But - it's certainly possible to run many plugins live these days, so you could in theory run a similar chain to what's shown here in a DAW, live! But if you are looking to avoid a computer in the chain, it would just mean using hardware to accomplish the goal! Preamps and compressors could be overdriven to try and achieve a similar sound, but I'm sure there are also vocal effect effect racks/pedals that could get you in the ball park too. My concern with this live would be creating a feedback nightmare - and that is where you would want to talk to a Live audio expert!
