Maybe the best golf video on the Internet. Seen a million videos telling me toothpaste, bird, 5/10 blah blah blah These exercises actually teach you fundamentaly the real feel of grip pressure Eureka moment

I have long wondered about grip pressure and this video has relieved my confusion. I was on a simulator when I first tried this and found, to my delight, that my clubhead speed actually increased with the lighter grip. I have played for fifty years with a baseball grip and have now changed to a Vardon grip which has proven to be a great benefit. I had resisted that all these years feeling that I could not hold the grip tightly enough. How wrong I was! Thanks Chris!

Before I saw this video, a fitter told me to loosen up my grip. Seriously has been the best advice I've had so far. When you are more comfortable,you become more confident and can swing more consistently in your own tempo. Thanks for confirming, Chris keep up the great work!

Thanks ChrisRyanGolf, I struggle with too much tension in my hands in golf all the time. This really helps to be able to work on it at home.

Hi Chris. I’m focusing on this at the moment and another good drill is to place a bean bag or a shoe say behind the club, if you can barge it out of the way in your backswing you are gripping too tight. Correct grip pressure would mean dragging the club head over the bag or shoe without moving it.
@CorekBleedingHollow5 жыл бұрын
I was still able to do circles when gripping the club very tight. So I was starting to be skeptical until I did the second exercise. It was hard to do the waggle with a grip too tight.

Thank you for giving the visual and feeling of what correct pressure and wrist tension should feel and look like. I'm an 11 handicap and after several driving range sessions working on those shot 1 over par on a 9 hole executive course. Much appreciated.

Great lesson. Thank you. The differentiation between tension in fingers and wrists was an eye opener and the practical exercises far more helpful than a pressure 'scale'. Question: Should one conciously try to maintain the 'starting pressure' throughout the swing and especially during transition. Any thoughts??

Lay most of my golf in a 30 to50 kph wind. This really encourages to tight a grip. Your video is really great and a firm base to work on. Thanks for this and so. Any other great videos. By the way, I play on a championship links in South Africa, not only wind but pot flat bottom bunkers which really mess up your score.

I am currently without a teacher. But my caddie has sensitivity. I think about asking my caddie to take, ask to pull, the club out of my hands and also and also only from my left hand. With the aim, for the purpose, of testing, checking, comparing the pressure of my grip.

Ex Judo player, with a very strong grip (I'd crush any bird in my hands). I've had problems with control of club face and lack of distance. I've improved my back swing and follow through, but I think this maybe the ah ha moment. thanks

I find the best grip pressure to be quite different for each hand. The pinkie and ring finger of the lead hand are the strongest grip and the thumb, index and middle finger if the trail hand so light that they partially release at impact. This was forced on me by tendon problems but seems to work well. What do you think?

Chris, I used to strangle the grip. A friend suggested a while ago I try the Vardon grip instead of my normal interlocking grip. It seems to have helped me obtain a lighter grip pressure. I would be interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi Chris, Thanks for the video! I tend to grip my clubs too tight, causing my left shoulder to lock on the downward transition. Result lost in distance and blocking my shots. I have been able to loosen my grip but still have trouble unlocking my left shoulder. Direction improved but I feel that I am not releasing my club well. Hope you have a cure for the locked shoulder. Thanks

Hi Tommy, I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean by a locked shoulder, not sure I’ve ever come across this 👍

ChrisRyanGolf - the feeling I hv is my left shoulder is not rotating around my body in the down swing. To overcome it I hv to allow my left elbow to bend at address and on the back swing I feel that my left arm collapse loosing distance. Alternatively, I will hv to get my right side come in. I am not sure which is a preferred move. Hope you can direct me your videos that may help. Thanks for the reply!

Watch the great Mickey Wright in this video as she pulls the club away. You can see the club head lagging behind her hands ever so slightly. There's no way she could do this with a super-firm grip pressure. Also, you can see that her light grip pressure allows for a LOT of lag on the down swing. No wonder she could pound the ball and Ben Hogan was envious of her swing. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6uieK2DkrC6eKM.html
