I watched the first 2.5 minutes, paused to go work on my thing for 10 minutes, and came back to finish the video. Thanks for the real-time inspiration! And I hear ya on the sickness. I have a school-aged daughter and my wife is a teacher in a different school district. I get to enjoy a variety of illnesses imported from all over!

"See the dot, eat the dot". Pac man taught me that. Don't look at the whole board, don't get overwhelmed by the end goal, just see the dot, eat the dot.

The point is you can’t easily plan 10 steps ahead in real life because each accomplished step presents you with new opportunities that weren’t visible before, so focussing on anything other than current position + 1 is kinda wasted energy :)

This method I've been using since 2009 has been a game-changer for me. I've used it to learn all sorts of things - from playing the piano, ukulele, guitar to getting promoted in the military, going to college, and learning new languages. I've even used it to get a new job and earn promotions there, as well as to learn programming and move to new places. The way I make this method work is by pairing it with to-do lists. For each goal or task, I create a separate list and break it down into the smallest possible steps. Then, I focus on completing those little steps each day, whether it's something related to a big goal or just everyday tasks. I keep these in a journal format which I also use to keep notes of things that come up day-to-day and to write down new ideas or goals that I think of. This approach helps me avoid feeling overwhelmed by trying to tackle big things all at once. Instead, I focus on making progress by completing small tasks and knocking them off my list. It feels great to see the progress I've made and to know that I'm one step closer to achieving my goals.

Me too, perfect timing. I have 3 massive house projects that all need to be done NOW (yesterday, actually, or last month or last year 🤢) but because nobody - including me - respects my time they’re all stalled. Thanks, Craig

My favorite metaphor for this is "eating the elephant". As in: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So I keep trying to break down big problems into smaller bite-sized problems. Take enough little bites, you eventually eat the elephant-size problem.

This is prety much my main bit of productivity advice as well: A little is better than nothing. That's my mantra. I always have a lot of ambitious creative projects going, as well as a lot of work stuff and general adulting stuff that needs to get done. And while I'm a planner more than a pantser (I'm one of those who tend to have the overall structure done before I do anything) I 100% always want to find ways to split the Big Task into little tasks. Preferrably tasks that can be done in 10-30 minutes. I tend to get blocked sometimes by thinking about how much work I have to do, and this really helps. If my brain recoils at the very thought of grading 30 student projects, I'll grade 5. Or one. See? 29 to go. Less than when I started. That's progress! And as long as there's *progression*, the Big Task will eventually be Done.

Thanks for reminder.. I use a kind of similar thing when cleaning up or decluttering .. just start in one part of a room - then just move clockwise till its finished, then next room. Soon gets done and I’m not worrying about the bigger job. Might try a similar approach with my projects.

This is such good advice. I've got stuck in big-picture planning so many times, often getting myself overwhelmed and giving up before I start. Lately it's been helping me to check myself and say "what is the next actionable step toward this thing," and if I can't answer myself then I know I'm not looking at it simply enough.

Been watching you since the first apartment. I know you! (That sounded less creepy in my head.) How much do I know you? Lore drop: I know that you are actually a clone of Craig-with-a-Wig making you a Craig-with-a-Wig-without-a-Wig. This means Craig-with-a-Wig is the original Craig. He created clones to do his house chores because he was too depressed with his existential crisis to do them himself. Eventually, he created a KZfaq Craig clone to generate income so he can continue to sulk in the kitchen. After years of cloning, Craig-with-a-Wig was able to create clones that thought he was a malfunctioned clone and they felt too bad for him to try and send him to the alligator pit. Thus Craig-with-a-Wig is able to escape the cyclical cycle of capitalism to deal with his existential crisis to someday finally come to terms by make his signature sign-off fake smile into a genuine one.

Who do I talk to? Who do I see? I subscribed to a weekly mimeo-zine "The Craig 'Zine" which was assumingly produced by a dude named Craig Benzine. I paid for the weekly mimeo-zine (a magazine produced on a mimeograph machine for all who might be lacking in this knowledge) waaaay back in 1975. I bought a lifetime subscription for a dollar ninety-five and I received mailings until approximately February of 1992, when the paper refused to be seen at my door anymore. So who do I see about my issue? Greg Benson? That's seems unlikely since the 'zine wasn't called "The Greg 'Son." Although, thinking back, the dude's name might have been Ben Craigzine, and then I'm way out of line asking for help on this particular multi-verse timeline.

Heyyyy! I just started doing this! Recently I just decided I want to the learn the ukelele (at a play-around-the-campfire ability level, not pro) and knowing how I am, dedicated myself to 10 min a day - most of the time it turns into much longer! I started bringing it with me when I was say, cleaning up the kitchen, while I waited for a phone call, etc. so it would be there and I could just grab it even for 5 strums. It's def working. Yay me.
