Im into the imperfect farmhouse pieces for my own home. I keep wanting to try to flip a piece to sell. Love your channel! So much good information. Much appreciate your recommendation for the Dewalt sander. Questions- 1) Do you like your paint/blend method or this stain method better for top surfaces? 2) You recommended Fusion, Lilly Moon, Country chic paints to me for painting my dresser. My pieces are bare wood now. Would you ever paint bare wood with a Sherwin Williams or Bear paint and use Fusion, etc for pieces that are not bare wood? Ty. PS Your hair color is rockin’!
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Of course! Thats a hard one, I love both, it depends on the piece, the material of the piece and the look I am going for - that is why I would choose one over the other, but I honestly love doing it both ways and always will I am sure! No if I am painting over bare wood, I would prime my piece first and then use one of these recommended paints. I would not recommend using a paint base coat under your other paint. Awe - thank you so much! Same hairstyle forever, but I am always changing up the color game! :)

Your perfectionism shines through time after time. I even have a notebook strictly for "Born in a Barn" Kim, the two stains you used on the top,,,as I read more, I found out they were Wooden Bottle and Natural Cork. Looks beautiful! What do you do if the tabletop wood color is uneven? I've already stripped the top and did some sanding. Now I want to use Lilly moon gel stain in reclaimed wood but I am worried about seeing the dark wood sections. 0:00
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 6 ай бұрын
So if your going over bare wood and you want a nice even finish - you need to sand off all existing finish as the stain (although buildable and has good coverage) will not cover completely. Your other option is to paint and then stain on top if you don’t want to do a complete sanding of the surface

@BorninaBarnBoutique

These stains have good buildable coverage, it’s hard to say without seeing the piece but if your concerned about the orange coming though - seal with a shellac to prevent bleed through or do a paint wash prior to neutralize the orange

Alright Kimberly, I’m going to add this blended gel stain technique to my repertoire! I’ve watched your videos, and just want to confirm that ANY water based gel stain will work (like General Finishes). I assume it’s the ‘gel’ aspect that makes this possible? Not all gel stains are the same and actually GF doesn’t have a water based gel stain, they have their water based stain and their gel stain (oil based) and their water based stain is good but sets up super quick making it harder to work with blending

Hey Lilly I really like this. I commented yesterday on another video of yours. With a quick response back from you. Thanks for that. Now this video could be a better option for the hardwood floors I have sanded to the bare wood. I put a polyurethane on just the bare wood to see what it would look like. The stains I was questioning were fine. When the polyurethane dried it looks good. Except I wanted the floors to be lighter in color. I also tested the lightest stain I could find. After this video I really like the light tone color you created. I think if I could mix it up a bit and have light to medium light stains on different planks scattered evenly on the floor. So my question/concern is the room is about 250 sq. ft. How would you work these stains so I keep an even look. Would you start in one spot and divide it in sections? If a section is down and starting to dry before I start an adjacent section will the dried section and the fresh section blend together? Also it being a floor I want to top coat with minwax polyurethane for wood floors. Will the stain and polyurethane bond together? I really love this look and color. It's what I imagined I wanted when I got this old house. So any suggestions on doing this video type. Or do you have other type of staining like this for larger area? Thanks in advanced
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique Жыл бұрын
All great questions, I would suggest a one on one with me where I can work with on a project basis like this and answer all the questions - which I understand you have a lot of them. What I will tell you simply any water based stain - gel or otherwise will set very quickly and so working in sections is best. If you use an oil based poly vs water keep in mind that will amber or yellow as well

This piece turned out so pretty! Am I correct that Lilly Moon so far is only available by mail in Northern CA? I’d really like to try it but have a hard time judging colors off websites. I wanted to ask about hinges - if I’m going to repaint painted hinges, do I need to sand all the previous paint off? Or can I just sand smooth, prime, and repaint? Thanks for the video!
@BorninaBarnBoutique

Thank you! No Lilly Moon is available throughout the US and can be ordered through their website, there are some retailers that carry it as well just check your area to see if you have one nearby. No, I give them a good sand - I don't completely remove the entire original finish.

I literally just said to my husband a few minutes ago that I went backwards today with a project I am working on due to the yellowish look of a 6 feet table top I sanded to bare wood and then put a clear finish (white owl salve). I don't like it at all! I'm pretty new to this so I tried to fix it and made an even bigger mess. Love your finished look of the top with the mixed gels. I can't tell though if I can see the wood grain or if the two tone is actually the two different colors not blended. Also, even with the water based stain, you only sand to 180, not 220?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
You can totally see the wood grain, I only did one coat of each and it is really sheer. No finer than 180, any finer and it can cause an issue with how the stain imparts to the wood for an even finish.

@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique Жыл бұрын
Hmm… if you misted and applied like I do I’m surprised - it applies typically so nice. It depends what you went to do. It is water based so if you want to paint over it you won’t have to sand - if you want to restain - then yes - unless you want to add to it and try again.
