Peter sounds right at home in that genre. I hope “you’ll hear it” will discuss some of the “grips” that are often used to move those gospel infections around. There seems to be a consistent shift back and forth between clusters and spread voicings in that style.

Overhead camera would be nice too. But I guess with the MIDI image there wouldn't be enough space. Maybe either/or Peter/Adam with both overhead camera and MIDI image whenever either one is playing. But then when they both play...???

If you wanna get your groove on with this kind of music as a pianist listening to guitar players is the way to go. To learn how to mix your major pentatonic with your minor pentatonic, guitar players have it going on. Type into KZfaq pentatonic riffs and you'll get no piano videos, you'll get guitar ones, and really good ones. They have the language you're looking for in this department. Learned much from them.

I got a lot of mileage out of this episode. I wish Peter had explained the gospel type sus chords at the end though, because he uses them beautifully in the video, e.g. going down from C to the Bb sus to an F/A or to E augmented to F. Those non-diatonic sus things are definitely something I incorporated into my playing.

Love this podcast. Listen to it all the time. After viewing this episode, got me thinkin' and hopin' (and prayin' and...sorry not that pop song) you might be able to explain the last 20 seconds of Billy Joel's NY State of Mind....like the progression, the chord qualities, the voicings, the theory, the whole shabanng, the whole empanada, the whole kittencaboodle. Thanks in advance. Love listening to you guys! Be well, stay safe.

Great stuff...I noticed something unusual with the keyboard on screen however...it occasionally misses half steps played...weird. For example you played an FMaj 7 chord at one point with the seventh on top and it showed an F instead of an E. I noticed it with the same note in reverse earlier and thought I might be crazy but then it happened again.

I have gone on a long journey into this kind of playing. First thing I discovered was there aren't a lot of pianists to listen to, unless you can deal with Billy Joel and the like. Then it struck me; in jazz we listen to sax players for the language. So who has the language for this kind of music: guitar players. Try it now on KZfaq: look for blues guitar and you'll find so much language to copy on piano. Then try blues piano. All you get are those Boogie Woogie tutorials. :(

@@jacobseymour7221 I suppose, I know what you mean, it's not really bluesy stuff...I just do think that his writing is phenomenal and foundation for this space between jazz/maybe rnb and pop, and some of the lines and voicings and generally just the progressions that can be found in his work are so unique and fun.

I don't get why every time Peter starts to play, Adam starts (or just keeps on) talking! It very often happens when I watch these podcast videos and I've only watched 4 minutes of this one and it's happened TWICE. Peter tries to talk about, explain and then demonstrate the concept that is supposed to be the theme of the show, and as soon as he starts to play, Adam jumps in, interrupts and starts making his own point and effectively grabs the spotlight. It's weird and incredibly annoying. I've been holding myself back from saying this for several years now, but it seems to need to be said. This is an old video, so maybe it's better these days. I hope so. I got to where I stopped watching the podcasts because of this. I wish Adam would just enjoy Peter some more, he's seems like a super fun and humble guy to be around. But it seems to me Adam tries too hard to prove he deserves to be in the conversation. WOW, another couple of minutes and Adam jumps in and interrupts when Peter is demonstrating an idea he just introduced about playing melodically and then throwing in some jazz harmonies. Why does Adam feel so compelling to interrupt Peter when he's playing the piano? It's maddening. Peter keeps playing, I think hoping Adam will get the message, but Adam barrels on, and again Peter STOPS PLAYING.... :-(
