Starting my web comic in 2020! I’ve been working SO HARD to improve my art and I’m confident in my story telling! The thing that stresses me out the most though is making friends....I have a few close friends and they’re amazing. But talking and interacting with other creators is a struggle for me. I deal with paranoia and I have trust issues.

"Making friends" is easy to say. 1. Sometimes they assume that you're sucking up to them for popularity and all that even when you genuinely just want to know them. Their popularity can be a reason you want to know them, but it doesn't have to be what you want from knowing them. 2. Sometimes they aren't interested because you're don't have as much numbers as they do (yes, sometimes they say "i interact more with my friends so don't be salty" but like with that mindset how tf did they have new friends? Their friends have as much numbers as they do too. How did they get those numbers without engaging with the audience who aren't their so-called "friends"?) unless they think your work is good enough. Keep talking to them either way? That goes back to my first point. It feels as if you have to sell your hard work for friendship alone. At the same time, it kind of feels like you're using friendship for exposure. I don't know, this whole thing with "making friends" seems complicated. I'm not criticizing. I'm saying that I have this problem, and I don't know what to do.
@aoinim
@aoinim 4 жыл бұрын
You won't have one if you don't try to be positive about it.. Yea there are ppl like them who cares about numbers, but there are a lot of nice artists out there too. If it doesn't work out, it's not your fault. Let them go and keep trying. The ones who wants to be friends with you will stay. You won't know if you don't try ^^ good luck

I think you're assuming too much about a person's mindset when they react negatively (or don't react at all) to you trying to make friends with them. People can have any reason for not cliquing with you if you reach out to them, and it could have nothing to do with you as a person/artist. Most people don't trust strangers they have never met in person outside of their network. They may have built their friend network out of people they met at conventions or people they have worked with professionally. Most people don't just "friend" random strangers, but people they are familiar with in some way, either through their work publicly ("numbers") or through friends of friends. I got this advice from a video of Bobby Chiu's on KZfaq, but to summarize his advice on building a network/making art friends: Creating a relationship where you are trying to suck up to someone to move yourself ahead sucks, and isn't a good way to go about this. What you should do is find a common ground. People like it when you are interested in what they do, not what they can do for you. So show your genuine interest in their work. For example: Find something about their work that you like and want to see in your own work and ask them if they have any advice on how they did it. If they respond, they are open to you. If not, move on. In any case, you don't really need professional art friends to solve some problems in comics. All you need is people interested in comics. A lot of times just having someone who is able to see your work from the outside and say the obvious can be a huge help. So don't just limit your friend prospects to popular people with numbers.

The cat pictures idea really works. I started a TikTok account to promote my art, struggled to get more than 100 views on a post, then posted one video about a rescued betta fish, and it got over 4K views and several hundred likes in 2 days. I posted an update about the fish, and broke 1,000 followers and 40k views within 2 weeks. I decided to do an art giveaway/sweepstakes thing to celebrate 1k, the sweepstakes hasn’t even ended yet, and I’m already over 3k followers, several hundred thousand views, 60k likes (account-wide), and climbing. It was irritating at first that my account blew up over a fish, but I’ve already gotten more traffic through my social media, business website, and commission requests in 2 weeks than I have in the past year, and I’m grateful for the recognition finally.

@calicodavis5823
@calicodavis5823 5 жыл бұрын
Comics need to be some multiple of 4 pages long, because the sheets are folded down the middle, which means 1 sheet ends up being 4 pages. 20 pages is pretty typical for most comic books, but you can go as much as 32 pages if you want, though that will cost more for printing. My comic is 24 pages, for instance. There are a lot of printers you can go with. I went with Greko (www.grekoprinting-comixwellspring.com/comics-saddle-stitch-staple-binding/) and was very happy with them. They have a calculator on their site to help you figure out costs.

These seem like good tips. I hear a lot of the same old advice about how to market webcomics, but it seems like one of the best pieces of advice is just to keep up with the changes of social media. I think some types of comics can market themselves better than others, like the ones where each page is a complete and compelling piece of work on its own.

A list is an online comic index, like a directory or collection of different webcomics. You can find them by googling "webcomics list" and different indexes will come up. Some of them specialize in specific types of comics to help readers find what they want (for instance Belfry specializes in furry titles). Most if not all are free and easy to submit your comic to (they have submission forms) or to use as a reader looking for titles. Hope this helps ^_^

Where exactly do you even find comic writers? I'm really bad at fleshing out my stories on a script level - Individual scenes are fine, especially emotionally charged ones, but everything else comes across more as a summery than a story. Honestly if i could hand off a plot outline with some lore and character notes and have somebody else hammer out the rest while I handle the art my comics would probably be a million times better.

@@Screenseph Cool! Don't worry, i'm not what you'd call a pro just yet either - though these are comics I want to post to taptastic once they get going. theres actually two that i'm working on, one that I started designing as a 'practice' comic that I've put more practical work into but the plot is still pretty in the air since I have a bad habit of making the plots of my stories boil down to 'reveal back story dramatically'. The main problem seems to be every time I try to give the main character a goal it ends up being to vague to have a distinct quantifiable 'win condition' and I don't want the story to be a meandering slice of life that ends up puttering out when I get bored. The other I have a lot less practical work done (no finalized character designs and such) but I have a much better grasp of the overall plot as well as planned goal oriented progression and a planned ending. The only thing is my quality of art is going to have to go up dramatically to match the story and it will also take a lot of research to get the setting right. PM me for my contact info

So they play along not knowing how each other feels. It’s called polar opposites. I’ll start actually drawing out my scenes around July. I hope to be finished with it by the end of January as the last chapter. Mostly because one of my characters name is January. But right now I’m doing an easy kids book with the same character. Almost done with drawing it out too! Finally I have two major webcomics I want to do. I’ll be done when I finish all four stories.

Allocate yourself a budget for the comic's artwork, save up, place an ad on sites like deviantart (job section), zwol, facebook (comic groups),... Use a secondary email to avoid spam and preferably pay through Paypal.

I want to build an audience for a webtoon I'm making, but I'm the most timid, shy, socially awkward, introverted person in existence. I have no idea how to even begin trying to be active on social media. I've never really done social media, and though I'm on a few sites (DeviantArt, Artstation... that's about it, ngl) I just post something every few months and disappear for the intervals in between, without talking to anyone. I know the solution is: Suck it up and JUST DO IT. That's easier said than done, though. ..help me lol

hey, i know this is probably more of a comment to vent with but i do have some advice if you’d like to hear it. you’re already clearly aware of the first step (just do it), so i won’t belabor the point. here’s some advice on how to actually interact with someone once you’ve readied yourself: 1. compliments are always a good starting point, especially when talking to artists! creatives LOVE being told what works in their work, so for the first few comments/asks/messages don’t be afraid to play it safe and just tell them what you like. after those... 2. ask questions! about their work is the best course, because they’re easy to intermingle with compliments. “oh, the lightning is so cool here, how did you do it?” stuff like that! it’ll let the artist engage with you on common ground and you can easily have conversations about it. don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or further info, i assure they likely don’t mind. but as you build up a rapport you can also start asking them about non-art things. similarly... 3. after establishing yourself as a regular viewer, engage with them on non-art posts too. if they post about having a bad day offer your sympathy and let them know you’ll lend an ear if they want to talk about it. if they post about pets talk about that too! don’t be afraid of being a bother by commenting on all sorts of posts they make! they’ll most likely be pleased to have people willing to hear about themself as well as their work. 4. i mean this very kindly, but you SHOULD NOT put yourself down in the early stages to talking to another artist like you did in this comment. i see it all the time where a fan will send an ask along the lines of “oh your art is so good but i can barely draw.” you may mean this as a compliment, but trust me, it’s more uncomfortable for the artist than anything. after all, what should the artist even say to that? thanks? im sorry my art makes you feel bad? basically, before you send a comment or ask to someone, imagine they’re a person on the street and you’re about to walk up and say it to them. would you tell a stranger/acquaintance this on the street? no? then reword it, because while you might be very familiar with the artist, they probably aren’t with you. overall, be GENUINE. don’t say things you don’t mean, and try to be personable. just do your best to be friendly and forward, and people will respond in kind! you can do it!!!

@@katiebirdie7868 Thanks so much for taking the time to write all of that! Those are all really good pieces of advice. I'll definitely try them out. Also, now that you point it out, I do hate when people do that thing in #4 (ex: "My art sucks- yours it awesome!"), so I'll avoid doing that from now on haha. While I was venting a little bit, I was legitimately asking for advice, so I appreciate the response. It seems like common sense stuff (just be nice and put yourself out there!), but my brain likes to overcomplicate things so it really does help to talk it through with someone else.

@@dreamingblue3939 i'm glad to be of help :)!! it's really easy to complicate seemingly simple ideas when you have an active imagination, so i totally get it! sometimes you need clarification on things that other people say should be obvious, and that's perfectly fine. people's brains all work differently, for better or for worse. the best way i personally have found to reassure myself that i'm not annoying someone is to imagine that someone else messaged me the thing i'm about message the other person. it reminds me that people are people, and most of them like talking to others :). good luck!!

@@dreamingblue3939 also!! i almost forgot to talk about this point but: don't be afraid to try and reconnect to people you haven't spoken to in a while! yes, it's frightening, and yes, you will feel guilty, but i promise that even if they're mad most people are more willing to work with you than you might think! as long as you apologize, explain that you abandoning conversations is a flaw you're trying to work on, and do your best to improve, those people will likely be understanding. again, it's all about imagining the situation from your perspective: if certain friends i lost contact with tried to reconnect with me after this long, i'd be thrilled! people are kinder in social situations than most people imagine, it's just that to prove that fact you have to put yourself out there, which is hard when you think in worst-case scenarios because your brain overthinks. worst case is that they are still mad at you for it, but so what? you'll end up with the same thing you had before: no contact between the two of you, but this time you know at least for sure their feelings about it instead of having to torture yourself with "what ifs?". there are always more friends to make, so a few burned bridges won't completely isolate you from the world if you're willing to build new ones to new lands. this metaphor may have gotten away from me.

I can't say it is adequate yet, but I'm very grateful we are still exist in some platforms. Hopefully with your video, we could apply some insights and grow more and more. And yeah consistency is quite hard sometimes, we're working on it! Thank you once again! I have a question, I don't know if its stupid or not, but this is all new to me and I've been working on my story for my comic for years. Would posting up a chapter per month good or is it better to do a page or two per week??
@loupaladdm3468
@loupaladdm3468 5 жыл бұрын
Actually you can ask your audience what they prefer. Personally I stop reading comics that only upload page per page. It makes me forget what happens. I like waiting for a good chapter better. (Cause just reading : "the heroine takes her bag", then next week "she goes out", it can easily turn boring. But to each their choice, you should see what is more popular with your readers
@SpookyScaryGaming
@SpookyScaryGaming 5 жыл бұрын
@@loupaladdm3468 That is very true. It can be a little annoying to upload one page at a time, but if you have other stuff going on I understand. I personally find you get more impact when you read an entire chapter all together. But I know most webcomic (at least ones I've read) were page by page and I often forget, like what you said, but from time to time you get reminded of it because you see that artist and/or writer post something and you're like "oh thats right". I'm hoping that's not being rude to the creator, I still will support their work 100% but I just need to be reminded of it. But I have also heard that a chapter by chapter thing for a web comic be "too much", so thats why I was asking if page by page or chapter by chapter would be best. Sorry if this dragged out too long :/
@loupaladdm3468
@loupaladdm3468 5 жыл бұрын
No problem, I also tend to write like... way too much x) Another thing you could do is post half a chapter every two weeks : it's more complete than just one page, and readers are reminded more often of your story. But once again I suggest you to have a poll with your readers :) But, what I think you could do, to start, is complete a few chapters (at least 3, if you're patient enough 4-5 ?) before posting anything. Like that you post one chapter a week or so, and when you've reached your the end of your finished chapters, you can tell you will now post once a month, or every two weeks, or every day... Well what you choosed to. That way people who start will know what your comics really look like and might be more attentive to what happens next Sorry for the broken english ^-^"

@katiebirdie7868

no worries, that’s a kind of social media creator-specific phrase. he basically just meant you should pitch you comic to your followers whenever you can, i.e. posting when a new page is out on your social media + an evening/next day reminder, posting little doodles of the characters or sneak peeks of a sketched-out page in between updates, letting people know you have a store, or reblogging any initial post you made explaining the plot of the comic every month or so. just making sure followers old and new know about it! you can really do it any way you want, as long as you aren’t hijacking other people’s post to do it like commenting to promote your comic on someone else post about their own work-that’s super looked down upon in any creative field, and will brand you with a bad reputation. just keep it on your own accounts and it’ll be fine!

My best piece of advice is to work on you're art, this might not apply that much to comdey series, but anything that has a story and is fantasy and sometimes real stuff to needs good art like this UNSOUNDED I could never really get into the plot because the author didn't really do that good of a job introducing my into the world, but the main character was fun enough and the main reason i kept reading is the art. Start with a style that's similar to manga then evolve it into your personal style because to stand out from the crowd you have to make a good first impression and high quality art is the best way to get a readers attention, also do before publishing it I'd recommend using novel factory for the story skeleton, and creating a bunch of chapters ahead of time, release a 54 page or around that line first chapter but make sure you have 30 pages of story, left then release shorter chapters weekly making sure you always will be able to release a chapter without worrying about deadlines

I guess my question is where I should start looking for lists and comic hosting websites, or bigger companies that do good jobs promoting stuff. I also thought Webtoons had a thing where you weren't allowed to post something that you'd already posted somewhere else? So like if I wanted to post my comic there, but I also wanted to post it on another website or social media, then I couldn't really do that...? Am I wrong about that?

1:51 posting at least once a week is great for algorithms tbh but if you’re not using a queue system it can be hard to do. What I do personally is upload large batches of pages to hosting sites I use that let you schedule posts and schedule them so they post 1-2 pages a week so I don’t have to post for like.... months honestly. Queue systems are life savers if you want to regularly post pages. Also, in my experience, while some people will drop off if you don’t post in a while, plenty more will still stick around for months while you’re on hiatus and be excited for your return. TLDR: use a queue system where the website posts for you at schedules times if you want to post weekly, queues are honestly a blessing

I'm still trying to figure that one out myself as well but here's a few tips that helped me in my experience: . Get your online/real life friends to follow your social media and have them reblog/retweet your content. . If you want another artist to view your work, complement their works, give them feedback and interact with them . Promote yourself in other people's artist promotion threads . Don't spam your art on unrelated tweets or posts, this could turn off potential fans . Try commissioning other artists/voice actors I don't work in the industry but I have earned some followers with my tips, I wish you the best of luck!
