Most people, liberals especially, are so "compassionate", they think dogs are human, and treat them accordingly. Yeah, I'm talking to: people who "dress" their dogs, push them around in strollers when they can walk on their own, refuse to let them get dirty, "baby" talk them, and the WORST - VEGANS for feed their dogs no meat diets.

When people come over, I always tell them “I know it sounds mean, but ignore the dog. Once he’s calm he gets attention.” If they can’t help themselves and start giving him attention before he’s chilled out I’ll remind them “Remember, we’re ignoring him.” They think I’m a terrible person sometimes, but hey I have a well behaved dog - which is worth it! 😂

You are a champion in my book. I try not to be the terrible person but if it means that my dog is going to benefit from it later down the line and will make it easier to live with then as dog owners and trainers, this is what needs to be done. It's those same people who treat their dogs like human kids that will always tell me that my dog is obedient, calm, chill, sweet, intelligent etc. so do what you have to because we live with our dogs at the end of the day, they don't.

@@willgaukler8979 facts, if you treat your interactions with your puppy as training sessions and have a controlled routine in place, you mitigate the chances of most bad behaviour. Your best chances at reducing most bad Behaviors is to teach them sit and wait at a young age. Make sure that you have a release command to eat and then you just have to shape and polish the rest. I find heel walking with puppies to be my biggest challenge but we get it right eventually.

Another way is to teach the dog a command specifically for jumping/hugging and only reward when you ask. It worked for my parents lab and for years it was my dads favorite party trick. We would just tap our shoulders and our lab would jump and put his paws on our waist as if giving us a big hug, it was super cute, but he would only do it when we asked. Miss that dog so much. Rest in peace the best boy.

I take it one step further. Once the dog realizes that they can't jump I ask my company to go and sit down in the living room. I then walk in and sit with my dog away from the company. Once the dog is relaxed I give a "go see" command and quietly walk over to the company. They then learn that they have to defer to me for the command

My oldest sister came over once when we had just gotten our lab, she immediately started trying to get him to jump on her and I immediately put a stop to that. I was determined to never let him think he could do that, he was going to be too big. I was right in my thinking, he wasn’t a heavy dog, only around 75 pounds, but he was lean and he was tall and very strong. He never jumped on anyone. The second behavior in this was one of his only faults, and that was because I was never allowed to teach him different and frustrated the crap out of me, I was constantly being undermined by the rest of my family and so I gave up. He was perfect with just me. Later on my mom started getting mad at him for being wild and then also me for “allowing it” and I’d just roll my eyes and take him with me because it was her fault for him getting so bad. Now, I will never allow anyone to undermine my training again.

Not a bad idea.. way better than what I used. The female pup that we gave away from a litter was returned to us 6 months later. Backstory-- the litter was a one-off planned litter.. and the woman who took the puppy gave it back bc when we gave her the puppy we let her know we would rather that is she ever wanted to get rid of the puppy to return her to us rather than taking her to the pound. Anyway.. the pup had been left in the lady's backyard with another dog for company and rarely got to interact with humans.. so was very excited to see them and would jump up on them. The lady's daughter had moved in with her and had a small child of her own.. which this behavior was dangerous to the child so that is the reason she returned her. The pup would jump up on me when I returned from work.. and being a 60-70 lb dog this was not an issue for me, but for others it might be.. so I stopped her from doing this in 3 days by simply placing my hand, palm forward, in front of her as she jumped and she would literally bash her nose into my palm when jumping up. This was like 7 or 8 years ago.. and to this day she will not jump up. Of course.. being an 'inside dog' gave her plenty of human interaction so she is no longer overexcited by the presence of humans.. but she and her brother both howl when I go outside without them or they hear my car door when I get home lol.

For me, 1 month of saying DOWN, and gently handling them to force them in to a sitting or standing position on all 4 paws worked just fine. Now no matter how much my friends squeal with joy and dote on them, they won't jump up unless the guest taps the center of their chest. Then they know its OK to jump up. The only person who doesn't get this treatment is me when they are excited, because they know I don't mind. My Female golden will climb right in to people laps for snuggles if they want her to. My male.... not so much. He just likes butt and ear scratches.
