back when i was training, i used to go to the homeless shelter in town and gave free haircuts to as many people as i could. i would go once a week and get like 15-20 cuts in a day, good experience and they’re all grateful.

I cut my own hair consistently. Like i was addicted to cutting my own hair sometimes i would look in the mirror the next day and be like “nah I can do that better” and try and fix it. My mom used to get annoyed at how often i cut my hair cause every time she walked by she hears my little Walmart clipper buzzing. Then one of my teammates let me cut his hair for free and it took like 2 hours. Then i posted the finished haircut on Instagram and I got a few more people to come but it kept growing from there.

Free cuts across the board. I definitely wasn’t at the level of talent I am at now. But I was confident. I knew all I needed was 1 shot and they would be back.

I’ve been cutting my friends hair lately, I’m not that bad , just trying to get better at fading . Every time they ask for a Fade , I come back to one of your videos and watch then take action lol. I just can’t wait til my fading get down pack !💯

I started by cutting my nephew and then gained confidence to cut my own hair. I also learned by not using guards. I felt like I mastered fading without guards which made my transition to using guards easier. My era was before KZfaq, but when KZfaq came around I learned more about sheer cutting and using the razor.

Fading without guards really does help the visualizing of a fade man. To learn that way first is tough. And yea the advent of KZfaq seemed to really help the industry. Thanks for sharing bro!

Hi kevv. I grew up with a cosmetologist who inspired me but my dad didn't think it was a good idea to become a barber. Then i started watching youtube vic the barber and Mc barber. Which lead to you bro. Intern igniting the passion all over again for the barber industry. So now I'm in barber school as an older Barber student.

Vic the barber is probably my biggest influences in this industry. Him, ricardo the barber and a few others. Glad you found your way to this industry. It's never too late to start, must have taken a bunch of courage to do that man. Happy for you!

THANKS ALOT KEV! I NEEDED THIS MAN 😭! My first haircut was on my father, he was like go ahead! I was very nervous and fidgety that I only did a 3 with the grain with no line up. He was very glad for it and encouraged other people to come later after hearing I cut it for him. I've since gotten better, way better but I've only cut people close to me, not those who are complete strangers, So this video was for me!! Just got to be confident! Keep them content coming Kev! We're learning!

My first cut wasn’t a bad cut. Actually did a pretty decent “even all over” w/sharp line up on a friend who rarely got his haircut. Another One of my friends was feeling it, but didn’t trust me until he saw me cut my own hair. I rock bald fades and when I went to the shop it’s what I got so I decided I would give myself a bald fade.....🤦🏾‍♂️I made the guide line cut the bulk but scared myself because I forgot what to do next. So I didn’t go to the barbershop I walked around with a “soup bowl” hair cut with a line! (I’ll send you the pic) I was kind of indifferent with my feelings because i knew it looked bad but it showed others I was trying. I got two more people who wanted me to cut their hair from seeing my jacked up cut....🤷🏾‍♂️ why not I need the practice! Long story short, I got better on my own head, graduated from temp fades to doing an almost perfect bald fade. It’s like Ivan said, you gotta show people you’re serious and when you take you serious others will too.
@KevvThaw
@KevvThaw 5 жыл бұрын
Haha my man said a “soup bowl cut”. But that’s it bro, you’re right in the money when you said it didn’t matter because you were trying. You didn’t care what people thought because you knew where you were goin.

I remember my first hair cut was on my little brother 😊 I had just enrolled in Cosmetology School and itI was a year round school.... meaning you could enroll in any time of the year ...AND they had just ended the hair cut class so I had to wait till the end of the Cosmetology course to learn Hair cut s so I would take my little brothers to the barbershop and stand there besides them and watched how they cut their hair anddddd so I started practicing with them with not even taking the class yet and I started practicing more and more with my cousins and their friends and I took off from there .....I’ve been licensed since 1995 and I have been owning my own salon since 2000 becoming a Cosmetologist and now a salon owner is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made... I love what I do.....😊

Love this! The hunger was clearly there from before you even took the class. Inspiring story. Did you feel any pressure to go to do something outside of the beauty industry or were you pretty hard set on it from the beginning?

Funny you ask ☺️.... I had just graduated from High School it was Summer and my career of study was going to be a Journalist .... I was at home watching tv and I saw a Cosmetologist School commercial so I decided to call to get information and a tour of the school I enrolled in school that same day of the tour and the rest is history 😊best decision I’ve ever made and don’t regret not being a Journalist

I'm a cosmetologist and I hardly cut kinky hair but I did yesterday and it took me forever to do a medium fade. Men cuts usually take me 20 minutes or less and I was on this guy head for like a hour. I'm use to working with alot of straight hair. While doing the cut I used 1 1/2, 1, 1/2, 0 in that order. I was brushing the hair alot and it was very coarse and dry. The cut was looking fairly good but not as great as my straight short cuts look. The problem came when I had to blend. I felt like I was missing a step. My blending is great with straight hair though and I used the same techniques besides brushing alot and going over the cut multiple times. Then I decided to use the corner of the Clippers to blend it more better.Do you know what I mean. Do you have any tips on what to do next time or how to increase speed and other techniques?

Im super intrested in the idea of barbering, i like the style of it, culture and community and i think it would be a enjoyable job and career. So my question is how did you get your start? Where did your passion come from and how did you practice cutting before cutting a real person?

Today was the first time I cut someone’s hair . When I was creating the guide line I made it crooked and I stopped. I didn’t want to go further because I didn’t know how to fix it so I took my client to the barber shop and they fixed him up how do I fix a crooked guide like like do I just keep on going or do I just give up
@KevvThaw

Today?! That’s wild bro. And no last thing you should do is give up. You should have kept going. Hair grows back, wasted time doesn’t. So use the time to learn, just stay consistent and go got this bro!

Hugo Campos bro I know what u mean, just visualise a line and slowly reach that line each time you stroke. it’s better to be “under” the line on your first attempt and slowly perfecting your stroke on the second one.. I hope you get what I’m saying?

Comfidence is key when starting, wanting to learn and educate yourself on haircuts is what i did, and when people see that people gravitate towards you. thats what worked for me! im only 17 and started last year, watching videos has helped by a ton. I started with free haircuts and raised my prices as i started getting better and post your work ! people will notice. Im only charging 15$ for cuts and trying to work towards my other goals and waiting to start college soon.. check out my work on instagram @rdtheonly and keep up the work kev these videos are educating me and others more than you think! 💈

Straight like that man. And I think that’s a good point as well. “People gravitate to you” that means they like you as a person. If a person doesn’t like you as a person you’ll have a hard time convincing him to give you a cut
