How to glaze an oil painting - demonstration

Күн бұрынIs it possible to transform a painting in a few minutes? A large oil painting in maybe less than an hour? This is exactly what I am attempting to do in this demonstration of glazing techniques. Sometimes the three dimensional shape of my subject gets lost when I am concentrating on smaller details, especially when painting fur. Glazing is one of the quickest ways to add shadows to revive that three dimensional illusion that I intended in the first place, add pure colours and change the general colour cast of a painting. In this demonstration I use 3 transparent colours namely phthalo blue, burnt sienna and raw sienna. I use them almost like primary colours: burnt sienna as red, raw sienna as yellow and phthalo blue as blue. If you enjoy this video please let me know. Thanks so much for sharing this Christo. I think glazing really makes a great contribution to the 3D look of a wildlife painting like this. I am so inspired to change my glazing colours from what I have been using to the colours you are using. Great painting by the way. I can't wait to see the final result

Like I mentioned in my reply to one of your other comments - the time lapse is of a similar but much smaller painting. I love doing small studies because I feel less pressure to try and produce a masterpiece - I find them very relaxing and I play around with all kinds of techniques that I can apply to other paintings in the future. When I do a small study I am often able to see if it will work for a larger painting or not.

Thank you Christo. I've watched other glazing videos where the artist doesn't explain the process as in depth as you have here. The transformation is astounding! Do you have a video on the start of this painting (time-lapse)? I'm completely fascinated!

I also find it fascinating and very rewarding to use glazing in my paintings. Glazing is such a quick process and it enables us to produce colours that cannot be produced in any other way (I can’t anyway, somebody else might be able to😁). I have a time lapse of a similar but much smaller painting on the channel. I learn something new with every painting that I do and sometimes I would do a small study that is similar to one of my bigger ones to specifically try techniques and use it as a learning experience👍🏻

I use glazing plenty... it separates other oil paintings in its depth...7 to 9 layers of glaze for shadows with alternating layers of ultramarine and alizarin red. your lion is simply off the charts what is the size??

Thank you very much. The painting is 76x137cm. Interesting combination that you are using for your glazing, I sometimes use alizarin crimson too but ultramarine not so frequently for glazing - I do use it a lot for other things especially mixed with burnt umber for creating blacks😁
