I have experience working with a brand new kiln at a job, and am getting this exact kiln for my own personal use. I know nothing about manual kilns, and honestly I just blindly followed what I was told to press on the display of the new kiln… Your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful with teaching me the basics! Thank you so much!!

Dude. You are awesome. I've been doing pottery (as a hobby) for a few years now, but have never owned a kiln or had an opportunity to fire my own stuff. There is SO much content out there on kiln troubleshooting, or rewiring, or other way more complicated stuff. This is all the information everyone assumes I already know, but I don't. Yet. Well, I do now. Thanks to you. You're awesome! Next stop, your Patreon.

Very helpful! I teach elementary art and a community member donated a Skutt 181 to my school this summer. A ceramic artist friend told me it looks pristine, but I have never done my own firing (I drive 400+ clay pieces to the high school to have fired in the automatic kiln). Having this and the bisque video as a reference is much easier to understand than the manual, and more entertaining!

Hi Dante, friendly recommendation, coating your kiln shelves with kiln wash (number of different recipes most of which are all easy and cheap) will help protect them in the event of glaze experimentation gone wrong or a firing gone wrong. Much easier to chip of glaze drips without damaging the shelves. Good chance you know this, just didn't look like the shelves had any in the video.

You are not suppose to fire only at high if you have a Skutt as per a Skutt Technician . you go from low, mid & high. leave top open using the wed that came with the kiln plug bottom hole and middle hole, oh high you plug all holes but the top hole and close the lid. He is so wrong!

Hi, your video's are so helpful. I am a hobby potter just starting with he kiln and I purchased a second hand Skutt 181 exactly the same as yours. I am just concerned over the location of the kiln. I have it in my garage and worried about fumes getting into the house. Should I just be making sure the garage and the back door to the garage are open for venting? I read that you should put venting kits on your kilns but I don't think this is an option on this old kiln. Thanks for you help!

Well well. I have been firing my manual kiln wrong then, i didnt know i could turn it straight to high right off. I always thought i had to bump up the heat gradually Low , med, high. Thanks for the tutorial. Now I need to go watch the bisque video you did
@Pyrichia
@Pyrichia 6 жыл бұрын
He can do that because this is glaze firing, and the pottery has already been fired to the glaze temperature or higher. In bisque firing, you need to add heat slowly so the clay can go through changes at different temperatures without getting damaged. But once the clay has become a fired piece and you have glaze on it, you can go to glaze temp directly and quickly.

No you not. I fire the same way and I checked with the Skutt Technician and you and every one else that does the low, med, high is the right way to do it. This guy is not firing right according to the Technician & apparently he never read the book or checked the right way! where he learned to fire or he just decided to fire any way he wanted. looking at the condition of his kiln i wouldn't trust any thing he says about firing.

I am very surprises you can get ro Cone 5, with that blank ring installed. Skutt themselves says, that with the ring in, you should only be able to reach Cone 1. Also, the "stilts" are also called "Posts". I believe that is so they aren't confused with the stilts, which are the pointed holders, that are put under wares to keep them raised, in case there are glaze drips.

If it's glaze work you can just turn it on high after loading and closing the kiln. You really only have to candle buisque work.

Hello! Thank you for this video. I have a similar kiln. It's a sitter kiln model LT-3K. Since this kiln has 3 knobs instead of two, do I use the same process for glaze firing? (Put in 06 cone, Turn all knobs to high, leave overnight.)
@benpatterson4452
@benpatterson4452 5 жыл бұрын
For bisque, or a low fire glaze? Generally you should go low, medium and then high, for a few hours each. It is not advisable, to leave a kiln unattendes overnight, when firing. If it cooling, that is fine, but when on, it should be supervised. Cone sitters can get stuck, timers can fail, and even computer controlled can have errors (A relay that gets stuck on). You don't want to come in and find a kiln that overfired...

Yay! demo with a manual kiln! I notice you kept all the peepholes closed and there's no vent in the kiln lid--how are all the gases able to escape during the glaze firing? I have an old Duncan kiln, and just replaced the elements, and am currently (as I type this) attempting my first glaze firing EVER. It is now at 8 hours and has only reached about 1800 degrees, and the temperature climb is slowing down. Wondering if I should have closed the top peephole...

@@scottgallop768 Yeah, me too. Update: kiln totally misfired. I had to shut it down after 18 hours--never got past 1800. Just put in new elements, but they were not Duncan elements, but fabricated by a pottery shop. My repair guy thinks they are the problem, but I am wondering about my lid, which is made of fiber rather than brick, and has a crack that is flaking material all over my work. All in all not a good day.

Do you routinely get this Kiln up to ^6? I'm considering purchasing a used 181 Model that is local to me and when I called Skutt Costomer Service about it they said this model is not designed to go up to that temperature on a routine basis.

@EarthNationCeramics

I have a hunch you are looking online for "skutt 181 shelves" but because the inside of a skutt 181 ( and subsequently a skirt 818) is 17.5" wide. Try buying or asking for 16" shelves instead. That should fit ( as you never want the shelf to fit the kiln exactly, how will you place them of they did🙂)

You really ought to add a ventilation system to your kiln. I have mine venting out of a small window in my attached garage. This doesn't completely eliminate the odor, but it's a huge improvement and definitely feels safer!
