Owner Operator How to go from no CDL to owner operator in 1 year or less. (Step By Step) 1. Find a CDL school to obtain my CDL license. 2. Get experience from a mega carrier. Prime?Swift? Stevens? Schneider? 3. Get experience from a reliable and credible smaller carrier. (25 or less trucks) 4. Figure out what are the requirements to lease under said carrier if I got my own truck? What is the cost to lease under their company if I got my own truck? What is the percentage? Do not accept anything over 20%. What comes with the percentage I’m paying? Factoring? Dispatching? Insurance? 5. Start saving up money for equipment. Truck. Trailer. Insurance. 6. Form an LLC. Get business credit. Business bank account, small credit cards, net30 accounts, and business address. 7. Start reaching out to truck dealership and figure out what their requirements are. Find companies that meets your needs and standards. 8. Set a goal for how much money you need to obtain truck. 9. Figure out what type of trailer you want to haul and truck you want to drive. 10. Start doing extensive research and building connections within the industry. 11. Once truck money goals are met, reacquire about requirements needed to lease under carrier and purchase truck. 12. How to lease under a company? Simply register your truck under their company. Plates, IRP, IFTA stickers, decals, etc. Cost - $1800-$2200 13. Once truck is registered and work has begun. Start searching for an escape route. File authority whilst working for company.

Shareef, Thanks for hooking up the outline of the video. Whoever is trying to start their own trucking business should copy that and save it and look at it everyday. I'm having difficulty finding a dealer that is more relaxed with their requirements. Alot want 2 to 3 years experience and 10 to 15k down to lease one of their trucks. Ken V or anyone in the comments have any insight?

FedEx was gonna hire me as a regular class c driver with my points on license for at fault accidents that are both two years old, one drops in august for this year, I changed my mind and withdrew the hire date. Pursing getting my cdl, passed my knowledge test 2/17/22 going for my combinations and air brakes tomorrow hopefully 2/18/22 if I pass them both I’m already enrolled in a school out in commerce, ca. I already paid up front which was 2200… so once I get my permit I’m gonna start training behind the wheel and they are approved TRP/FMCSA ELDT training… I plan on doing hazmat training as well since it’s required now, also have double and triples test to do, I’m going to add tankers before I doing skills test: I’m glad to ready fed ex hire new cdl holders, I was aiming for them for experience.

At 50 years old I've decided to change careers and get into trucking. I've done a ton of research and have more to do, but after my research I put together a game plan for this transition. My confidence is bolstered after watching this video because my plan is exactly as you've layed it out here, so I feel like my research and strategy is on point. The thing most drivers miss or ignore imo is the building of their business, and personal credit. Since I am an expert at both, that is where I'm going to add value to the community. Thanks Ken. I'm learning a lot from your videos young man and congrats on your continuing success.

Ken, and everybody in the comment section, ima be real honest cause I need to get this off my chest. I'm really trying to become a trucker by any means neccesary. I realized after a decent driving career with Amazon, and Ashley's home furniture that I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to... Problem is I live in a very bad area where insurance rates are sky high, and I have 3 minor moving traffic violations that are technically full violations through the zip code I'm under, making it hard for a jobs insurance company to hire me. This shit inspires me bro. I don't even care if you don't know me or care to know, grt your money dude, and just keep working on being successful. I never been the one to imitate the success point, I like the imitate the process. I want to be strong, more then just successful and wealthy. I'm looking for happiness within solidarity and not wealth. I feel like trucking will make up for lost time, and I can finally get out of this toxic community and think clearly. Fr, thank you Ken. Please never give up. Cause you'll be giving up on me and anyone who's like me. This isn't pressure because win, or lose, who you are and what you've done can NEVER be taken away... My dad always used to tell me how black people were pushed away from CDL driving back then, and now seeing that Opprotunity is everywhere. I'm at UPS part-time, being a loader. Not my desired place to be, but I need to be uncomfortable if I want to grow. UPS makes me suffer, but I know that the suffering makes me more confident in myself. Everyday I look for more motivation.

Keep pushing bro, take care of all issues that you have with your drivers licence. Im going thru something similar with violations (4 speeding tickets) but im currently still driving for Fedex. A couple of carriers that hire newer drivers and pay decently are your delivery carriers like PFG, or Budweiser, Sysco ect where you touch freight. If you’re in good physical shape and dont mind the work they offer decent pay and decent sign on bonuses plus you’re home everyday.
@MondoChow777
@MondoChow777 2 жыл бұрын
That's not necessarily true. We already know that OTR companies that require endorsements like hazmat, tanker, doubles and triples are the highest paying companies and the ones that require or recommend you get all of them are even the highest paying among them. Dedicated or regional divisions in these companies can get you home every weekend paying up to 86 cents per mile, most of them pay for your CDL. Starting as a local driver is the worst thing anyone going into this industry can do because as soon as you want to make more money your experience doesn't count towards higher starting pay beside having to train with a company driver sharing a truck.

I started out as a local driver and am at all the same distribution centers that alot if OTR carries had their drivers out. I hope to have enough money soon to get my own truck but also I'm in Houston where there is crazy amount of freight to move.

i would say false information my guy. first of all if you dont wanna pay up the ass in insurance, you need to have 2 years exp driving. You can get a truck really easy, but if 80% of small carriers that take o/o request 2 years exp driving what the point of getting a truck before that. now in the rare occasion you find a small carrier that takes in driver with less than a year( which its seldom) they will charge a a hefty premium everyweek or montly. So my question is why rush????? iam not hating your grind, just setting facts straight, because you out here sugar coating it for other people, making seems its easy, then people go and do all this you tell them to do, they get a truck and fail, go bankrupt, then they just a number. you can tell me all you want that you dont need to put a lot of years to get your own truck, but you know its a lie. Putting in more years under your belt, willl save you the trouble of finding yourself F up once you get your own truck and times get hard.
