It is called a land plane, land leveler, road grader, and many other things, but one things for sure, it's the best tool for resurfacing a driveway! Our gravel isn't quite all delivered, but it's getting close! So far we've been using the Skidsteer and the bucket to spread out the gravel and try to get everything level. Today we pull out the big boy: our 84" Dirt Dog leveler. See how it handles the task of creating a crown on our driveway by watching the video.

Do you remove the front bucket for VISIBILITY or is there a let's say you want LESS Wt. on front of the tractor for when using a Land plan. I like how you explain the idea behind it to leave a crown in the center of the driveway. If I'm correct in saying that.

Also can a LAND Plan be run backwards. Backing up with a tractor, like the box spreader, or is it not designed for backup work.??????? Just asking I'm trying to learn so much about these wonderful attachments for a homeowner doing his own work.

So I bought a couple chunks of the Outback Wrap and used the code GWT to save a couple of bucks. Order on a Saturday and received them the following Saturday! What an awesome, Made in USA product that is high quality and reasonably priced! Shipping costs were extremely competitive...they didn't rake me over the coals like most places do these days. Additionally, I bought a bunch of stuff from Summit Hydraulics for a project I'm working on to make my back blade angle hydraulically. Once again, great company to work with, high quality merch and fast, free shipping for orders over $100. Thanks for vetting these awesome vendors for us Courtney!!!

Something you "may" want to consider is after you have your construction completed, your fabric laid and your 21A all dressed and pretty. Let that all settle in for a couple of years, then recover with recycled asphalt or asphalt "millings". It lays like gravel, compact it while watering, then it is like asphalt. It will absorb water through it, like a sponge and wear like asphalt. It isn't cheap, but it will last you. I put mine in almost 12 years ago. Still looks like I had it paved. Best wishes on your future plans!

Check and see if your asphalt in your area is recycled, because a lot of states are making asphalts plants recycle the millings, and using way more sand, you don’t want those millings

I love my landplane with a 900’ driveway. I have a box blade as well as a rear blade but the landplane is the most useful for spreading and leveling gravel. My next upgrade for my 2038R is top and tilt which is expensive but worth it. I’m glad you got big Johnny back. It was looking like you were going ‘orange’ on us for while.

9/23/21; congrats on getting yur JD 4720 returned from t'shop. So tell us what happened to it?...thought it was a new unit when you were showing us yur land. Wow! Land plane works great! Also your Droan pilot did a great job showing the usage/results of that attachment. I saw many other implements, storage tanks, mini excavator etc. as yur pilot was flying around. Wonderful to see how big your property is while listening to that 'smoothe country' instrumental music in t'background. All works very well to see & hear your videos! So, give your pilot a nice Cajun Keto meal, fish, shrimp, lettice, HB eggs topped with sliced almonds. Yumm! Let's keep him/her around for a while! Enjoy your Droan footage of yur land & info on those tractor impliments/accessories. Very nice!🙂👍👍👍

Great job on the driveway. I have a 1,000' gravel driveway. I got my JD 1025R and I had to get a box blade. This was before I saw KZfaq videos of people using a land plane. I should have gotten a land plane cause I was terrible at using a box blade. A box blade is not an easy attachment to master. At least not for me. After about 20 years I asphalted the driveway and got rid of the box blade. The grandkids love it. I see with your land plane you have hydraulic tip and tilt. That is great. So much better to dial it in from the seat. Thanks for sharing.

The Landplane is way better at leveling than a box blade for people that are not good at boxblade use. I also got a BB with my 1025r and soon realized i caused more problems than I corrected with it. I bought the ABI TR3-E Property Edition and haven't looked back, although I admit I wouldn't mind having a landplane. Another thing i would say is to get a Hydraulic Top-Link, it makes box blade use a lot better if you want to stick with it. I use my Hyd Top-Link Constantly to adjust fore and aft. Not sure how i lasted this long without a Hyd Top-Link!

I’ve never seen anyone put fabric down after 21a. The textile is meant to permeate water but keep the base from mixing with the native ground. I just redid my driveway to pave last summer before I deployed and I had to cut out a clay vein. The existing driveway was built over sand and silt. I used the fabric over where I dug out the clay to keep materiel from mixing in the wet season. Help it drain as well as keep it from splaying put into the subsoil. Least in heavy water areas I would have done that, but if you dig deep enough maybe after compaction it will keep the water out. Cheers! Looks like a project I’d love to work on

Good to see the 4720 back in action, what did they find wrong with it? Driveway is looking good the landplane is doing an awesome job much quicker than using a skid steer on that long of a run. Not sure about laying geofabric down on top of the first base course the resident civil engineers at work would freaking out at that. Definitely compact it can't stress that enough. But well done man you are doing a great job. 👍✌️

I have used Flex Base, recycled concrete, 6 inches, wet, use a 35 ton vibration roller, after construction, follow up with 6 inches of recycled asphalt and roll again. At 12 years old, it could use 4 inches of recycled asphalt and roll it again. With all of the fines in Flex Base, once watered and rolled, it sets up like concrete and works great during the construction period.

I am interested in purchasing a land plane but am having trouble deciding on a size. I have a Kubota M5660 and the outside of my rear tires are at about 74.5". Generally I try to get implements wider than my tires or offset so I would go with a 84"+ implement. In this case however, my driveway is only 10' wide and I want a slight crown so I was thinking 60" or 72" so the blades don't cut over to the other side of the drive. Any thoughts or suggestions?

@rmcdaniel423
@rmcdaniel423 2 жыл бұрын
Depends how much dirt you need to move around. Bigger lumps, deeper dips, more uneven, is where the box blade shines. Fairly well established, minor leveling, smoothing to a more finished surface, is where the land plane shines. It's sorta like choosing sandpaper. Does your project need 60 grit or 120 grit? When you ask an open ended question like what tool to "grade a new drive", that's like asking what sandpaper to "do woodworking". It all depends on the project you are faced with.

Noticed that you had the land plane tiled a bit downward (the tail was 1" to 2" higher). Was that intentional? What happens if you change the front to back tilt? Also can you just let the land plane float using the skids to set the depth to work at and using the tilt cylinder to set the crown grade? And one more request, please show us the culvert. Thanks for the videos. Cheers!

I had it in several angles, also was hard to see sometimes. I thought it was completely flat while my bro said it was pitched. Scraped more material when both edges where on the ground. Yes, the plane has slots on both sides so you can also adjust the edges up and down in those slots to adjust the crown. Thanks!

You actually need to tilt it to the rear just a hair, or the material will pull the front down and wear out the front edge of your skids!

I find it interesting that the contractor recommended putting geotextile fabric between layers of gravel. I used to work for a Geotechnical engineering firm and now I work for an environmental engineering firm. Typically, woven geotextile fabric is used to prevent localized shear forces in weak soils, i.e. if the ground is soft put down fabric to prevent settlement. Your subsoil looked really good actually in the videos you showed digging it out. It was nice and dry. I know construction practices vary throughout the country but I doubt you really need the fabric, especially between layers of gravel. Just curious what his thought process is.

If I had to guess it would be somewhat for erosion, but most likely to keep grass from coming up through the gravel for aesthetics

Would using a loaded lawn roller help pack it down?
@rmcdaniel423
@rmcdaniel423 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Packing it down would help pack it down. But based on the bit by bit way he is doing this massive project, he's probably not ready for that step. And if he did decide to roll it once the rest of the gravel is in place and leveled, he would probably bring in something bigger and heavier than a simple lawn roller. Just guessing.

you can see the tractor power hopping. it cannot pull that full of gravel. Should it not flow over the two blades more easily? I would guess it would perform better on a firm road. I am building a road with an 18 000 lb wheel loader. just back blading. new cutting edge and the front wheels off the road to pack it down. I think it may be better to hire a grader to do the finishing touches once the A base is laid down.

You don’t have to have a crown for a driveway to shed water. My opinion is a crown can be very problematic for snow removal. When plowing snow you tend to also move a lot of gravel off the crown to places you don’t want it in addition to the snow, even if you have a rubber or non cutting edge on the snowplow. Instead… you can make a “flat” (if you will) surface (no crown) but have the flat surface pitched slightly to one side or the other… in the direction you’d like the water to run. In my experience, this makes a much better surface to plow snow off of… while still shedding water off the lane/driveway. Once the “flat” surface is created a drainage swale next to the driveway is a better option than a true “ditch” if the topography allows for it. If you can create a swale that is wide and shallow while still giving enough pitch in the swale for water to run where you would like it after it has shed off the driveway… you can mow it in dry weather… rather than need to run a weed eater or other difficult maintenance needed to keep a deeper ditch looking neat. You may also put a swale on the high side of the driveway to prevent some water from coming on to the drive way surface and then at some point route the swale away. Again this would depend on a driveways exact location. A box blade is a great tool for creating the flat but slightly pitched driveway surface and for creating a wide shallow swale(s) next to the driveway… With smart tilt set up for the pitch of the driveway surface. I would skip fabric all together and use a stone crushed with lots of dust in it that will pack in well on the top. Leaving the fabric out of the driveway construction will allow the use of a boxblade’s shanks in future years if you need to regrade the driveway. Depending on your topography these thoughts may not be options for you. But it is just my $0.02 and could be helpful to you or someone else.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 2 жыл бұрын
I think a pitched flat surface would have it's own challenges, but it probably depends on the surface. I'll tell ya that you are in the minority on not using fabric. Good to have different perspectives. Gives me something to think about. Thanks for taking the time to share!

@@GoodWorksTractors I’ve got a road grading business and I have box blades running all day. I agree the fabric is a pita with the teeth. You would need a good 6” of gravel on top of the fabric in order to not dig it up (8-10” is even better). IMO it should’ve been laid below the base gravel, but to each their own.
@ErieRadio
@ErieRadio 2 жыл бұрын
@@GoodWorksTractors you don’t need much pitch on the “flat” surface to get a lane to shed water. 1/4” per foot or so. If your lane was 12 feet wide a 1/4” would make the high side 3” higher than the low side. 3 to 5” difference would shed water without a crown to make snow removal difficult. Re: fabric if you had clay soils or something in the base that would suck up your gravel… I would have put fabric down first and got about 8 inches or so of total material on top of it. Fabric so high up in the lane’s construction I think will cause you some unwanted problems later. Just some thoughts… worth what you are paying for them. LOL Fun channel to watch. 👍
