Actually an Oyster does Not secrete Mother of Pearl. Mother of Pearl is what lines the shell. What an Oyster does secrete to create a pearl is nacre, that forms layer by layer to make a pearl.

I have pearls that are very old"80yrs". They are off white and have a luster of different colors that are layered. There is one large that is round flat. Plus 2 smaller flats, the rest are round. They were given to my mom on her honeymoon. U said nothing of round flat. I think they were bought at Niagara falls. Do u think the flats are that way because of their age, when they were in the shell or cultured when they did that way back when? They are so lusterous.
